Tread bands comprise a series of blocks 1 which are flexibly connected by links and some or all of which carry hinged plates 3 pressed by springs 32 so as to grip the sides of the tyre and hold the tread band in place. The plates 3 are preferably hinged to the blocks 1 inside the planes of the sides of the tyre, and the abutment for the springs is provided by in. clined surfaces 41 at the sides of the blocks.
