Continuous-discharge apparatus, rotary; air, controlling direction of flow.-A process of drying or conditioning sugar, salt, &c. consists in disintegrating coagulated lumps of the material and hardening the surface fluid of the crystals by hot air. The moist sugar is fed on to the uppermost of a series of rotatable discs 1, from which it is projected against the casing 3 and directed by a hopper on to the next lowest disc, being finally discharged through shoots 15. Hot air is supplied to the casing through vertical trunks 7 which communicate with arcuate ducts 8 having openings communicating with the interior of the casing. The lowermost ducts may be supplied with cold air. The discs may be formed with radial ribs, and bars 16 may be secured to the inside of the casing to prevent unbroken lumps of material from passing through the apparatus.
