Abstract

A rotary fluid connector for hydraulic control lines in a bicycle, has multiple chambers 1, 2 and 3 which are concentrically fixed to each other and together releasably fixed to the inside of the head tube 7 of the cycle and do not rotate relative to the head tube. The chambers are sealed by seals on the top side, which slide around the circumference of the chambers when the steering is turned, which are fixed to a single circular cover 5 which is fixed to the fork tube 6. The hydraulics of the controls (rear brake, front sprocket selector mechanism, rear sprocket selector mechanism) are channelled through a chamber so that the steering can rotate relative to the rest of the bike, but control of mechanisms on the rest of the bike is always possible because each hydraulic channel remains sealed. The whole mechanism is protected by the head tube from collision damage and dust/dirt corrosion. <IMAGE>

Description

HYDRAULIC S-HASH ~LA'E This invention relates to a hydraulic swash plate to govern hydraulic control lines (brakes, gears etc.) of bicycles to allow continuous rotation of steering.
Cycles designed for freestyle/trick manouvres require 3600+ rotation of the steering. The problem of control lines (cables) being wrapped around the head tube is currently solved by the use of a swash plate mechanism which is effectively a 'break' in#the rear brake control line.
The front brake control line avoids being wrapped around the head tube by being routed through the head tube and fork tube. The current swash plate deals with only one control line and is externally situated around the handlebar stem.
According to the present invention there is provided a hydraulic swash plate which deals with 3 control lines by means of ring shaped chambers with rotating seals and the whole mechanism is internally housed between the fork tube and the head tube.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: IZUI7E 1 shows a vertical cross section of the hydraulic swash plate mechanism fitted into position between the fork tube and head tube, revealing 3 chambers and rotating seals.
'IGUSE 2 shows a plan view illustrating the position of the top side nipples, one above each chamber and the strengthening webs.
Referring to the drawings the hydraulic swash plate comprises 3 circular chambers 1,2 and 3 concentrically fixed to each other, and releasably fixed to the head tube 7 to prevent vertical or rotational movement. The seals 4 are tightly fitted into the chambers and are fixed to the cover 5. The cover and seals rotate relative to the chambers, the seals sliding around the circumference of the chambers.
The cover is releasably fixed to the fork tube to prevent it being pushed off when pressure is accumulated in the chambers. The chambers and cover are made rigid by webs 10. The hydraulic pipes are connected to the nipples 8 and 9 which let the fluid pass through the chambers.
The chambers being fixed to the head tube 7 and the cover being fixed to the fork tube 6, allow both parts to rotate independently, and the hydraulics remain sealed while the steering is rotating partly or continuously. The control pipes are internally routed from the control levers to the cover 5 by passing inside the handlebar tubing, through the head clamp and into the fork tube, then out of the fork tube through holes in the site of it.

Claims (2)

CLAI.-IS
1. A hydraulic swash plate comprising nultiple circular chambers concentrically fixed to each other and fixed to the outer head tube, the chambers being sealed at the top by rotating seals which slide along the circumference of the chambers and are attached to a single cover which is fixed to the inner rotating fork tube, each chamber having a nipple above it in the cover and in the bottom of it to allow connection of pipes and passage of fluid through the chambers.
2. Hydraulic swash plate substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
