Abstract

A quilt particularly for use in beds or cots for infants or young children has a cover (12) enclosing a body (11) of padding material, e.g. polyester. The body (11) of padding material has bores (13) therein to minimise the risk of suffocation for the infant or child. Ventilation also reduces the risk of the child overheating. <IMAGE>

Description

QUILT This invention relates to a quilt and more particularly a quilt for use in beds or cots for infants or young children.
Recently much concern has been voiced over the use of conventional quilts in a child's or infants's cot due to the danger of suffocation since conventional quilts do not readily allow the passage of air therethrough.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a quilt which eliminates or at least mitigates the abovementioned problems associated with conventional quilts and allow its use in childrens' or infants' cots or beds.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided a quilt comprising a cover enclosing a body of padding material, said body having bores extending therethrough to permit flow of air through said quilt.
With this arrangement, a quilt can be provided which is safe for use in childrens' or infants' beds or cots in so far as it permits the flow air therethrough, therefore minimising the risk of suffocation.
Preferably the bores are provided spaced over substantially the whole surface of the body to allow air to flow through over the whole surface area.
The body may be formed of wadding or any other suitable material as desired or as appropriate. In one embodiment the wadding is fabricated from 100% polyester.
The cover may be formed from a textile material which may have a suitable design or pattern applied thereto by any suitable process.
The cover may be secured around said body of material or alternatively may comprise a conventional duvet cover into which the body of material is inserted and removably retained.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which shows a cross sectional side view of one form of quilt according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown a body 11 of 100% polyester wadding material enclosed within a cover 12 of a textile fabric material.
The body 11 of wadding material has multiple bores 13 extending therethrough which act to enable the flow of air through the body. In the drawing, only three such bores 13 are shown for the sake of clarity, however in practice it is envisaged that a number of bores will be provided spaced over substantially the entire surface area of the body of material.
The textile fabric cover 12 comprises two superposed sheets of material secured together along adjacent edges, one end 14 of which is open to receive the body of material. The edges 16, 17 of the sheets at the one end 14 of the cover 12 can be arranged to be removably secured together in any desired manner, for example press studs, zip or hook and pile fasteners, to form a conventional duvet cover. Alternatively the edges 16, 17 of the sheets at the one end 14 can be arranged to be secured together non-removably in any desired manner, for example stitching or glueing, after insertion of the body of material 11.
In use, the quilt is used in conventional manner in a child's or infant's cot or bed and due to the fact that air can pass through the quilt via bores 13, the material of the cover 12 also being air permeable, the risk of suffocation of the infant or child by the quilt is minimised. Furthermore, the ventilation achieved by air passing through the bores aids air circulation around the child or infant and thus can be effective in preventing the child or infant overheating. Furthermore, in most conventional quilts or covers air permeability is reduced by the washing process causing an increase in the danger of suffocation over the lifetime of the quilt or cover and reduced ventilation of the child. The quilt of the present invention reduces this effect by providing prominent bores which do not significantly alter so far as dimensions are concerned during washing.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
For example, the quilt or cover could be removably secured into a pram or a pushchair by way of any suitable removable securing means, e.g. zip fasteners, poppers, press studs or the like. Alternatively, the quilt or cover of the invention could form a part of a so-called baby nest.
