Description

ROOF SUPPORT MEMBER This invention relates to roof support members, and more particularly to a roof support member suitable for use in the construction of a roof canopy, for example, for a conservatory roof.
Modern conservatories may typically be constructed in one of two forms. In the most simple form the conservatory comprises a lean-to in which the roof canopy is supported from a roof support member which is attached to the main structure of the building. In a second typical arrangement, the conservatory may be constructed as an extension projecting from the gable end of the main structure of the building and may have a ridge member supporting the upper edge of a ridged roof, the gable end of the ridge member supporting the apex of a multi-faceted canopy, which extends downwardly therefrom.
A variety of such constructions are known, but they mostly suffer from the disadvantage that the configuration of the canopy, with respect to the number of lights, the pitch of each light, and, at the gable end, the included angle between adjacent triangular lights meeting in a common apex, is predetermined by the fixed configuration of the support members.
At the present time, conservatories and similar structures are often custom-built, and accordingly it is often necessary to design and construct a special configuration of support members to enable non-standard canopies to be assembled.
In British Patent No. 2214964 there is described and claimed an apex forming device consisting of an elongate support member, means for supporting an end portion of the elongate support member from a roof ridge member, a ring member supported coaxially about the elongate support member, and a plurality of frame support arms each having one end portion pivotally attached to the ring member. The apex forming device of GB2214964 has provided a substantial improvement with respect to the gable end of a conservatory enabling both the pitch and the number of the triangular lights of a multifaceted canopy to be varied at will.
However, for lean-to arrangements, and for duo-pitched roofs supported by roof ridge members, there is still a need for greater flexibility in the number and pitch of the lights involved. There is also a need for a roof support member which is of simpler construction than some of those hitherto proposed.
According to the present invention there is provided a roof support member which comprises a roof ridge member having a plurality of arms dependable therefrom, the roof ridge member comprising an elongate rod member, and the arms being secured to the rod member, pivotally mounted thereon, and slidable along the length thereof.
The arms, which may comprise or support the frame of the canopy, may be continuously adjustable along at least a portion of the elongate rod member whereby the distance between adjacent arms may be continuously varied. It will be apparent that, because the arms are secured to and pivotally mounted on, the rod member, the pitch of the canopy roof can be varied to suit the particular application.
The roof ridge member may comprise an elongate solid steel plate or the like, but preferably it comprises an elongate boxlike structure made of a suitable metal such as aluminium, which is secured to a wall of the main structure of the building. In the case of a lean-to, the roof ridge member extends parallel to the supporting wall of the main structure to which it is secured and in the case of a pitched roof structure, the roof ridge member usually extends at right angles to the supporting wall.
The arms, which depend from the roof ridge member, may either comprise parts of the canopy frame, for example glazing bars, or may be frame support arms, having provision for frame glazing bars to be attached thereto.
The elongate rod member preferably extends along the length of the roof ridge member and is preferably spaced apart therefrom and secured thereto by, for example, welded lugs.
In a particularly preferred embodiment according to the invention the elongate rod member is longitudinally extensible so that the supporting length of the rod member available for mounting the arms can be varied. Thus the rod member may be in sections, which telescope together, or the sections may telescope inside one or mor joining collars.
Where the canopy comprises a ridged roof having a multifaceted canopy at the gable end thereof, the elongate rod member is preferably generally U-shaped, extending along each side of the roof ridge member and around the gable end thereof.
The arms may be secured to the rod member in any suitable manner, but preferably each arm has an end portion formed with a hole whereby it may be threaded onto at least a portion of the rod member. Alternatively the arms may be pivotally attached to link members which are themselves secured to the rod member and slidable along a length thereof.
Various embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying Drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a portion of a lean-to conservatory roof comprising a roof support member according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a portion of the roof of Figure 1 in sectional side elevation; Figure 3 shows a cross-section of a glazing bar along the line A-A of Figure 1; Figure 4 shows a perspective view of the gable end portion of a ridged conservatory roof comprising a roof support member according to the invention; Figure 5 shows a scrap view, in sectional side elevation of the mounting of the roof support member of Figure 4 to the supporting wall of a building; and Figure 6 shows a plan view of the ridged conservatory roof of figure 4.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, the lean-to conservatory roof (1) is supported on a box-section aluminium ridge member (2) which is fasted to a supporting wall (3) by screws situated at intervals along the length of the ridge member.
An elongate rod (4), which extends along the length of the ridge member (2) is mounted thereon, and spaced apart therefrom, by welded lugs (5). The rod (4) comprises two or more telescopic sections (not shown), enabling the rod to be extended as required. Mounted on the rod are glazing bars (6), which at their upper ends have holes (7) which enable them to be threaded onto the rod (4). The holes (7) permit both lateral and pivotal movement of the glazing bars (6).
Referring to Figure 3 the glazing bars (6) comprise external capping 8 and internal covers (9) spaced apart by an aluminium section (10), forming a generally H-shaped construction.
The conservatory roof is completed by decorative top and bottom covers (11 and 12), optional finials (13) and flashing (14). A gutter arrangement (15) may also be provided.
The use of glazing bars (6) mounted upon the elongate rod (4) permits the number of glazing bars to be varied, and the distance and position of the glazing bars to be adjusted to accommodate different sized lights. In addition, as a result of the pivotal connection of the glazing bars to the ridge member (2), the pitch of the roof can also be varied as required.
Turning now to Figures 4 to 6, the conservatory ridged roof indicated generally at (20) comprises an aluminium box section ridge member (21) which is fastened to a supporting wall (22) by means of a wall plate (23) and screws (24).
Depending from the ridge member (21) are glazing bars (25), of a construction similar to that shown in Figure 3. At the end of each glazing bar the capping is cut back to expose a section of the aluminium extrusion (26) which has a hole (27) drilled therein.
Elongate supporting rods (28) extend along each side of the ridge member (21) and are connected to a U-shaped extension (28a) passing around the gable end (29) thereof. The rods (28) are supported on, and spaced apart from, the ridge member (21) by welded lugs (30), arranged at intervals along the length of the rods (28). The U-shaped extension (28a) is also supported on welded lugs (30) and is provided with joining collars (31) into which the rods (28) are telescopically inserted. By adjusting the lengths of the rods (28) the length of the support for the glazing bars can be varied as required.
At the gable end of the conservatory the glazing bars (25) are uncapped, and meet at the apex (32) of the multi-faceted canopy.
A gutter assembly (not shown) may be provided if required.
In use, the roof support member of the invention provides for substantial lateral movement of the glazing bars (25) to accommodate different sizes of lights and enable further glazing bars to be added as required. Adjustment of the pitch of the roof can be obtained by pivotal movement of the glazing bars, and the curved end section of the U-shaped rod member (28) which forms the apex of the multi-faceted canopy enables the glazing bars of the multi-faceted canopy to be positioned at any desired angle.
