226,879. Brunler, A. O., and Mackay, D. M. Oct. 1, 1923. Subaqueous and blowpipe burners.-A liquid or gaseous fuel burner suitable for generating or superheating steam, heating chemical liquids, and for employment either with the flame in direct contact with the liquid, gas, or vapour to be heated or enclosed in a tube comprises a fireclaylined tube b, one end of the tube, being inserted into the space to be heated and the. other end being enlarged and provided with a removable cover e having an inner fireclay cap e<1>. The lining, which may be in one piece, or in two parts a, d, is heated initially to red heat either electrically or by a blowlamp flame. The cap or cover e is then placed in position and fuel and air supplies are turned on and are ignited by the hot tube. The fuel and air supplies may enter through the cover e or through a side opening in the tube. In the burner shown, the flame is used for superheating steam passing down a pipe x to which the burner is attached by a bracket f. The flame may be separated from the steam by being enclosed in fireclay lined extension z of the tube b extending for any desired distance along the pipe x. The tube b may be surrounded by a water jacket or may have fins &c. for increasing its radiation of heat. Specification 208,186 is referred to.
