Abstract

A paper cutter which can be used for opening letters and may be capable of being attached on top of a ballpoint pen or on a keyring, consists of a housing in which a carrier for a blade (4) can slide, a resilient V-spring (5) and an actuating button (8) for pushing the blade against the action of the V-spring, which engages ramps (7), so as to protrude for use. The housing is provided with a slot (2b) for receiving, for example, a letter to be opened. <IMAGE>

Description

PAPER CUTTERS The present invention relates to paper cutters, particularly paper cutters of the kind which can be used for opening letters.
A letter cutter may be made of plastic with a metal blade inside and where the blade has to be pressed into action by a press button. Such letter cutters can conveniently be of a shape and size to be attached on top of a ballpoint pen, or by means of a link onto a key ring, or to be attached to various different forms of stationery or other articles.
The problem is to provide such a device from convenient plastics components which operates satisfactorily and is not costly to make.
Accordingly the present invention provides a paper cutter of the above kind comprising a cutter blade and a slidable carrier, a housing in which the carrier can slide, a resilient V spring, and an actuating means, the housing comprising ramps against which the arms of the V spring can act so that the cutter blade can be caused to emerge from the housing for cutting by sliding against the action of the V spring and on release of pressure can slide back into the housing.
Generally all the components except the blade will be of a suitable plastics material.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded view of each of the four components of the system; Figure 2 shows a part of the housing with the V spring in place, and Figure 3 shows a sectioned under side view with the V spring and cutter in place.
Referring to the Figure 1, the paper cutter comprises a main housing 1 having a first slot 2a (seen in edge-on view) into which the cutter blade can be positioned for use in opening a letter. There is also a second slot 2b at right angles to the first, the first slot being to allow the blade to emerge from within the housing and the second to enable a letter to slide into the housing when the cutter is in operation.
The blade cutter is carried on a carrier and this has a longitudinal fin 3 and a blade 4, acting against a V spring 5, and the main housing is closed by a top housing member 6. On this top housing 6, a pair of ramps 7 are located and, referring to Figure 2 it will be seen that when assembled the V spring bears against these ramps. A protruding button 8 on the outer end of the carrier then forms an actuating means.
Referring to Figure 3, which shows an under side sectioned view with both the blade carrier and the V spring in place, it will be seen that pressing the protruding button 8, the blade can be pushed to the right of the Figure against the action of the V spring. When pressure is released, the V spring rides up the ramp and applies pressure to the fin 5 to force the blade back into the retracted position.

Claims (2)

1. A paper cutter comprising a cutter blade and a slidable carrier, a housing in which the cutter can slide, a resilient V spring, and an actuating means, said housing comprising ramps against which the arms of the V spring can act whereby enabling the cutter to be retrievable in use.
2. A paper cutter substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
