Abstract

A gown principally for use by patients undergoing radiography and which is designed to be a universal fitting for adult people of all sizes and which may readily be put on to an unconscious patient. The gown is preferably assembled from three separate pieces of material (10) 11, 12 with a boat-shaped neck 16, short wide sleeves 18 and with the material overlapped to provide a closure, usually but not necessarily, to be worn at the back. The garment is assembled with two side seams 13, two shoulder seams 14, a facing material strip 15 around the inside of the boat- shaped neckline and a hem 17 at the bottom of the garment. The overlapped pans of the material are sewn together so as to be permanently attached at the neckline. <IMAGE>

Description

A PATIENT GOWN THIS INVENTION concerns a gown principally for use by patients undergoing radiography. An object of the present invention is to provide such a gown which is designed to be a universal fitting for adult people of all sizes and which may be readily put on to a patient even when unconscious.
According to the present invention a gown principally but not exclusively for patients undergoing radiography, and comprising neck and sleeve openings, is characterised in that the material of the gown at least substantially throughout the length thereof is overlapped to form a closure, and in that the overlapped parts of the material are permanently attached together at or in the region of the neck opening.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a back view of a gown produced in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof; Figs. 3 and 4 are views of two back panels before assembly of the gown.
In this embodiment the gown is assembled from three separate pieces of material comprising a front panel 10 and two rear panels 11 and 12 which are sewn together with two side seams 13, two shoulder seams 14 and a strip 15 of facing material sewn around the inside of a boat-shaped neck opening 16. A hem 17 is preferably sewn at the bottom of the garment, and sleeve openings 18 remain at the top of the side seams 13.
As can be seen from Fig. 1 the panels 10, 11 and 12 are sewn together as described so that the material of the back panels is overlapping to provide a closure as illustrated at 20 which will normally be worn at the back. The overlapping parts of the back panels are permanently attached by sewing together around the adjacent part of the neck opening 16. No other form of fastening for the garment is required.
The overall length of the garment is in the region of 125cm, the overall width 80cm, and the two overlapping back pieces will each be 52cm in width so that they overlap by approximately 24cm.
The boat-shaped neck is 31cms from side-to-side and 44cms around its curvature on one side. The strip 15 of facing material within the neckline is sewn into place and will be some 4.5cms in depth. The sleeve openings 18 will be 30cms in depth.
The overall chest measurement of the garment is 160cms.
The garment being of such shape and size may be easily put on to a patient even if supine or unconscious, and the sleeves are wide enough to enable the garment to be slipped over the arms with ease.
The overlapping opening ensures modesty and dignity for the patient whilst walking, for example through public areas of a hospital. The lack of any fastening means on the garment is of considerable advantage since in most conventional gowns tapes are used and these are subject to wear and tear particularly when laundered.
In its principal application for X-ray use the garment includes no parts which will interfere with the X-ray image.
Again for this use the colour of -the material is preferably yellow and the material is 100% cotton tufted towelling of 310 grams weight. It is important that the material must have almost no shrinkage i.e. less than 5%.
The gown may have many applications both medical and industrial and may be made of different materials and of different colours. The essential novelty in the garment lies in its simplicity of manufacture, its size and shape thus to fit all adults, and its overlapped opening with permanent attachment at the neckline.
Whilst for preference the garment is made up of three separate pieces of material, it is conceivable that two pieces or a single piece may be used with appropriate modifications where necessary in the design of sleeve.
