Description

Title: Roofs DESCRIPTION This invention concerns roofs and, in particular, concerns conservatory roofs.
Conservatory roofs are often constructed these days from polycarbonate roofing sheets supported between glazing bars. Special arrangements are required for ridges and/or eaves of such roofs and it is such arrangements that are objects of this invention.
According to the invention there is provided a roof structure comprising roofing sheets supported between glazing bars having one or both of the following: 1. a ridge structure comprising a pair of ridge legs coupled to a longitudinal ventilation box and means for securing glazing bars to said ridge legs; 2. an eaves structure comprising an eaves beam adapted for securing glazing bars thereto at any desired angle.
In the case of the ridge structure according to the invention it is preferred that ridge legs thereof have means for retaining securing bolts, such as in channels thereof, to which bolts the glazing bars may be secured. Preferably such channels are shaped whereby bolts may only be slid into position along a channel.
The preferred channel has a longitudinal rib therein on which a slotted bolt head can locate. Also the channel edges preferably have inwardly extending lips to prevent withdrawal of the bolt head past them.
In the case of the eaves structure according to the invention it is preferred that the eaves beam has means for retaining securing bolts, such as in a channel thereof, to which bolts the glazing bars may be secured.
Preferably such channels are shaped whereby bolts may only be slid into position along a channel. The preferred channel has a longitudinal rib therein on which a slotted bolt head can locate. Also the channel edges preferably have inwardly extending lips to prevent withdrawal of a bolt past them.
Other preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the following exemplary description given with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a section through a conservatory ridge; Figure 2 is a partially cut-away view of the ridge of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section through a conservatory eave; and Figure 4 is a partially cut-away view of the eave of Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, a conservatory roof 10 has two pitched sections 12 to form therebetween a ridge 14. The roof sections 12 are formed of parallel PVC thermal clad glazing bars 16 supporting polycarbonate roofing sheets 18 thereon and retained by PVC cappings 20 secured to the glazing bars.
Upper ends of the glazing bars 16 are supported by aluminium ridge legs 22. The ridge legs 22 themselves are connected to either side of a ventilation box 24. The ventilation box 24 has upper parallel sides 26 and lower sides 28 that converge towards a base 30.
The base 30 has spaced apertures 32 along its length covered by a fly screen 34 retained under internal lips 36. The sides 28 are indented at 38 and depending from the base at each side thereof are curved members 40.
The indentations 38 and members 40 are to receive cooperating end formations of the ridge legs 22, comprising an upstanding web 42 and curbed web 44, whereby the web 44 can be hooked into member 40 of the ventilation box and the ridge leg pivotted up so that web 42 sits in the indentation 38. The ridge legs and the glazing bars are then secured together.
The ridge leg 22 has a longitudinal channel 46 formed therein for receiving roundhead cross-nut bolts 50. The channel 46 has a longitudinal rib 52 on which the heads of the bolts locate as well as inwardly extending lips 54 to retain the bolts which have to be slid into position along the channel. The bolts locate through and are secured to glazing elements by nuts 58.
The ridge legs 22 each have at their opposite ends to their location with the ventilation box a depending web 60 which has a serrated end portion 62 for attachment thereto of PVC internal cladding 64 which has upstanding slots 66 to receive said end portions 62.
The ridge legs 22 also have occasional ventilation holes 70 therein. The ventilation box 24 has a cap 72 thereon and over that is a PVC capping 74.
On the capping 74 is T-bar 76 onto which slide cresting pieces 78.
As shown by the arrows in Figure 1 a ventilation pathway exists from within the conservatory through holes 70 in the ridge legs 22, the apertures 32 and the fly screen 34 in the ventilation box, apertures (not shown) in the ventilation box lid and out under the capping 74.
Turning to Figures 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings, a pitched conservatory roof is formed of parallel glazing bars 100 supporting polycarbonate roofing sheets 102 thereon and retained by PVC cappings 104. The glazing bars 100 are secured at their lower ends on an eaves beam 106.
The eaves beam 106 sits on a window profile 110 and comprises a first generally L-section part 112 one limb 114 of which sits on the window profile and the other limb 116 extends upwards. At its upper end the limb 116 has a hooked or curved formation 118 on which locates a cooperating formation 120 of second eaves part 122 so that the relative angle of the first and second parts to each other may be altered to suit the desired roof pitch.
The second eaves part 122 also has a channel 124 formed therein. The channel has an internal longitudinal rib 126 formed therein and has inwardly extending lips 128 so that bolts 130 can be retained therein. The bolts 130 have to be slid into position in the channel. The bolts 130 are secured through the glazing bars 100 by means of nuts (not shown) thereon.
On the inwards face of the first part 112 of the eaves beam are serrated projections 132 which locate into corresponding slots 138 of a cladding member 134.
On the outwards face of the part 112 is another serrated projection 140 into which locate gutter brackets 142.
The gutter brackets 142 also have a hooked part 144 that locates in the channel 124 of the eaves beam. At their other end the brackets 142 have a hooked portion 146 over which a hooked portion 148 of gutter 150 locates.
The gutter 150 at its other side locates in a space 152 provided in the brackets 142.
Finally, the glazing bars are capped at their ends by end plates 156.
The arrangements of Figures 1 and 2 and of Figures 3 and 4 may, of course, be incorporated together in one conservatory roof.
