Abstract
Wallpaper stripper 1 comprises a removal edge 10 arranged to be urged against an abutment surface to remove wallpaper when reciprocated, either transverse to or in the direction of the removal edge. The removal edge may be connected to an abutment portion 16 by a resilient member 7 thereby forming a bridge; when resting against an abutment surface, with end 15 and edge 10 contacting the wall. Pressure exerted on the abutment portion will cause it to lie flat against an abutment surface and provide pressure at the removal edge. Edge 10 may be detachably connected to member 7 by a member 12 and bolts 11. The stripper may be fitted onto a power tool (eg. a sander) by means of the recess created by the abutment portion and its sides. <IMAGE>
Description
WALLPAPER REMOVAL
The present invention relates to wallpaper stripper apparatus, a power tool having wallpaper stripping apparatus attached thereto and a method of removing wallpaper.
According to one aspect of the present invention wallpaper stripper apparatus includes a removal edge arranged to be urged against an abutment surface and means for reciprocating the removal edge.
The apparatus may include an abutment portion arranged to slide against an abutment surface with the removal edge being connected to the abutment portion, the removal edge being arranged, in use, in use, to be deflected from an at rest position by engagement with the abutment surface.
The removal edge may be arranged to reciprocate in a direction transverse to the extent of the removal edge or in the direction of the removal edge or both.
The removal edge may be spaced from the abutment portion.
The removal edge may comprise a blade.
The removal edge may comprise a cutting edge.
The removal edge may be arranged, in use, to be biased against an abutment surface when the abutment portion engages an abutment surface.
The removal edge may be indirectly connected to the abutment portion.
The removal edge may be indirectly connected to the abutment portion by a spring. The spring may comprise a resilient plate.
The removal edge may be detachably connected to the abutment portion.
The apparatus may comprise an attachment for a power tool such as a sander tool or a reciprocatable tool. The tool may be arranged to reciprocate the removal edge in a direction transverse to the extent of that edge when the attachment is connected to the power tool.
The abutment portion may comprise a generally planar portion.
The abutment portion may be arranged to rest flat against an abutment surface.
The present invention also includes a power tool having wallpaper stripping apparatus as herein referred to attached thereto.
According to a further aspect of the present invention a method of removing wallpaper from a surface comprises urging a removal edge against the surface and reciprocating the removal edge over the abutment surface to remove wallpaper located on that surface.
The method may comprise reciprocating the blade in the direction of advancement or transverse thereto or both.
The method may comprise causing the reciprocation of the cutting edge only after the edge has been urged against the surface.
The method may comprise urging an abutment portion against the abutment surface and causing the removal edge which is connected to the abutment surface to engage the abutment surface and deflect from its at-rest position with respect to the abutment portion.
The method may comprise altering the pressure exerted by the blade against the surface or, alternatively or additionally, altering the orientation of the removal edge with respect to the surface by altering the pressure exerted on the apparatus comprising the abutment portion and the removal edge.
The method may comprise urging the abutment portion to lie flat against the surface during removal of wallpaper.
The method may comprise reciprocating the removal edge in a direction transverse to the extent of that edge during removal of wallpaper.
The method may comprise causing the blade to move relative to the surface by means of a power tool.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways but one embodiment will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying schematic perspective view of a wallpaper stripper attachment 1.
The attachment 1 includes upwardly extending side walls 2, an upwardly extending front wall 3 and an upwardly extending rear wall 4 which define between them an upwardly extending recess. In use, the base of a power tool is arranged to be located in the recess defined by the walls 2, 3 and 4 with an overhanging portion 5, extending upwardly and forwardly from the rear wall hooking over a ledge of the power tool to maintain the rear of the power tool in position. The front or other parts of the attachment 1 are secured to the power tool in any convenient manner.
The front wall 3 includes a forwardly extending flange 6 and a resilient blade spring 7 is secured to the flange 6 by spaced rivets 8. The blade spring extends forwardly and downwardly from the flange 6.
At the front end of the blade spring 7 a blade 9 having a cutting edge 10 is secured thereto by bolts 11 which extend through an arcuate retaining member 12 to cause one edge 13 of the member 12 to be urged against the spring 7 and another edge la of the member 12 to be urged against the blade 9 to hold that blade in position. The blade may be removed and replaced by slackening off the bolts 11 and sliding the blade out from between the edge 14 and the blade spring 7, if desired, for instance if the cutting edge becomes blunt. The blade may be sharp but with dulled edges to prevent the blade digging into the wall.
In use, when the attachment is secured to a power tool such as a reciprocatable sander, the downwardly facing rear portion 15 is placed against the surface from which the wallpaper is to be removed with the cutting edge 10 also engaging the surface having the wallpaper to form a bridge between the portion 15 and the edge 10. The power tool is then operated to cause the cutting edge 10 to reciprocate in a forwards and rearwards direction, and/or with a side to side motion such that the edge 10 cuts or pushes the paper off its supporting wall. The pressure of the cutting edge 10 against the wall, together with the angle of the cutting edge with respect to the wall can be varied by altering the pressure exerted on the power tool against the wall to cause the shape of the bridge to change between the portion 15 and the edge 10 with the blade support spring flexing along its extent from the flange 6. If desired, the whole of the base 16 defined between the walls 2, 3 and 4 can abut the wall.
The use of the flexible bridge or, alternatively or additionally, the provision whereby the whole of the base can be in contact with a wall enables a substantially constant pressure to be exerted by the blade 10 against the wallpaper or the wall to which the wallpaper is adhered to.
If desired, the blade need not necessarily deflect from its at-rest position and the blade may be the only portion in contact with the wall.
The angle of the blade relative to the wall may be between 100 and 200.
