Abstract
A bird feeder comprises a tapering container 10 for bird feed 30, the container being closed at its wider end, having a feeding tray 14 mounted to its narrower end, and having openings 26 allowing bird feed to pass onto the feeding tray from the interior of the container. The openings 26 can be closed when desired by a closure 27. The feeding tray is protected from rain by the overlying wider end of the container. The feeding tray 14 is removable to open the narrower end of the container, so that the container can be inverted and refilled with bird seed. <IMAGE>
Description
Bird Feeder
This invention relates to a bird feeding device, or bird feeder.
Bird feeders hitherto known include a feeding tray for the seed etc, but suffer the problem that the tray is not protected from rain. The seed therefore becomes wet, and then ferments.
I have now devised a bird feeder which overcomes this problem.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided a bird feeder which comprises a tapering container for bird feed, the container being closed at its wider end, having a feeding tray mounted to its narrower end, and at least one opening allowing bird feed to pass onto the feeding tray from the interior of the container when the container is positioned vertically with its narrower end lowermost.
In use of this bird feeder, bird feed on the feeding tray is protected from rain by the wider end of the tapering container, which overlies the feeding tray. The tapering container provides a large volume for bird feed, which falls progressively under gravity onto the feeding tray as feed previously on the tray is consumed.
The tapering container, including its closed wider end, may comprise a one-piece structure, in which case the feeding tray is removable to open the narrower end of the container, so that the container can be inverted and refilled with bird feed.
The bird feeder may be formed of plastics material: alternatively it may be formed of metal (e.g. metal mesh) and thus resistant to squirrels.
Preferably a closure is provided for closing, when desired, the opening or openings from the interior of the container to the feeding tray.
Preferably the container includes a peripheral rim or lip at or adjacent its wider end, this rim projecting outwardly beyond the feeding tray, so that rain water drips to ground beyond the tray.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a vertical section through a bird feeder in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a bird feeder which comprises a container which has a tapering portion 10 and a closure portion 12 at the wider end of the tapering portion.
The bird feeder also has a feeding tray 14 mounted to the narrower end of the tapering portion 10. The tapering container portion 10 is circular in section and the closure 12 has a cylindrical wall 16, connected to the top of the tapering container portion 10 by an annular flange 17, and a flat circular top 18. A peripheral rim or lip 19 projects outwardly from the closure 12 and inclines downwardly.
The bird feeder further comprises a metal rod 20 which extends along the axis of the container 10, 12 and has a hook 21 at its upper end, for use in suspending the feeder. The rod 20 passes through a rubber seal 22 in the top 18 of the container, and has a washer 23 fixed to it, on which the seal 22, and therefore the container, rests. The lower end of the rod 20 is threaded and passes through the tray 14, which is held in place by a wing nut 24 screwed onto the end of the rod 20. A series of openings e.g. 26 are formed in the tapering portion 10 at its lower end, to allow bird feed (e.g. seed) to pass onto the tray from the interior of the container.
The openings are provided with a closure in the form of a ring 27, which can be moved either by rotation or axial sliding between open and closed positions. The tray 14 has a peripheral, upstanding rim 15, as shown.
The container 10, 12 provides a large volume for bird feed 30, and is filled by removing the tray 14, inverting the container, pouring feed into it, and then replacing the tray 14.
In use, the feeder is suspended in the orientation shown, and the feed passes onto the tray 14 through the openings 26. The tray is protected from rain by the upper part of the container, which overlies the tray. In particular, the peripheral rim or lip 19 projects outwards substantially beyond the periphery of the tray.
In the example shown, the container 10, 12 comprises a one-piece component formed of plastics by rotational moulding.
Claims (7)
1) A bird feeder which comprises a tapering container for bird feed, the container being closed at its wider end, having a feeding tray mounted to its narrower end, and at least one opening allowing bird feed to pass onto the feeding tray from the interior of the container when the container is positioned vertically with its narrower end lowermost.
2) A bird feeder as claimed in claim 1, in which said container comprises a one-piece structure.
3) A bird feeder as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which said feeding tray is removable from the container to open the narrower end of the container, so that the container can be inverted and refilled with bird feed.
4) A bird feeder as claimed in any preceding claim, comprising a rod which extends through the container from its narrower end to its wider end and projects from said wider end, the feeding tray being mounted to one end of said rod and the opposite end of said rod being hooked for use in suspending the feeder.
5) A bird feeder as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a closure capable of closing the opening or openings from the interior of the container to the feeding tray.
6) A bird feeder as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the container includes a peripheral rim at its wider end, said rim projecting outwardly beyond the periphery of the feeding tray.
7) A bird feeder substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
