Abstract

The vehicle has a flat front onto which is fixed a shaped foam pad designed to compress on impact and save the body of the car, lessen shock to passengers and lessen injury to other vehicles or pedestrians. <IMAGE>

Description

This invention relates to the bumpers of mechanical vehicles Background;- Car bumpers are normally a narrow strip of steel or plastic attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.Although a few makes of car have robust bumpers capable of sustaining a small impact without damage to the vehicle, e,g bAAB , the vast majority of bumpers are incapable of protecting the vehicle from the consequences of a moderate impact.
At the same time such is the hardness of frontal construction of vehicles that accidental impact with the human body often results in serious injury.
essential technical features.
The purpose of the invention is to reduce the shock of impact during an accidental contact by means of replacing the conventional bumper with the whole area of the car forward of the radiator composed of foamed rubber or plastic designed to cushion the vehicle on impact.
Depending on the size and weight of the vehicle the depth of resilient material attached to the front of the vehicle may be eighteen inches or more with increasing density from front to back. headlights and air aperture may be incorporated in the moulding. The effect of this full frontal cushion on the front of the vehicle will lessen the shock of impact to a body or object and also protect the passengers. Since most cars suffer considerable damage from even the lightest impact this device will give good protection to the car bodxcept from the most severe impact where it will still help, this invention also applies to rear of car or vehicle if appropriate

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS The claim of this car bumper is that current bumpers on motor vehicles are mostly in#efective except for the lightest cf collisions. Crumple zones are designed to absorb impact but usually at the cost of enormous danage to the vehicle. The essential principle of this application is that a large pad of graduated foam rubber of plastic is a much superior means of decel#eration than vrecking the front of the vehicle. A tennis ball may hit a wall at 100 mph and reverse back without damage. A tin of baked beans will crush on impact. A pedestrian struck by a foam pad at 30 mph will receive less injury than form the solid blow of a conventional metal front. The size and density of the bumper material depends on the weight and design of the vehicle. The principle is that the depth of foam ( 18 inches scems reasonable-) would give a controlled decellleraion zone o three feet for two vehicles in a head on collision
