Abstract

An electrical plug (10) has wire gripping flaps (11, 12) which retain a cable (13) in the plug securely. The flaps (11, 12) are formed from a resilient plastics material and each has a toothed end (16). The flaps prevent both rotation of the cable and pulling. <IMAGE>

Description

ELECTRICAL PLUG This invention relates to an electrical plug.
It is usual for electrical plugs to have cord grips which act to retain electrical wire connected to the plug in such a manner that any undue pulling of the wire does not adversely affect the connection of the wire to the plug thereby improving the safety of the plug.
Conventional cord grips usually comprise a pair of resilient angled gripping members between which wire is inserted, the resilience of the members retaining therein in gripping contact with the wire.
The problem with arrangements of the abovementioned type of plug is that whilst they act effectively to retain the wire in position in the plug, they do not act effectively to prevent twisting of the wire which can also adversely affect the connection of the wire in the plug.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an electrical plug which overomes or at least minimises the abovementioned problem.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided an electrical plug having at least one wire gripping member to grip and retain in position in said plug a wire connected thereto, said gripping member being adapted over at least a part thereof to restrain twisting of said wire.
With this arrangement is is possible to provide an electrical plug in which a wire connected thereto is retained safely therein and is restrained from twisting.
Preferably said at least one wire gripping member is adapted to restrain twisting of said wire by engagement therewith. Said at least one gripping member may be adapted substantially over an end part thereof and said adaptation may comprise one or more grooves and/or serrations and/or ribs.
It is envisaged that the present invention will find particular application in electrical plugs which are adapted to be permanently wired and which therefore allow no access to the wire although the invention is not to be restricted to this application.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Fig. 1 shows a schematic plan view of one embodiment of electrical plug according to the present invention; and Fig. 2 shows a side view, to a larger scale, of a gripping member of the plug of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the figures, there is shown in Fig. 1, an electrical plug 10 of conventional form having wire gripping members 11, 12 to retain a wire 13 in the plug safely and securely.
The plug 10 comprises a moulded plastics body 14 having three contact pins 16-18 mounted therein for connection to Earth, Neutral and Live terminals of a mains supply respectively. Leads 19-21 of the wire 13 are electrically connected to contact pins 16-18.
The wire is retained in position in the plug by a pair of angled wire gripping members 11, 12 (cord grips).
Each gripping member 11, 12 comprises a resilient plastics elongate body 24 having a toothed end 26 thereto; as is shown more clearly in Fig. 2. The toothed end 26 of the members 11, 12 allows the wire 13 to be gripped in such a manner as to restrain movement of the wire in a manner to be described hereinafter.
In use, the leads 18-21 of the wire 13 are connected to contact pins 16-18 in conventional manner. When the wire is not retained by the gripping members 11, 12, the distance between the toothed ends thereof is arranged to be slightly less than the external diameter of the wire 13. Therefore when the wire is inserted between the gripping members, the members 11, 12 are forced apart, and thus when the wire is in position the resilience of the members 11, 12 forces the toothed ends of the members into gripping engagement with the wire 13.
Of course it will be understood that not only movement of the wire 13 in either of the directions shown by arrows X and Y is prevented by engagement of the gripping members 11, 12 therewith, but also twisting (or rotational) movement of the wire in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction is prevented by the toothed configuration of the end of gripping members 11, 12.
It will also be understood that the end of the gripping members 11, 12 can be adapted in any manner as desired or as appropriate which allows the restraint of a wire connected to the plug in which the gripping members 11, 12 are provided.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which are described by way of example only.
