Abstract
A diverter valve, has a body containing a ball valve member in which a main through bore in the ball applies no significant additional restriction to fluid flow than that imposed by the inlet and outlet ports 5. When the valve is rotated through 90 DEG the through flow is blocked. The ball is provided with two additional holes 10, 11 positioned so that they are blocked when the valve is in its normal open position (fig 1, not shown) and are opened to the supply flow and to an alternative outlet port 12 when the valve is operated. This allows the flow to be diverted to the alternative outlet port. <IMAGE>
Description
LOW BACKPRESSURE DIVERTER VALVE
This invention relates to a valve for use with water or other liquids.
Diverter valves are well known components in plumbing or hydraulic applications allowing a piped liquid flow to be diverted from its normal route to an alternative destination. There are a number of diverter valves used to allow small items of equipment to be easily attached to municipal water taps in domestic or commercial applications.
These valves generally impose some restriction in the flow of the water when undiverted.
In the present invention there is provided a diverter valve comprising a body containing a ball valve. The ball incorporates a main bore hole of such size that the through flow is not subject to significant restriction.
When operated by a 900 rotation of the ball the normal through flow route is blocked. The ball and body are adapted to allow fluid to flow from the supply side of the ball to the alternative outlet when the valve is so operated.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of reference to the accompanying drawing in which :
Figure 1 shows two sections with the valve in normal through flow position.
Figure 2 shows two sections and a plan view of the valve in the diverted flow position so that flow is redirected to the alternative outlet.
Referring to the drawing the valve comprises a body 1 containing a ball valve 2 in which the through bore 3 is of equal or greater size to the inlet supply port 4 and the normal outlet port 5 thus applying no significant restriction to the through flow. The valve is operated by rotating the ball through approximately 900 in the direction shown 6.
In the normal flow position the divert inlet hole in the ball 7 and the divert outlet hole in the ball 8 are blocked by the valve body.
When the valve is operated and the ball rotated, as shown in Fig. 2, the through flow route is blocked 9. The divert inlet hole in the ball 10 is opened to the supply flow and the divert outlet hole in the ball 11 is opened to the alternative outlet port 12. This allows the flow to be diverted through the alternative outlet port.
To return the valve to the normal flow position the ball is rotated through approximately 900 in the opposite direction to 6.
The direction of ball rotation can be handed by use of mirror image configurations of the ball and body.
Claims (4)
1) A diverter valve comprising a body containing a ball valve. The ball
contains a main bore hole of such size that the through flow is not
subject to significant restriction. When operated by a rotation of the
ball of approximately 900 the through flow is blocked. The ball and
body are adapted to allow fluid to flow from the supply side of the
ball to the alternative outlet when the valve is so operated.
2) A diverter valve as claimed in Claim 1 wherein two holes are
provided in the ball in addition to the through bore to allow fluid to
flow to the alternative outlet when the valve is operated by a
rotation of the ball.
3) A diverter valve as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the
positioning of the divert inlet hole in the ball is such that its
opening on the ball surface is blocked by the body of the valve when
the valve is in the normal position and its opening on the ball
surface is open to the fluid supply when the valve is operated.
4) A diverter valve as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the
positioning of the divert outlet hole in the ball is such that its
opening on the ball surface is blocked by the body of the valve when
the valve is in the normal position and its opening on the ball
surface is open to the alternative outlet in the body when the valve
is operated.
