Abstract
A top mounting door closer has a shaft 7 mounted in a casing 1 and biased in a closing direction by spring 2 in the casing and a damping piston 13 connected to the closer shaft 7. A pivotal actuating arm external of the casing 1 is coupled to an end of the closer shaft 7 which projects from the casing and engages through a slideblock in a slide bar which is fitted in a door frame or door leaf. The closer shaft 7 has a lift cam 10 and the end of the closer shaft 7 remote from the actuating arm 26 is mounted in a mounting 28 within the casing 1. <IMAGE>

Description:
The invention relates to a door closer as set out in the preamble of claim 1.
A door closer of this kind is disclosed by a publication of the Lancer company. Their door closer has a closer shaft with toothing engaged by a rack piston. The disadvantage of closers of this kind is that the rack makes them suitable for only one kind of assembly. Also, for assembly reasons the axial mounting of the closer shaft has been moved out of the casing. The closer is therefore of relatively substantial overall height and so the closer cannot be used in framed doors made of aluminium or steel. When door closers having a rack piston are used in association with slide bars or rails, the closers have an undesirable rising torque when the door starts to open.
DE-OS 20 15 302 discloses a door closer which can be fitted in a door frame or in the actual door. This door closer is a tubular member in which an axially mobile closing piston and a braking piston co-operating therewith are disposed. When the door opens the spring is stressed so that the door can be closed by spring force. Liquid in the casing damps the closing movement of the door.
All the known commercially available door closers in association with a slide bar assembly making them suitable for mounting in doors have their axial mounting outside the casing to facilitate assembly of the door closer. Only in this way can the compression spring and the rack be disposed in the casing.
It is the object of the invention to provide a top mounting door closer for assembly in the moving members or surround framing of doors which can be used both for right-hung and left-hung doors to DIN and can also be used with framed doors of aluminium or other metal.
The operative features of claim 1 solve this problem. The sub-claims disclose advantageous developments. The use of a lift cam having symmetrical camming surfaces enables the closer to be used for both right-hung and left-hung doors to DIN. Another important feature is the non-external bottom axial mounting of the door closer shaft. Such mounting is shifted to inside the casing, a feature made possible because the door closer has a damping piston and an opening piston each introducible from one of the long sides. The overall height of the door closer is therefore reduced considerably and it can therefore be fitted in the frame. If the door closer was to be fitted only in wooden doors, the relatively high door closer casing would of course be unimportant.However, it is precisely in the case of framed doors, whose frames must not be of excessive size, that it is important for the door closer casing to be of a size enabling the door closer to be concealed in the frame.
Since the two camming surfaces of the lift cam are symmetrical, the torque pattern of the door closer is the same in both directions of rotation, and so damping of the closing movement is uniform in both directions.
Because of its relatively reduced overall height the door closer can therefore be fitted in the door and in the case of framed doors, within the door crosssection and, in association with a slide bar disposed in the frame above, does not disturb the user in any way. This kind of assembly is of very good appearance, yet gives the user the comfort of a door which has an externally mounted door closer.
The invention will be described in greater detail hereinafter with reference to an embodiment diagrammatically shown in the drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view of a door closer in longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 shows a door closer when fitted, and
Fig. 3 is a sectioned view in side elevation of a door closer when fitted.
Fig. 1 is a view in longitudinal section showing the door closer and its casing 1. Disposed therein is a closer shaft 7 whose axially outer end 6 extends out of the casing 1. The other end of the shaft 7 is mounted in a mounting 28 in the casing 1. A lift cam 10 is frictionally and positively connected to the shaft 7. The cam 10 has two symmetrical lift camming surfaces in order that the door closer may exert the same torque in both turning directions. Transmission rollers 11, 12 are in contact with the cam 10 and mounted in pivot pins 17, 18. Pin 17 is mounted in opening piston 9 which is biased by compression spring 2. At its other end the spring 2 is retained by a supporting disc 30. The latter is disposed on spring adjuster 3 which provides steplessly variable adjustment of the spring force. The casing is closed at this end by a screw plug 4.
The pin 18 is disposed in the opposite damping piston 13. The casing is closed at this end by a screw plug 15. Fixings 5, 14 for a mounting plate are disposed at the top of the casing 1. The plate 23 is screwed to the fixings 5, 14. The plate 23 is connected by way of screwthreaded elements 24 either to the door leaf 20 or to the door frame. An actuating arm 26 disposed in a recess in the door 20 is secured to the axially outer end 6 of the shaft by way of a fixing element 29. The other end of the arm 26 is mounted by way of a slide block fixing 27 in slide bar 22. The latter is secured by fixings 25 to the door frame 21 disposed above the door leaf 20. The slide bar 22 is disposed in a recess in the door frame 21 and so the complete door closer assembly can be concealed either in the door frame or in the door leaf.
Since the mounting 28 of the shaft 7 has been shifted to inside the casing 1, the overall height of the door closer is reduced. The reason for this is that the use of the lift cam makes it possible to use two pistons which are introduced into the casing 1 from the long sides after the fitting of the closer shaft.

Claims (7)
- CLAIMS 1. Top mounting door closer with slide bar linkage for concealed fitting in door leaves or door frames, the door closer having a shaft operable by a spring arrangement in the closing direction, a damping piston operatively connected to the closer shaft and a pivoting actuating arm coupled at one end with the closer shaft and engaging, by way of a slide block at its other end, in a slide bar let into the door frame or into a door leaf, characterised in that the closer shaft (7) has a lift cam (10) and the closer shaft end (19) which does not extend out of the casing (1) is mounted in an axial mounting (28) in the casing (1).
- 2. A door closer according to claim 1, characterised in that the cam (1) has two symmetrical camming surfaces.
- 3. A door closer according to claims 1 and 2, characterised in that the force of the compression spring (2) can be adjusted steplessly by way of the spring adjuster (3).
- 4. A door closer according to claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the axial mounting (28) of the closer shaft end (19) inside the casing is disposed between the cylinder chambers of the opening piston (9) and damping piston (13).
- 5. A door closer according to claims 1 to 4, characterised in that that end of the casing (1) which is remote from the axially outer end (6) of the shaft (7) has no projection towards the outside.
- 6. A door closer according to claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the door closer can be fitted in framed doors.
- 7. A top mounting door closer substantiaily as herein described with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings.
