Abstract
A golf tee for use with an artificial playing surface comprises a support 9 for a golf ball secured to a first end of an elongate arm 3. A mounting 4 is secured to a second end of the elongate arm 3 and which is adapted to be secured to a playing surface so that the arm 3 and support 9 may be rotated about the mounting 4. The height of the support 9 above the playing surface can be adjusted by rotation about the mounting 4. In modifications, not shown, two or three arms having different support heights may be provided. <IMAGE>
Description
GOLF TEE PEG
This invention relates to a golf tee peg particularly but not exclusively for use with artificial playing surfaces.
Artificial playing surfaces find use in golf driving ranges and in other locations where natural turf is not available. These take the form of plastics matting mounted upon an appropriate backing material. Conventional spiked tee pegs or moulded rubber tee pegs may be employed with artificial surfaces but a hole or socket must be provided in the playing surface to receive the tee peg. A problem arises at the edge of the playing surface which is cut to form the hole or to receive a socket. Impact from golf clubs at the cut edge causes the playing surface to delaminate or fray making frequent replacement or repair necessary.
According to the present invention a golf tee peg comprises a support for a golf bail secured to a first end of an elongate member. a mounting secured to a second end of the elongate member remote from the first end; said mounting adapted to be secured to a playing surface and arranged so that the support may be rotated in use about the mounting.
Use of a tee peg in accordance with this invention allows the support to be fastened to the playing surface remote from the area of likely impact by a golf club. In preferred embodiments of the invention the elongate member has sufficient length so that the mounting is received into the material which forms the border of the playing surface rather than the matting in the region of the playing surface remote from the ball. The position of the tee peg may be adjusted by rotation of the elongate member. This reduces localised wear of the playing surface.
The elongate member may allow repositioning of the support and reduces movement of the support after the ball has been struck. This affords an advantage over use of a flexible cord to secure the tee peg to the periphery of the playing area. A flexible cord would make it necessary for the tee peg to be repositioned after each strike. This is inconvenient if a large number of balls are to be driven as may be the case on a driving range.
Preferably. the elongate member is formed from a resilient material. A resilient elongate member absorbs some of the energy which may be transferred to the tee when the golf ball is struck. This helps to minimise damage to the playing surface.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the tee peg comprises a plurality of supports mounted on respective elongate members extending radially from a single mounting.
Alternatively two or more mountings may be provided to ensure secure location of the support or supports. The supports may be arranged to hold golf balls at different heights above the playing surface. allowing a player to select the height of the tee peg by simple rotation of the apparatus.
The invention is further described by means of example but not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a tee peg in accordance with this invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the tee peg shown in Figure 1:
Figure 3 is a plan view of a further tee peg in accordance with this invention:
Figure 4 is an elevation of the tee peg shown in Figure 3: and
Figure 5 is a plan view of a further embodiment of the invention
The tee peg shown in Figures 1 and 2 comprises an annular support 9 for a golf ball 2. The support 9 is secured by legs 8 to a base portion 1. An elongate member 3 formed from rigid plastics material, for example polypropylene extends from a first end at the space 1 to a mounting 4 having a threaded portion 7 received in a bore in the base of the tee peg mat 5. The mounting 4 does not penetrate the synthetic grass surface 6. The support 9 may be rotated about the mounting 4 as convenient.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate an alternative embodiment of the invention wherein a single mounting 11 is connected to two supports 14. 15 by respective elongate members 13. 12.
ihe support 14 is arranged to hold the ball at a greater height from the playing surface to the support 15. When a player desires to change to a different height of tee peg, he rotates the apparatus about the mounting 11 to position the tee peg above the artificial turf.
Figure 5 shows a further embodiment of the invention wherein three supports 24. 25 and 26 are connected by respective elongate members 21. 22 and 23 to a single mounting 20. Rotation of the apparatus about the mounting 20 allows a player to select any of three heights of tee peg.
