Abstract

A slatted bottom for an item of furniture has slats (3) housed in holes (4, 5) in furniture frame parts (1, 2), which holes have substantially the same cross-section as the slats (3). In the frame parts (1, 2) at the broad side of each hole, there is an opening (6) out to the surface of the frame part such that the breadth of the opening (6) is smaller than the greatest breadth of the holes to enable the slat to be retained in the hole. The slats can be mounted in the open-sided hole with a twisting movement or with a light blow without the need to lead the slat in axially towards the end of the hole.

Description

SLATTED BOTTOM FOR AN ITEM OF FURNITURE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a slatted bottom for an item of furniture, where the bottom comprises a number of slats provided with rounded side edges, and where the slats extend between two parallel frame parts.
With the known slatted bottoms, the slats sit in bottom holes provided in each frame part. When the slatted bottom is assembled, the slats are first placed in the holes in the one frame part, after which the second frame part is moved in over the free ends of the slats. However, the problem is that the slats have different angular positions when they are only placed in holes in the one frame part.
With systems where the furniture is sold as an assembly set, it is therefore a relatively great practical problem for the buyer to assemble the slatted bottom.
EXPLANATION OF THE INVENTION The problem is solved by providing the frame parts with holes which are of substantially the same cross-section as the slats, and into which the slats are placed, where in at least one frame part, for a broad side on a slat surface, in each hole there is a corresponding break-through to the surface of the frame, so that the breadth of the breakthrough is less than the greatest breadth of the hole.
With the slatted bottom according to the invention, it is possible to place the slats firmly in the one frame part first, while the other frame part, which has break-throughs at each hole, can be connected, in that the free end of each slat is twisted a little so that its one side edge goes down through the break-through and is housed in the hole, after which the other side edge can be turned down into place. Alternatively, the break-through can be configured with a clearance of suitable size, so that the slat can pass the break-through's clearance in the whole of 'its length while being influenced by pressure or by a light blow.
THE DRAWING An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the drawing, where fig. 1 shows a slatted bottom according to the invention seen in perspective, fig. 2 shows a first frame part for use with the slatted bottom according to the invention, fig. 3 shows a second frame part for use with the slatted bottom according to the invention, figs. 4 and 5 show the principle employed in the mounting of a slat in two different ways in the second frame part, fig. 6 shows a section through the first frame part with a sleeve, and fig. 7 shows in section the mounting of the bottom for a bed between the frame parts.
DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENT The slatted bottom according to the invention is built up of a first frame part 1 and a second frame part 2, extending between which there are a number of slats 3.
As shown in fig. 2, the holes 5 provided in the first frame part 1 are configured with about the same cross-section as the slats, but they are dimensioned so as to allow a small amount of play between the hole 5 and the slat 3.
As shown in fig. 3, the second frame part 2 can be configured with holes 4, the one side of which is provided with a break-through 6 which extends over most of the one side of the hole 4's cross-section. Due to the arcuate form of the parts 7 of the hole, which correspond to the side edges 8 of the slats, the break-through 6 is slightly smaller in breadth than the greatest breadth of the hole, and thus the breadth of the break-through 6 is also slightly smaller than the greatest breadth of the slat 3.
As shown in fig. 1, the slatted bottom can be assembled by first sliding the slats 3 into the holes 5 in the first frame part 1, and thereafter inserting the slats 3 into the holes 4 in the second frame part 2, either by using a twisting movement as shown in fig. 5, or by using a light blow so that the slat 3 in its full breadth is clamped down through the break-through in the frame part 2.
As indicated in fig. 1, the position of the slats in the frame part 2 can be secured with a longitudinal list 17 over the break-throughs 6.
It should be noted that the frame parts 1 and 2 are mutually secured on bars 9 under the slatted bottom before the slats are inserted.
The slats 3 can be made rattle-free in their mounted condition by providing a spring 10 in the holes 5, in that said spring 10 exerts a pressure on the slat 3 in the direction towards the frame part 2. Moreover, in order to prevent the slats 3 from creaking, a sleeve 11 can also be provided around the slats in the holes 5, in that the sleeve 11 will prevent transverse movements in the holes 5.
As shown in fig. 6, springs 10 and sleeves 11 can be combined to form a coherent fitting.
In a second embodiment, in connection with the supporting frame for the slatted bottom, storage space 16 is provided for bedding, in that a thin plate 13, e.g. of masonite, is placed in parallel, longitudinal grooves 14 in the sides 12 of the support frame, as shown in fig. 7. The plate 13 forms an arc between the sides 12 and thus rests on the floor 15 under the bottom. Access to the bedding storage 16 is gained by removing the slatted bottom 1,2,3.

CLAIMS.
1. A slatted bottom for an item of furniture comprising a plurality of slats with rounded side edges and broad side portions which slats extend between two parallel frame parts, the frame parts including holes in which the slats are housed, the holes having substantially the same crosssection as the slats including elongate sides corresponding to the slat broad side portions and curved ends corresponding to the slat rounded side edges, an elongate side of each hole in at least one frame part having an external opening out to the surface of the frame part such that the breadth of said opening is smaller than the maximum breadth of the hole.
2. A slatted bottom according to claim 1, wherein an end of each slat is surrounded by a sleeve in the hole.
3. A slatted bottom according to claim 1 or 2, wherein at the one end of each slat there is provided a spring which can exert a force on the slat in the longitudinal direction.
4. A slatted bottom for an item of furniture substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 or Fig. 6 of the accompanying drawings.
