Abstract
A pivoted joint for a drum stand consisting of a generally L-shaped component (12) and a cooperating block-like component (14) pivoted together. A limb of the component (12) has two inclined surfaces (16, 18) against the respective surfaces of which a face of a component (12) can rest to define the limits of the pivotal movement of the joint. The joint is stable in both limiting positions and may be clamped in positions between the two limiting positions. <IMAGE>
Description
Title - Pivoted Joint
This invention relates to a pivoted joint and in particular but not exclusively to a pivoted joint for a drum stand.
When a drum stand and drums are assembled the drums must be adjusted in order to accommodate the reach and stature of an individual player.
When the type of drums used includes a cage which consists of a plurality of posts positioned circumferentially around the drum ends and which are connectable to the ends of the drum shell, the drums are attached to the drum stand by a bracket attached to the posts. Consequently the position of the drums may be adjusted by movement of the bracket along the length of the posts.
However, since the posts are the same depth as the drums, the movement is limited to the length of the posts and this will not necessarily provide the degree of adjustment required for any particular player.
Other types of drum do not include cages and have the stand connected directly to the shell of the drum. In this case the movement of the drum on the drum stand relative to an individual player is very restricted and adjustment is time consuming and awkward.
The present invention seeks to obviate and mitigate the abovementioned problem by providing an improved drum stand joint.
According to the invention a pivoted joint for use with, for example, a drum assembly comprises a first part and a second part, the second part being pivotable relative to the first between two limiting positions in each of which the second part engages with the first to define the limits of said movement.
Conveniently the first part has two relatively inclined surfaces lying at an acute angle to one another and the second part has a surface abutting with one or other of said inclined surfaces in said limiting positions.
Preferably, the degree of relative angular movement between the first part and the second part is limited such that the assembly is stable in both limiting positions. Typically, the range of angular movement will be of the order of 30 or less. Most preferably the degree of movement provided between the two parts is of the order of 25".
Clamping means are preferably provided for clamping in any desired position e.g. a position intermediate the two limiting positions.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a pivoted joint according to the
invention, in one limited position;
Figure 2 is a view of the pivoted joint of Figure 1 in a second
limited position; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted joint of Figure
1 when fitted to part of a conventional drum stand.
Referring to Figure 1, the pivoted joint generally designated 10 comprises a generally L-shaped component 12, co-operating with a substantially rectangular block-like component 14. A limb of the L-shaped component is provided with two relatively inclined surfaces 16 and 18 which lie at an included angle of 155 one to another. Protruding centrally from the surfaces 16 and 18 and lying perpendicular thereto is a protrusion 20 (Figure 3). An aperture (not shown) is formed within the protrusion 20 at a central position adjacent the point at which the surfaces 16 and 18 meet.
Formed in the remaining limb of the component 12 are two spaced apart parallel lugs 13, the coupling device of which they form part being described in the applicants co-pending patent application no. BS/FKM/11344.
The block-like component 14 is provided with a central channel 22 shown in Figure 3 extending along the length of a face 24 which co-operates with the L-shaped component 12. The channel 22 receives the dividing wall 20 of the component 12. Provided in each side wall of the channel 22 are three apertures 26, 28, 30. The central aperture 28 serves to receive a pivot pin 32 whilst the two remaining apertures 26 and 30 are screw-threaded and receive screws 34 and 36 respectively as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Figure 3 also shows additional parts of a drum stand 25 including clamps to which arm extensions 27 are attached. At the other end (not shown) of the arm extensions 27 there are respective ball sockets (not shown) which are formed integrally with the coupling device described in the co-pending application no. BS/FKM/11344.
The two components 12 and 14 are joined together by a pivot pin 32 which is located in the bore formed by the alignment of the aperture 28 of the component 14 with the aperture 16 in the dividing wall 20. When the two components 12 and 14 are pivoted together the block-like component 14 moves relative to the Lshaped component 12 in a direction shown on Figure 1 and 2 by the arrow.
In use, the pivoted joint is clamped in either of the limiting positions defined by the surfaces 16 and 18 or in an intermediate position therebetween by tightening the screws 34 and 36. If readjustment of a position is required the screws 34 and 36 may simply be loosened and the pivoted joint 10 pivoted to a new position as required. The pivoted joint is used with a drum and drum stand, and in this particular example with the type of drum, which drum includes a cage which consists of a plurality of posts 38 (see Figure 3) positioned circumferentially about the drum.
Between adjacent posts 38 there is mounted a bracket 40 (see
Figure 3) on to which the li-shaped component 12 is releasably locked by use of a coupling device described in the applicants co-pending application no BS/FKM/11344. The lugs 13 which form part of the coupling device are shown in Figure 1 and 2.
This joint 10 in this particular embodiment is made from a zinc alloy.
An advantage of the pivoted joint is that it enables a degree of movement of the drum relative to the stand. This provides additional adjustment required to accommodate the reach and stature of any individual player.
