Abstract
A valve for a fuel cartridge comprises a valve housing 3 defining a valve seat 4 on which a valve closure member 5 is operative to seat to close the valve. The valve closure member is tubular and contains a metal insert 9 to protect the member from a piercing member. Cartridges incorporating this type of valve may be used with devices incorporating a piercing member and intended mainly for cartridges not having valves. <IMAGE>
Description
A VALVE
The present invention relates to a valve, particularly, but not exclusively for use with a fuel cartridge.
Sealed fuel cartridges are available which incorporate a valve and cartridges are also available which do not. The latter are usually pierced by the gas burning device itself on attaching the device to enable the fuel to flow to the device. Once pierced, the cartridge cannot be removed from the device if fuel leakage is to be avoided. Also, if the device itself leaks then leakage will occur in any event. Cartridges which incorporate valves can be attached to devices incorporating piercing devices but there is a possibility that the piercing device will damage the valve thus defeating the object.
According to the present invention, there is provided a valve for a fuel cartridge comprising a valve housing defining a valve seat, a valve closure member operative to seat on the valve seat to close the valve or to be displaced therefrom to open the valve, means for urging the closure member towards the seat and means for protecting the valve closure member against the action of a piercing member.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the valve housing is tubular and defines the valve seat at its upper end. The means for urging comprises a spring constrained to act between the valve closure member and a flange at the lower end of the housing. The valve closure member is also tubular and closes off. This end closure supports a metal insert which provides the means for protecting the valve against the action of a piercing member.
The invention also includes cartridges including the valve.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood one embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which shows a valve incorporated in the top of a fuel cartridge.
Referring to the drawing, the outline of the valve housing is shown at 1 and the valve at 2. The housing is formed as shown to accommodate the valve. The valve comprises a substantially cylindrical valve housing 3 which defines a valve seat 4 at its upper end. A substantially cylindrical valve closure member 5 is disposed concentrically within the valve housing and a helical spring 8 is constrained to act between the base 6 of the valve closure member 5 and a flange 7 at the base of the housing. This spring 8 urges the member 5 against its seat 4 to close the valve. The spring and dimension of the valve are such as to provide a minimum travel of the valve closure member between the fully open and fully closed positions.
At the interior base of the valve closure member 5 a metal insert 9 is disposed. This acts to protect the valve closure member and therefore the integrity of the valve against the potentially damaging action of a piercing device intended to pierce a cartridge not incorporating a valve. This type of valve and cartridge incorporating this type of valve, may therefore be used (assuming they are compatible in other respects) not only with a device specifically provided therefore but also with the devices incorporating a piercing member and intended mainly for cartridges not having valves. This enhances the safety of those types of devices and also the flexibility in the use of the cartridges.
It will be appreciated that the above embodiment has been described by way of example only and that many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
