Abstract

An electrical plug has a body (11) which can be closed by a slidable cover (19). The cover (19), slidingly received on the body (11), holds a contact (12) in position via a retaining stud (23). Each contact pin may be partially surrounded by a projecting lip (21). The retaining stud (23) is placed on top of the contact and may be held in position by the projecting lip (21). <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRICAL PLUG This invention relates to an electrical plug.
With electrical plugs of the type in which one or more contact pins are held in position in the plug by a rivet, it is usual for upward movement of the rivetted contact pins to be restrained by way of one or more projections from a top which closes off the body of the plug containing the contact pins and which is held in position by way of a screw connection.
However, it is desired to produce an electrical plug which has a top which is slidingly received on the plug body for ease of access as opposed to the screw retained top described above.
Thus it will be realised that it is not possible to conveniently have a slidable top on a plug with one or more projections thereon for restraint of movement of the rivetted contact pins, without detracting from the ease of sliding of the top and thus ease of access to the interior of the body of the plug.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an electrical plug of the abovementioned type in which easy access to the contact pins thereof is allowed.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided an electrical plug comprising a body, a cover adapted to be slidingly received on said body and at least one contact means mounted on said body, said plug further comprising a retention member mountable relative to said contact means whereby, when said cover is slidingly received on said body, movement of said contact means is prevented.
With this arrangement it is possible to provide an electrical plug with which easy access to the contact pins is permitted whilst allowing the contact pins to be held securely in position in use.
Preferably said retention member is mountable so as to be held interposed between said cover and said contact means when said cover is slidingly received on said body.
A mounting may be provided on said body to permit said retention member to be mounted relative to said contact means and preferably said mounting is provided around said contact means. Thus said mounting may comprise a projecting lip which defines said mounting and which may be secured to or formed integrally with the body.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of one embodiment of plug according to the present invention; and Figure 2 shows a side view of the plug of Figure 1 . O.
with the top in position.
Referring now to the Figures, there is shown in Figure 1 a plug 10 of conventional type having a hollow body 11 into which three contact pins 12-14 extend and which are held in place by way of respective rivets 16-18. The top of the plug 10 is closed off b way of cover 19 (see Figure 2) slidingly received onto the body 11.
Three pairs of semi-circular lips 21 project from a base 22 of the body 11 of the plug 10 and partially surround the rivetted contact pins 12-14 for a purpose to be described hereinafter. Usually the plug 10 is formed from moulded plastics and in this case, the lips 21 can be formed integrally with the plug 10.
A retention stud 23 is shaped to be slidingly received and retained in position on top of each rivetted contact pins 12-14 by the lips 21. Each retention stud 23, in the embodiment shown in the drawings, is generally cylindrical in shape although it can be shaped in any form as desired or as appropriate.
The body 11 of the plug is adapted around the upper peripheral edge 24 thereof to receive the cover 19 in a sliding manner thereunto. The adaptation can comprise a track (not shown) on the body 11 which is slidingly engaged by a projection (not shown) on the cover 19. If desired, of course, means (not shown) can also be provided to retain the cover 19 in position when it has been slidingly received on the plug body 11.
In use, the wire 26 is placed in the plug 10 and the leads 27-29 are connected respectively to the Neutral, Earth and Live terminals 31-33. Prior to the closing off of the plug body 11 by utilisation of the cove 19, a retaining stud 23 is placed on top of each of the rivetted contact pins 12-14 and is held in such position by way of the projecting lips 21. The cover 19 is then slidingly received on the plug body 11 and the retention studs 23 are retained between the cover 19 and the rivetted contact pins 12-14 preventing upward movement of the contact pins 12-14 within the body 11 of the plug 10.
With this arrangement is is possible to arrange for easy access to the body of the plug whilst preventing any undue movement of the contact pins.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which is described by way of example only.
