Abstract

An assist handle for installation in the passenger compartment of motor vehicles comprises a cylindrical widener pin (18) from which cylindrical segment portions are removed to form pairs of flat parallel opposing faces inscribed within the quadrangular profile of the opening of a respective handle base insert (12), the pin cylindrical portions lying between the opposing faces being threaded and effective to cut a corresponding thread in the walls of the insert (12) cavity when the handle has to be removed by screwing off the pin (18). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Assist handle for installation in the passenger compartment of motor vehicles, especially motor cars This invention relates to an assist handle for installation in the passenger compartment of motor vehicles, especially motor cars, of the type comprising a central body and two bases each containing an insert of plastics material constituting the element for connecting the relative base to the vehicle body, and in which said insert includes a quadrangular aperture bounded by pairs of opposing lugs, each with an end tooth arranged to engage under the edge of an aperture in the vehicle body when a widener member, also of plastics material, is inserted and forced between said lugs devised by the Applicant.
The object of the present invention is to improve handles of the aforesaid type in order to make their assembly easier, and in particular to enable them to be removed simply, rapidly and without the use of special tools.
This and further objects which will be apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter are attained by an assist handle for installation in the passenger compartment of motor vehicles, especially motor cars, of the type comprising a central body and two bases each containing an insert of plastics material constituting the element for connecting the relative base to the vehicle body, and in which said insert includes a quadrangular aperture bounded by pairs of opposing lugs, each with an end tooth which engages under an aperture in the vehicle body when a widener member is forced between the lugs, characterized in that the widener member is constituted by a cylindrical pin from which cylindrical segment portions are removed to form pairs of flat parallel opposing faces inscribed within the quadrangular profile of the aperture in the insert, and in that the cylindrical portions lying between said faces are threaded, the pin comprising a hexagonal seat for the insertion of a pin extraction key for removing the handle.
The invention will be more apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa detailed section showing one of the bases of the handle already mounted, the handle being symmetrical about the sectioning axis shown in the Figure; Figure 2 is a section similar to the preceding but in exploded view; Figures 3 and 4 are also sections similar to the preceding, showing in detail the manner in which the widener member is inserted, and the manner in which it is removed and withdrawn; Figure 5 is a perspective view of the widener member; and Figure 6 is an enlarged section on the line VI-VI of Figure 1.
On the drawings, the reference numeral 10 indicates the central body of the handle, or gripping body" 1 5,. - so the bases of said body, and 12 the hollow insert formed by pairs of opposing lugs 13 and 14, each provided with an end tooth 15 arranged to engage under the edge of a quadrangualar aperture provided in the sheet metal 16 of the vehicle body.
As clearly shown in the figure, the insert 12 is housed in a cavity in the base 11 closed by a cover 17 which can be snap-inserted as explained hereinafter.
After the end of the insert has been inserted into the corresponding aperture in the vehicle body, a widener member 18 is forced into the quadrangular cavity in the insert in order to keep the hooks 15 engaged with the edge of said aperture by preventing the lugs 13, 14 from moving inwards.
As it is clearly shown, the widener member 18 is constituted by a cylindrical pin with a collar head 18a and pairs of parallel opposing flat faces 19, inscribed within the quadrangular profile PQ (Figure 6) defined bythelugsl3,l4oftheinsertl2.Thefacesl9are parallel in pairs to the corresponding pairs of lugs.
The cylindrical portions 20 of the pin which lie between the faces 19 carry corresponding portions of a continuous thread interrupted by said faces.
A prismatic cavity 21 with a hexagonal profile is provided in the pin head 18a for the insertion of an Allan key.
The pin 18 is advantageously moulded in one piece with the insert 12, to which it is joined in an extracted position by a thin film of weld. After inserting the insert by guiding it into its seat in the relative handle base until the teeth 15 are in such a position as to engage with the edge of the sheet metal 16, the pin 18 is struck by a percussion tool P, which causes the film of weld to break and the pin to become inserted into the seat in the insert (Figure 3).
To remove the handle, the pin can be easily extracted by turning a key K in the unscrewing direction (Figure 4). In this manner, the threaded portions 20 of the pin are brought into contact with the inner surfaces ofthe lugs 13,14 (which mate with the faces 19 of the pin when the pin is inserted).
These portions cut a conjugate thread into the material of the lugs to enable the pin to be unscrewed.
It is advantageous for the thread 20 of the cylindrical portions to be connected by a slight bevel to the adjacent faces 19. Two diametrically opposite seats 22 are also provided in the hexagonal cavity 21 of the pin 18 for the snap-engagement of a cover stem 23 provided with end hooking teeth.
