Abstract

A multiposition swivel coupling for use in an articulating fume extraction arm (Fig 3) comprises a pair of conical coupling members 2, 3 each arranged to swivel relative to the other and means 10, 11, 12, 13, 8, 14 for locking and tightening members 2, 3 together in one of a multiplicity of relative angular orientations. In another embodiment the swivel coupling comprises a pair of coupling members 2, 3; means 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 for locking and tightening members 2, 3 together and multi-waved toothed or pointed locking cam profiles 8 on the mating- faces. <IMAGE>

Description

Description Multiposition Swivel Coupling for use with a fume extraction arm To be read in coniunction with Drawing No. 1011 Articulating arms are used throughout industry to remove fumes at source.
Typically each Articulating arm would remove fumes from an area of about 300mum=1. The existing fume extraction arms consist of tubes joined together by rotary swivel couplings which enable the end of the arm to be positioned over the area where extraction is required.
Currently these swivel couplings are manufactured as two identical hemispherical halves sealed by an '0' ring. The two halves are then bolted together so as to compress the seal. By slackening the bolt off, the swivel coupling can be adjusted and repositioned. Unfortunately the action of tightening the bolt causes the crown of the hemispherical swivel coupling to distort inwards. This distortion results in a loss of tension which is restored by re-tightening the handwheels. Repeated tightening and distortion ultimately causes the coupling half to collapse, thus allowing the arms to pivot downwards.
own owt involvment in redesigning the swivel coupling followed an incident where one of the above arms, with hemispherical swivel couplings, fell into a machine.
The following to be read in conjunction with Drawing No. 1011 Fig (7 > Our invention provides a new style coupling, replacing the hemispherical couplings with conical shaped couplings wbose inherent geometric shape substantially strengthens the coupling's ability to withstand distortion during compression, (i.e. during locking and tightening functions).
The following to be read in conjunction with Drawing No. 1010 Figs (1) (2) (3) and items marked alternative locking and sealing cam profiles.
In addition to the above, instead of using the existing idea which consists of two identical halves sealed by an '0' ring (which requires a substantial compression force before it can be held rigid, Ref Drawing No. 1011 (6) and (7)), our invention provides two different conical shaped male and female coupling halves, whose tapered tongue and groove moulded seal incorporate a multi wave shaped cam profile on the mating faces.
The halves are held in position with a central locking bolt acting on two convex springs which force the cams to lock together. Because of the locking action of the cams, the halves are held rigid with a greatly reduced compression force, thus preventing distortion of the coupling half and possthle co7lapse, As the halves are not locked in position by the bolt but rather pushed together by the spring tension created by the convex spring washers, the couplings can be rotated without losening the locking bolt.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an accompanying drawing No. 1010 Figs (1) (2), (3) and Drawing No. 1011 Items (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7)

    7. A multiposition swivel coupling as claimed in (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) and (6), not necessarily conical in shape but with a multi-wave-toothed or pointed locking cam profile. (See note (5) in Abstract).
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A swivel coupling for use with a fume extraction arm, the swivel coupling comprising a pair of conical coupling members, each being arranged to swivel with respect to the other, and means for locking and tightening the conical members together in one of a multiplicity of relative angular orientations.

  3. 3. A swivel coupling according to Claim 2 wherein the tongue and the groove constituting the seal have mating faces each provided with a multi-wave cam profile.
  4. 4. A swivel coupling according to Claim 2 wherein the tongue and the groove constituting the seal have mating faces each provided with a multi-pointed or multi-toothed cam profile.
  5. 5. A swivel coupling according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein the conical coupling members are held in position by means of a spring-loaded bolt.
  6. 6. A swivel coupling according to Claim 5 wherein the spring loading is provided by a pair of convex spring washers.
  7. 7. A swivel coupling for use with a fume extraction arm, the swivel coupling comprising a pair of coupling members, each being arranged to swivel with respect to the other, and means for locking and tightening the members together in one of a multiplicity of relative angular orientations, the coupling members being provided with mating faces having multi-waved toothed or pointed locking cam profiles.
  8. 8. A swivel coupling substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings Figures 1A to 4D, and 6C.
  9. 9. A fume extraction arm assembly comprising a plurality of tubular fume extraction arms coupled together by a swivel coupling or couplings as defined in any one of the preceding Claims.
