Abstract

The work bench comprises two flat sections (10, 12) separated by a gap, into which a machine base (not shown) may be inserted to lie with its top level with the two flat sections. The machine base (not shown) is bolted to a rise and fall table (14) which slides from front-to-rear into the gap between the two fiat sections (10, 12). Description

Portable Work Bench This invention relates to a portable work bench for supporting portable electric saws and other machines.

Portable electric saws and other machines as commonly used by carpenters and others out on site include a machine base1 which usually is rested on the ground or on any other available support. However it is not practically ideal to work on the ground and suitable, safe support at the ideal level (waist level) is not often available out on site. Moreover, there is no support for long workpieces being processed on the machine.

I have now devised a work bench which is portable and easily carried out on site, which supports a machine base at appropriate level and also provides support for long workpieces.

In accordance with this invention there is provided a portable work bench which comprises two flat sections separated by a gap, into which a machine base may be inserted to lie with its top level with the two flat sections.

The flat sections of the work bench are preferably constructed of wood. Preferably the machine base is bolted to a wooden section which is inserted into the gap to bring the top surface of the machine base level with the flat sections wither side of it.

An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a perspective view of a portable work bench in accordance with this invention.

Referring to the drawing, there is shown a portable work bench which comprises flat sections 10, 12 separated by a gap which receives a rise and fall table 14 to which a machine base (not shown) is bolted, so that the top surface of the machine base lies level with the top surfaces of the two flat sections 10, 12.

The two flat sections 10, 12 comprise rectangular wooden boards each mounted on the cross-members 15, 16 of boxsection aluminium. The cross-members 15, 16 are in turn mounted on front and rear longitudinal rails 17, 18 also of box-section aluminium. The table 14 slides into the gap between the sections 10, 12 to rest on the rails 17, 18 and with tongues 19 along its opposite side edges projecting below the sections 10, 12: the table 14 also abuts back-stops 20 fixed to the rear rail 18. Back stops 21, 22 are fixed to the rear edges of the sections 10, 12 for workpieces to be engaged against when being processed by the machine.

The work bench has four legs 25 which comprise steel tubes detachably received in sockets in the rails 17, 18.

Instead of detachable legs, the work bench may have legs which are pivoted to the underside of the bench.

Front rail 17 of the work bench has a four-gang electrical power socket 26 attached to it, the socket being connectable to a mains supply and in turn providing a power point for the machine supported on the workbench as well as for other electrical tools.

Claims

1) A portable work bench which comprises two flat sections separated by a gap, into which a machine base may be inserted to lie with its top level with the two flat sections.

2) A portable work bench as claimed in claim 1, comprising front and rear longitudinal rails on which the flat sections are mounted, and onto which the machine base may be mounted.

3) A portable work bench as claimed in claim 2, in which the flat sections comprise rectangular boards each mounted on cross-members which are in turn mounted on the front and rear longitudinal rails.

4) A portable work bench as claimed in any preceding claim, arranged for the machine base to slide from front-torear into the gap between the two flat sections.

5) A portable work bench as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising detachable legs.

6) A portable work bench substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
