Abstract

A cap 14 twisted to engage an aperture 14 in an exhaust pipe or exhaust pipe extension 13 is lockable by a key received in a lock 18 to restrict exhaust flow. Whistles 17 extend through the cap 14. <IMAGE>

Description

Vehicle anti-theft device This invention relates to a device for preventing and/or deterring the theft of a vehicle.
It has been proposed to provide vehicle alarms which are triggered when the vehicle is stolen so as to alert passers by. However, it is uncommon for anyone to pay attention to a vehicle alarm sounding, and in general vehicle alarms can be easily overridden by an experienced car thief.
I have now devised a vehicle anti-theft device which alleviates the above mentioned problems.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a vehicle anti-theft device comprising means for locking the device to the end of the vehicle's exhaust pipe.
In one embodiment the device may comprise a plug which prevents the flow of exhaust gases out of the end of the pipe: this creates a back-pressure in the vehicle's engine which prevents the engine from running. The device preferably comprises a whistle, siren or other wind-operated signalling element which is operated by the flow of gases through the device so as to draw peoples' attention to the vehicle.
The device may lock directly onto the end of the exhaust pipe, but preferably the device comprises a body portion for mounting to the end of the exhaust pipe and a removable cap which can be locked to the body. The cap preferably twist fits onto the body.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a perspective view of an embodiment of vehicle anti-theft device in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawing there is shown the rear end of a vehicle's exhaust system 10 comprising a silencer 11 and a tail pipe 12. The vehicle anti-theft device comprises a tubular body 13 and a cap 14. The tubular body 13 has a frusto conical end which is securely fixed to the tail pipe 12 of the exhaust. An annular flange 19 extends around the inside of the body 13 at its open end and defines a keyed aperture 15 for engagement with the cap 14.
The cap 14 comprises a cylindrical projection 16 which fits through the keyed aperture 15 in the end of the body 13.
An outwardly projecting lug (not shown) is formed on the side of the cylindrical projection 16 to mate with the keyed aperture 15 so that the cap 14 can be twist fitted onto the body 13. A keyhole 18 is formed in the end wall of the cap 14 and receives a key which activates further lugs (not shown) so as to lock the cap onto the body 13. A plurality of whistles or other wind operated signalling elements 17 extend through the cap 14.
The body 13 may be chrome plated or otherwise coated for enhancing the appearance of the device. The body 13 may be formed integrally with the exhaust system.
In use, the cap 14 is locked onto the body 13 mounted on the end of the exhaust pipe 12 when the vehicle is left unattended. If the vehicle is stolen and driven away, the exhaust gases will operate the whistles or other wind-operated audible signalling elements 17 which will produce a high intensity noise. The noise draws peoples' attention to the fact that the vehicle being driven is stolen, and this makes the theft of the vehicle unattractive.
In an alternative embodiment the cap 14 may resist the flow of exhaust gases so as to prevent the vehicle from being started.
