A security door assembly has a surround 1 which overlaps a doorway in a wall and clamps securely to an external face of the wall of an enclosure and a door 15 which opens outwardly of the enclosure. Locking means provided on the door comprise a mobile bar (35, 36 Figs 7 and 8) having at least two protrusions for engaging with the door surround at spaced locations. <IMAGE>

Description

security Door Assemblv" This invention relates to a security door assembly.
Security doors are often used to replace existing external doors on buildings which are disused or undergoing renovation and are therefore left unoccupied for long periods of time.
Such doors are generally constructed from steel or from a rigid composite plastics material, and comprise a frame which attaches to the jambs and/or sills of an existing door opening. The frame defines a second door opening in which is disposed a door which is attached to the frame in a lockable manner.
The existing doors have various disadvantages. These include a high cost of manufacture for the technically complex designs and vulnerability to attack and vandalism.
According to the present invention there is provided a security door assembly for occluding an aperture in a wall of an enclosure, the assembly comprising a door surround structure which, in use, extends beyond the aperture to abut the wall on the outside#of the enclosure, clamping means to secure the door surround structure to the wall, a door of a size to occlude an opening in the door surround structure and to open outwardly of the enclosure and locking means to lock the door to the door surround structure against opening of the door.
Preferably, the clamping means comprises horizontal and vertical bars which inter-engage on respective sides of the wall.
Preferably, the locking means is shielded from at least the outside of the enclosure, for example by a flat plate which prevents access to the locking means by protrusion of implements between the door and the door surround structure.
Preferably, the flat plate is welded onto the door, most preferably on an external face of the door.
Preferably, the locking means is mounted on-the door and may comprise a movable bar having at least two protrusions which selectively engage the door surround to restrict movement of the door relative to the door surround in at least one direction.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a lock for use in a door, the lock comprising a bar having at least two protrusions thereon which are engagable with a stationary member adjacent to the door to restrict movement of the door relative to the stationary member, and means to move the protrusions into and out of engagement with the stationary member.
Preferably, there are three protrusions on the bar.
Preferably, the stationary member is a door frame and may have holes to receive the protrusions therein or may provide a face against which the protrusions may abut.
The means to move the protrusions into engagement with the stationary member preferably comprises a conventional lock which may move the whole bar to engage the protrusions with the stationary member. The bar may be spring loaded to move the protrusions out of engagement with the stationary member in the absence of any other force.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a perspective view of a door surround structure; Fig 2 is a perspective view of a door; Fig 3 is a section through a first embodiment of a' lock and locking bar of the door shown in Fig 2 in an unlocked position; Fig 4 is a section through the lock and locking bar shown in Fig 3 in a locked position; Fig 5 is a perspective view of a locking plate of the door shown in Fig 2; Fig 6 is a perspective view of a locking bar of the door shown in Fig 2; Fig 7 is a perspective view of one of a first pair of bars; Fig 8 is a plan view of a security door assembly of the invention; Fig 9 is section through a second embodiment of the lock and locking bar of the door shown in Fig 2 in an unlocked position;; Fig 10 is a cross-section of the lock and locking bar shown in Fig 8 in a locked position; and Fig 11 is a view of the outer-face of a security door assembly of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, a security door assembly has a door surround 1 having side members 7 and 8 and top and bottom members 5 and 6 respectively. The side 7, 8 top 5 and bottom 6 members each have a crosssection of a general C-shape and thereby provide a pair of shoulders 5a, 6a, 7a and 8a for each of the side 7, 8 top 5 and bottom 6 members. The door surround 1 has an inner-face 2 and an outer-face 3.
Strengthening plates 4 are welded to the side 7, 8 top 5 and bottom 6 members such that they are attached to the inner-faces of the shoulders 5a, 6a, 7a and 8a and span between the two shoulders of each member.
The side 7, 8 top 5 and bottom 6 members together define a door opening 9 into which extends a stud 10 from each of the top 5 and bottom 6 members. A retaining plate 11 also extends into the door opening 9 from the inner edges of top, bottom and side members 5, 6 and 8 respectively at the inner-face 2 of the door surround 1.
A door 15 is provided to close the door opening 9, the door 15 having two side members 16 and 17, top and bottom members 18 and 19 respectively, two strengthening bars 20 and a panel 21. The door has an inner-face 24 and an outer-face 25.
The bottom 19 and top 18 members each have a hole 26 to accept the respective studs 10 of the door surround 1 and a pivot is thereby provided at 26 around which the door 15 can rotate.
The door 15 is provided with a lock 28 of conventional design which when operated urges a spring loaded locking bar 30 to move against the force of springs 40 along a path defined by guide pins 29. The locking bar 30 moves in a direction shown by the arrow 31 into a locked position (not shown). The locking bar 30 has three locking plates 32 attached thereto. When the door is disposed in the door surround 1 in a closed position and the locking bar 30 is in the locked position, the locking plates 32 are engaged against the inner-face of the retaining strip 11 on the door surround 1 thereby preventing the door 15 from being opened. The top 18, bottom 19 and side 16 members abut the outer-face of the retaining strip 11 and prevent further inward movement of the door 15.
The door assembly is held in position in a doorway (not shown) by clamping means comprising a first pair of bars 35 which extend parallel to the side members 7 and 8, and are welded thereto, a second pair of bars 36 which are separate, expandable and extend parallel to the top 5 and bottom 6 members, and connector rods (not shown) which join the two pairs of bars together.
The first pair of bars 35, of which only one is shown, the other being a mirror image of that shown, have a cross-section of a general Z-shape and incorporate cutout sections 37 and holes 38 and 43. Each bar 35 is welded at 35a to the inner-face 2 of a side member 7 or 8 such that the cutout sections 37 fit over the strengthening plates 4.
The second pair of bars 36 each consist of two sections 36a, 36b of differing diameters, section 36b being hollow and adapted to receive section 36a within it along its axis thereby making each bar 36 axially expandable as shown by arrows 37.
Connector rods (not shown) extend between the bars 35 and 36, are fixed to the bars 35, 36 through holes at positions 38 and are adjustable to allow the distance between the bars 35 and 36 to be selected and fixed.
In use, the door surround 1 is disposed on the exterior face of a wall of a building or room overlapping a doorway or other entrance to the building or room (not shown) such that the first pair of bars 35 extend into the doorway. The second pair of bars 36 are adjusted to have a length greater than the width of the doorway and each of the second pair of bars 36 are located in a horizontal configuration at the internal face of the wall so as to be level with holes 38 at the top and bottom of the first pair of bars 35. The arrangement is such that the jambs of the doorway or other entrance are disposed between the door surround 1 and the second pair of bars 36.An end of a connector rod is then located in the hole 38 in the bars 35 and held there by a T-headed bolt or any other suitable means, and the other end of the connector rod which has a screw thread, is located in the hole 38 in the bar 36. A conventional nut is offered to the screw threaded end of the connector and is tightened, thereby clamping the jambs of the doorway between the bars 35 and 36.
The door 15 is then located on the studs 10 and when locked is secured by the locking bar 30 and locking plates 32 against any opening movement, and against any further inward movement by the retaining strip 11. The locking plates 32 are protected from attack from the outer face 3 of the door assembly by the retaining strip 11.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has the following dimensions (in mm) of door surround structure in order to be adapted to fit a number of doorway sizes: 1060 X 2285 900 X 2000 900 X 2200 800 X 2000 The preferred material of the assembly is 14G or 16G galvanised steel plate (gal BS 2898) or zintec (zinc coated steel ready for paint finish BS lea49) with 2mm thick cover plates at the lock to prevent insertion of levers. All other component parts are manufactured from carbon steel to BS 970 EN3A. Similarly, the size of door is preferably 650 x 1200 (mm) but may be varied if required.
Doors are preferably provided with two mortise deadlocks especially adapted for use on the security door assemblies with cover plates and protection plates.
The hinges are preferably manufactured from stainless steel BS 970 EN5 8B and all welds and mild steel plates are painted with cold galvanising primer or fully painted with a stove-enamelled power coat. The hinges may also be protected by a generally "C shaped" element surrounding the hinge on 3 sides.
The adjustable locking bar preferably comprises a zinc plated box section with galvanised flanges.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, as shown in Figs 9 and 10, the locking bar 30 may, instead of locking plates 32, have bolts 39 which extend through holes 41 in adjacent faces of the respective side members of the door and door surround 16 and 8 thereby preventing any rotational movement of the door 15 relative to the door surround 1. The locking bar 30 is moved against the force of springs 40 by the action of the lock 28 so that the bolts 39 extend through the holes 41 in the side member 8.
A curtain plate 42 may be provided on the outer-face 25 of the door 15 to prevent access to the bolts 39 from the outer-face 3 of the door assembly. The curtain plate 42 may extend substantially all the way along the outer surfaces 23 of the members 16 and 8 or may extend only over sections which may be adjacent to the bolts 39.
Additional and/or alternative clamping means may be provided. For example, there may be clamping legs 41 attached to the bars 35 by connector rods (not shown) which extend through holes 43. Such clamping legs may be used along the length of the bars 35 and provide additional clamping means without extending across the width of the door opening and thereby impeding passage through the door.
Different designs of bar 35 may be used; for example, the bar 35 may be of a general C-shape rather than a Zshape.
The door of this invention although described hereinbefore with specific reference to doorways can equally well be adapted for use with windows or other entrances or exits either internal or external to a structure and Claims should be construed accordingly.
The connector rods may be replaced by non rigid connectors which may, for example, comprise a wire rope with an attachment hook on the end to fix onto the door surround 1, and ratchet fittings at the end of the rope connected to the bar 36, to facilitate tensioning of the rope.

Claims (15)

1 A security door assembly for occluding an aperture in a wall of an enclosure, the assembly comprising a door surround structure which, in use, extends beyond the aperture to abut the wall on the outside of the enclosure, clamping means to secure the door surround structure to the wall, a door of a size to occlude an opening in the door surround structure and to open outwardly of the enclosure, and locking means to lock the door to the door surround structure against opening of the door.
2 An assembly as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the locking means is shielded from at least one face of the assembly.
3 An assembly as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the locking means comprises a bar movable in the assembly, and having at least two protrusions thereon which are adapted to engage with the door surround structure at separate respective locations to restrict movement of the door relative to the door surround structure.
4 An assembly as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the bar is horizontally disposed in use.
5 An assembly as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the bar is vertically disposed in use.
6 An assembly as claimed in Claim 3, 4 or 5, wherein the bar has three protrusions thereon.
7 An assembly as claimed in any one of Claims 3 to 6, wherein the bar is acted upon by a spring to move the protrusions out of engagement with the door surround structure in the absence of any other force.
8 An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the clamping means includes a longitudinally expandable bar.
9 An assembly as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the clamping means comprises first and second longitudinally expandable bars which, in use, are disposed on the face of the wall on the inside of the enclosure, and connector members which, in use, attach the door surround structure to the bars.
10 An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein there is provided a substantially planar member attached to the door surround structure and extending perpendicular thereto.
11 An assembly as claimed in Claim 10 when dependent upon Claim 9, wherein the planar member provides attachment points for the connector members.
12 An assembly as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the clamping means comprises a plurality of elongate clamping legs which in use, are attached to the door surround structure at the edges of the door surround structure, the legs being engagable with the face of the wall on the inside of the enclosure.
13 A lock for use in a door, the lock comprising a bar having at least two protrusions thereon which are engagable with a stationary member adjacent to the door to restrict movement of the door relative to the stationary member, and means to move the protrusions into and out of engagement with the stationary member.
14 A security door assembly substantially as described herein with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
15 A lock substantially as described herein with reference to and as shown in any one of Figs. 1 to
8 or as shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
