Abstract

A wall structure suitable for, e.g. a barbecue, coal bunker or garden shed is made by building three wall portions at right angles using paving slabs 12 and channelled interconnection elements 14 to 20. <IMAGE>

Description

CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS This invention relates to construction elements, structures built with construction elements and kits including construction elements.
There are many structures which the weekend DIY enthusiast may set his hand at building, for example barbecue stands, compost bins, coal bunkers, ash pits etc.
Often these are made using bricks or specially constructed components which are expensive and/or require too much time or skill to be assembled in a reasonable time.
I have found that it is possible to build structures of the above type using paving or patio slabs as a basic building element, together with special forms of interconnections. In UK, a typical patio slab measures 18"x 18"x (about 450mm x 450mm x 38mm), although the principles described herein may be extended to slabs of different shapes and sizes.
Accordingly, in one aspect of this invention there is provided a structure comprising one or more wall portions arranged vertically or at a substantial angle to the horizontal and made up of a plurality of paving slabs (as herein defined) interconnected by one or more interconnection elements comprising means defining channel portions for receiving and locating adjacent edge portions of adjacent slabs.
The channels may be secured to the edge portions by any suitable means; for example the edges of the channel may be resiliently flexible and resiliently grip the edge portion of the slab; the channels may include gripping pads or the like; they may be bonded to the slabs by adhesive; they may have holes to allow fixings such as screws, fixing plugs etc to pass into the paving slab, or a combination of such fixing methods may be used.
The interconnection elements may take various forms as required by the structure to be built; thus straight sections, L- or corner sections, T sections and so on may all be used. The interconnection elements allow one paving slab to be positioned above another to build up a selfsupporting structure. Different forms of connection elements may be provided, for example of single channel section for securing the lowest slabs to the ground or other foundation, or to an adjacent slab, or for use as a capping. Where doors, hatches etc are required a connection element may include a channel for engaging the edge of a slab and attached to a hinge or other support such as a guide channel. Alternatively one channel of a double-channel element may engage a paving slab or row thereof, and the other channel may engage and locate a door frame.
The interconnection and connection elements may be coloured to blend with the colour of the paving slabs or they may be of a contrasting colour.
In some applications, once the structure has been assembled, the exterior surfaces of the interconnection and connection elements may be removed, e.g. by grinding or cutting, provided the elements are suitably fixed to the paving slabs.
The interconnection and connection elements may be made of metal e.g. galvanised steel or any other suitable material such as plastics or other synthetic material.
The term "paving slabs" is intended to include any cast or pressed slabs used for pavings or patios as well as other slabs or wall elements which may be specially manufactured for use in this invention, for example to incorporate reinforcing material.
The invention also extends to an interconnection element per se for use in the above structure, and to kits for building said structure, the kits including a plurality of interconnecting elements and a plurality of paving slabs.
Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of the features set out above or in the following description.
The invention may be performed in various ways and an embodiment thereof will now be described in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barbecue stand in accordance with the invention; Figures 2(a) to 2 (f) are scrap perspective views of various interconnection elements; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a cavity wall construction, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a garden shed in accordance with the invention, including a roof, window and door.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the barbecue stand 10 is made up of fifteen paving slabs 12 nominally of 18" x 18" x 14" and four main types of interconnection element, namely the single and double channel straight sections 14 and 16, and the single and double channel corner sections 18 and 20.
In this example the channels are made of folded and welded galvanised steel and include holes 22 in the webs to allow the elements to be fixed to the slabs 12 by screws and plugs (not shown). The second row of elements from the top include projecting portions 24 for supporting a tray, or a horizontal platform made up of another three paving slabs.
Referring to Figure 3, the cavity wall construction is made up of single- and double-channel T-piece interconnection elements 22 and 24. Here the inner and outer skins 26 and 28 are spaced by spacer slabs 30.
However, if required, these spacer slabs could be replaced by tie or spacer elements extending between the interconnection elements. The cavity may be filled with insulating material such as polystyrene.
A structure similar to that in Figure 3 may be employed where a multi-binned arrangement is required, e.g. for compost etc.
In Figure 4, a shed 30 is shown, made up of 4 rows or paving slabs 12 interconnected by interconnection elements 14, 16, 18, 20 as previously described. Here, an opening is left for the door, and window, and a door frame 32 and window frame 34 secured to the edges of the slabs by connection elements 16. The shed is provided with a roof structure 36 secured to the top edges of the uppermost row of paving slabs by angled and in-line connectors 20 and 16 respectively.
