Abstract

A terminal protection cover (30), connected with a connector (10), includes a projecting portion (33) shaped to be inserted into a hollow portion (32) of the male connector. The projecting portion (33) has terminal receiving holes (34) that receive male terminals (21). The terminal receiving holes (34) correspond to the regular positions of male terminals (21) and are formed as large as a predetermined allowable bending tolerance range for the contacts. When some of the male terminals (21) are deformed when the projecting portion (12) is inserted into the hollow portion (32), the deformed terminals abut a wall around the terminal receiving holes (34), and the terminals fail to be inserted in the receiving holes until they are returned to their regular position. <IMAGE>

Description

TERMINAL PROTECTION COVER The present invention relates to a terminal protection cover, and, in particular, to the terminal protection cover for covering an opening of a male connector to protect terminals thereof.
The conventional terminal protection cover is known as shown in Fig. 5. A male connector 1 has a cylindrical portion 2 opened toward an insertion direction, in which male terminals 3 are arranged in the insertion direction. The terminal protection cover 4 is detachably attached to an opening of the cylindrical portion 2 so as to cover the opening.
While a harness having the male connector is transported, if foreign matter is plunged into the opening of the cylindrical portion 2, the male terminals may be bent as shown in Fig. 5 by broken line. In such a case, the male connector 1 cannot be connected with a female connector (not shown) because the male terminals 3 can not be inserted into the female terminals (not shown). In order to prevent the above-mentioned problem, the terminal protection cover is attached to cover the opening of the cylindrical portion during transportation.
The conventional terminal protection cover described above prevents foreign matter from plunging into the male terminals, so that deformation of the male terminals can be avoided.
However, in the case that the male terminals have been already deformed before the terminal protection cover is attached, a defective portion is found at the time of connecting the male connector with a female connector. Accordingly, it is inevitably difficulty for a worker because of the reason described above.
In view of the above-mentioned problem, it is an object of the present invention to provide a terminal protection cover in order to prevent deformation of male terminals during transportation, to detect deformation of the male terminals before connecting with a female connector and to improve worker efficiency.
In order to achieve above-mentioned object, the present invention provides a terminal protection cover for covering an opening of a male connector, which has a projecting portion to be inserted inside of the opening and has terminal receiving holes, the holes being located to correspond to regular positions of the terminals in the male connector.
According to the present invention described above, when the terminal protection cover covers the opening of the male connector, the projecting portion is inserted inside of said opening. In such case, if all terminals remain in their regular positions, the terminals are inserted into terminal receiving holes. Therefore the terminal protection cover covers the opening completely. However, when some terminals are in irregular positions because of deforming, the terminals at irregular position are abutted against a wall around the holes for detecting the terminals. Accordingly, the terminal protection cover fails to be inserted into the opening of the male connector until being returned to the regular position in which the terminal protection cover is attached to the male connector.
As described above, according to the present invention, the terminal protection cover can detect deformation of the male terminals at the time of covering the opening. Accordingly, the terminal protection cover of the present invention eliminates the difficulty of deformation of the terminals at the time of working to connect after transportation, and improves worker efficiency.
Fig. 1 is the perspective view of the terminal protection cover according to the invention.
Fig. 2 -is the perspective view in the direction of the connected side of the terminal protection cover.
Fig. 3 is the cross-sectional view of the normally state which the terminal protection cover is attached.
Fig. 4 is the cross-sectional view of the abnormally state which the terminal protection cover is attached.
Fig. 5 is the cross-sectional view of the state which the conventional terminal protection cover is attached.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a connected state in which a terminal protection cover of an embodiment of the present invention is attached to a male terminal connector.
In Fig. 1, a male connector 10 integrally molded by hard resin comprises a base portion 11 for holding a plurality of male terminals having a band-plate shape at a predetermined position arranged in a predetermined direction, and a cylindrical portion 12 being made as a rectangular parallelepiped so as to surround the plurality of male terminals 21.
A terminal protection cover 30 is made from soft resin and has a knob 31 for detaching on one side of the terminal protection cover. The terminal protection cover 30 has an annular groove 32 into which a wall portion of an opening of the cylindrical porion 12 is inserted to fit therewith on a surface to be connected with the male connector 10 (in Fig. 1, a face in direction of arrow A). A projecting portion 33, which is an inner part of the annular groove 32, has a substantially similar shape as an inside of the cylindrical portion 12, and the projecting portion 33 has terminal receiving holes 34 into which the male terminals 21 are inserted. The terminal receiving holes 34 are formed parallel to the insertion direction and correspond to regular positions of the male terminals 21, which stand inside of the cylindrical portion 12.Openings of the holes are formed as large as a predetermined allowable bending range of vertical and horizontal width, as shown in Fig. 2. The allowable bending range is determined so as to allow the male terminals 21 to connect with female terminals.
Use of the terminal protection cover described above will now be described.
As the male terminals 21 are assembled in the male connector 10, the opening side of the cylindrical portion 12 is faced with the connection side of the terminal protection cover 30. The projecting portion 33 of the terminal protection cover 30 is inserted into the cylindrical portion 12, while the wall portion of the cylindrical portion 12 is inserted into the groove 32 of the terminal protection cover 30.
When the male terminals 21 are slightly deformed within the allowable bending range as shown in Fig. 3, the male terminals are normally inserted into the terminal receiving holes 34 respectively when the projecting portion 33 is inserted into the cylindrical portion 12. The edge of the wall of the cylindrical portion 12 abuts against the bottom portion of the groove 32, so that the connection is completed.
However, when some of the male terminals 21 are deformed over the allowable bending range as shown in Fig. 4, the terminals that are deformed are abutted against a wall around the opening of the terminal receiving holes 34 when the projecting portion 33 of the terminal protection cover 30 is inserted into the cylindrical portion 12. The male terminals 21 are not able to be inserted into the terminal receiving holes 34, so that the projecting portion 33 fails to be inserted inside of the cylindrical portion 12 until the terminals are returned to the regular position for attaching with the connector. As a result, an abnormality in the terminal can be easily detected and corrected.
In such a case, the terminal protection cover 30 is detached to adjust the male terminals. Then, the terminal protection cover is attached again. The terminal receiving holes 34 prevent deformation thereafter and enable the male connector 10 to be surely connected with the female connector.
In the above-mentioned embodiment, the cylindrical portion 12 is inserted into the groove 32 so that the terminal protection cover 30 is fit with the male connector 10. However, the groove portion 32 may be omitted, so that the body of the projecting portion 33 is fit with the male connector 10.
