Mounted in the sub-frame (1) is a glazed window frame (3) having a strip of spring steel (4) formed with resilient tabs (5) secured to the sides of frame (3) by self-tapping screws (6). The window frame with tabs is press-fitted into the sub-frame aperture following which the resilient tabs (5) spring outwards to engage a rib on the inner side of the sub-frame (1) to securely hold the window frame (3) in the sub-frame. The sub-frame is mounted in the structure (2) by stainless steel ties which slide in a groove of the extruded sub-frame. The extrusion has an inwardly facing peripheral slot (9) formed with projections. When the sub-frame is secured in the brick structure, a strip is secured in the slot (9) by a spring strip. <IMAGE>

Description

PANEL FRAME ASSEMBLY UNIT This invention relates to a panel frame assembly unit and more particularly to an assembly for a window frame.
Window frame units are already available which are assembled from a sub-frame and a glazed window frame, the sub-frame being built into a wall opening and the glazed window frame is then secured into the sub-frame by screws.
These known units have the disadvantages that the installation of the glazed window frame is time consuming and may leave the assembled unit as a security risk as the glazed window frame may be unscrewed and removed by an unauthorized person.
An aim of the present invention is to overcome the above disadvantages by providing a panel frame assembly which can be readily and permanently assembled without the workman having to spend time screwing in the panel unit.
According to the present invention there is provided a panel frame assembly unit comprising a subframe having means to mount it in an aperture of a building structure, and a panel frame for insertion in the sub-frame, wherein the sub-frame or panel frame has flexible projections extending from at least one side of the sub-frame or panel frame to engage an adjacent wall of the other frame, and securely lock the frames together.
Conveniently, the flexible projections are a plurality of tabs cut from a strip having means to mount the strip to the panel frame.
Preferably, the strip is made of spring steel which is screwed into a recess in the panel frame.
In a preferred construction the sub-frame unit has a peripheral slot extending around othe inner wall for receiving a strip of perforated material to cover a wall cavity. The perforated material may carry a strip of insulating foam to close the wall cavity.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accomapnying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a window frame assembly according to the present invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-section of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a detail of the sub-frame shown in Figure 1 and 2; and Figure 4 is a second fragmentary detail of the sub-frame.
The panel frame assembly unit illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a sub-frame generally indicated at 1 made of extruded aluminium which is built into a window aperture in a brick built building structure 2. Mounted within the rectangular sub-frame 1, is a glazed window frame generally indicated at 3 having a strip of spring steel 4 formed with resilient tabs 5 secured to each side of the window frame 3 by self-tapping screws 6. The window frame with resilient tabs is press-fitted into the sub-frame aperture following which the resilient tabs 5 spring outwards to engage a rib on the inner sides of the sub-frame 1 to securely hold the window frame 3 in the sub-frame.
An enlarged cross-section of the assembled window frame unit is illustrated in Figure 2, where the sub-frame 1 is mounted in the outer brick structure 2 by stainless steel frame ties 7 which slide in a groove 8 of the extruded sub-frame 1. The inwardly facing wall of the extrusion has a peripheral slot 9 extending around the sub-frame, the inner walls of the slot 9 are formed with projections 10, see enlarged detail in Figure 3.
When the sub-frame has been secured to the brick structure a strip of perforated material 11 is secured in the peripheral slot 9 by a spring strip 12.
The perforated material 11 may be a plastics mesh or an expanded metal such as an aluminium alloy.
The perforated material may have secured thereto a rectangular cross-section strip 13 of an insulated foam. By pressing the spring strip 12 in the slot 9 and laying the perforated material 11 across a cavity 14 formed between the outer brick wall 2 and an inner wall 15 the insulated foam strip is pressed into the cavity sealing it ready for plastering.
This simple operation avoids the need for closing the wall cavity with brick or other blocks and thus the vertical damp course is not required.
When the insulated foam strip 13 is in place in the cavity 14, a layer of plaster 16 is applied up to the level of the inner wall 17 of the sub-frame extrusion 1 before the glazed window frame 3 is fitted.
The outer wall 18 of the sub-frame extrusion is formed with a second peripheral groove 19 extending around the flat front face of the sub-frame (see Figure 4) which is used to secure the edges of a temporary cover for the sub-frame until the glazed window frame is installed. The temporary cover may be a plastics sheet 20, which can be secured to the sub-frame by e.g.
pressing a resilient strip or a length of rope 21 to secure the edges of the sheet 20 in the groove 19. The temporary cover 20 would be removed by pulling out the rope 21 when the building was ready to have the glazed window frame installed. This has a number of advantages in that it closes the window aperture against inclement weather and avoids the glazed units from becoming soiled with building materials and may carry a builder's name or the name of the window frame supplier. When the main building structure is complete, the glazed window frames are installed.
Although the panel frame assembly unit has been described with reference to a glazed window frame, it is to be understood that it has other applications, for example, to an opaque facing panel of the type used in multi-story buildings or the walls of temporary building structures.
Once the panel frame assembly is press-fitted in the sub-frame the resilient tabs secure the panel in the frame which cannot be easily removed, for example, to force an unauthorised entry into the building thus providing added security that a conventional door panel or window provide.
The sub-frame and panel frame have been described as being made of extruded aluminium however they can of course be manufactured from extruded rigid plastics material currently used in window frame units.
Indeed the panel frame assembly of the present invention may be sold as a kit of parts including a selection of extruded lengths of frame unit which are cut to the desired length and fabricated into a sub-frame by welding the mitred corners or alternatively securing them by cleats and screws, cleats and crimping or cleats and riveting. The kit would also include a length or lengths of resilient tab strips which may be made of a spring steel or a resilient plastics material.
The strips of tabs may be continuous or separate with a plurality of resilient tabs, an individual tab or a small number of tabs which are secured along the frame. The strip of tabs may be fitted to any available UPVC window systems with or without a Euro-groove.
