Abstract

A pallet comprises a rectangular sheet aluminium panel 10 of corrugated configuration and having in plan view sides parallel with the corrugations and stiffening bars 15 attached one to each end of the panel and disposed substantially flush with one face of the panel 10 and extending from side-to-side of the panel. The corrugated configuration provides for accommodation of lifting forks B for handling, and the stiffening bars 15 improve the loading capacity of the panel. The ends of the panel 10 are configured to lie in respective planes which are mutually convergent towards the other face of the panel so enabling the pellet to be stacked with other pellets of the same construction, when not in use, easily and without jamming together. Aluminium or aluminium alloy hollow section bars are used for the stiffening bars 15. On the underside of the panel 10 are welded stiffeners 18 in the form of half-round stock material (see figure 2, not shown). In a modification the stiffeners 18 are formed by indentations in the panel 10. <IMAGE>

Description

PALLETS FOR USE IN LOAD HANDLING This invention relates to pallets for use in load handling.
The invention is concerned particularly with such pallets as are adapted for handling by forklift trucks.
According to the present invention, there is provided a pallet comprising a rectangular panel of corrugated configuration and having in plan view sides parallel with the corrugations and ends normal to the sides, and stiffening bars attached one to each end of the panel and disposed substantially flush with one face of the panel and extending from side-to-side of the panel.
The corrugated configuration provides for accommodation of lifting forks for handling, and the stiffening bars improve the loading capacity of the panel.
Preferably, the ends of the panel are configured to lie in respective planes which are mutually convergent towards the other face of the panel.
The ends configuration enables the pallet to be stacked with other pallets of the same construction, when not in use, easily and without jamming together.
Preferably, the panel is formed from aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet material.
Preferably, also, the stiffening bars are of hollow section aluminium or aluminium alloy stock material.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective partially exploded view of a pallet in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a partial sectional side elevation of stacked pallets, and taken on the line II-II in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, a pallet consists of a rectangular panel 10 of corrugated configuration of which the sides are parallel with the corrugations and the ends are normal to the sides. In plan view, the panel 10 is dimensioned to conform to accepted or standardised pallet measurements, namely 1200mm x 800mm ("Euro") or 1200mm x 1000mm ("UK"). In each case, the panel sides have the longer dimension. In Fig. 1, the top of the panel, ie.
the load-bearing face, is indicated by arrow A and is constituted by two relatively broad lands 11, 12 typically of width 220mm and two relatively narrow lands 13, 14 of width about 30mm and which form the side edge portions of the panel 10. The depth of the corrugations or the panel thickness is about 100mm; and the corrugations are formed with sloping sides consistent with the following additional dimensions, namely the gap between the aforementioned lands is 100mm maximum (top) and 50mm minimum (bottom). The panel 10 is formed from aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet material about lmm thick.
Stiffening bars 15 are fitted one to each end of the panel 10, extending from side-to-side of the panel and effectively flush with the lands 11, 12, 13 and 14. Each stiffening bar 15 has laterally extending end portions 16 which are received beneath the lands 13, 14. The stiffening bars 15 are attached to the panel 10 by welds indicated by reference numeral 17. The stiffening bars are formed from hollow section aluminium or aluminium alloy stock material, nominally 20mm by 20mm.
The underside of each land 11, 12, is provided with stiffeners 18 in the form of half-round stock material welded in place as shown in the topmost pallet illustrated in Fig. 2. In a modification, the stiffeners 18 are in the form of cold-formed indentations, as shown in the lowermost pallet illustrated in Fig. 2. In one form or the other, the stiffeners 18 improve the rigidity of the lands 11, 12 and also constitute load-spreading members when engaged by lifting forks (not shown) inserted in the direction of arrows B in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 2, the ends of the panel 10 are configured to lie in respective planes which are mutually convergent towards the bottom of the panel. More particularly, this convergence constitutes a relief of the order of a few millimetres (eg. 7mm) so that a number of pallets can be stacked easily without the end of one panel jamming or binding on the stiffening bars 15 of underlying pallets.
In a modification within the scope of the present invention the sloping sides of the corrugated configuration of the panel are apertured to accommodate the insertion of lifting forks transversely of the direction indicated by arrows B.

Claims (5)

1. A pallet comprising a rectangular panel of corrugated configuration and having in plan view sides parallel with the corrugations and ends normal to the sides, and stiffening bars attached one to each end of the panel and disposed substantially flush with one face of the panel and extending from side to side of the panel.
2. A pallet according to claim 1, wherein the ends of the panel are configured to lie in respective planes which are mutually convergent towards the other face of the panel.
3. A panel according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the panel is formed from aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet material.
4. A panel according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the stiffening bars are of hollow section aluminium or aluminium alloy stock material.
5. A pallet substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
