Abstract
A fisherman's keep net or rod rest has a joint between a hoop (4) and a bank-stick (2). The joint comprises a screw connection between the hoop (4) and the bank-stick (2) which when loose permits the hoop to pivot relative to the bank-stick but when tightened causes a part of the hoop or bank-stick to bear on a selected one of a plurality of facets (28, 30, 32) on a part of the other which facets correspond to various positions of the hoop relative to the bank-stick. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fisherman's apparatus
This invention relates to fisherman's apparatus, notably keep-nets and rod rests having a stiff hoop and a rod to which the hoop is attached and by means of which it is supported in use. In the case of a keep-net the stiff hoop is used for supporting the net. In the case of a rod rest the stiff hoop is provided with a straight section constituting a rest element on which an angling rod can be supported. The rod is known as a bank-stick. It is desirable to enable the plane of the hoop to be set at a plurality of angles to the axis of the bank-stick. There are constructions known to achieve this, but these tend to be expensive to manufacture, and/or vulnerable to breakage.
The present invention seeks to enable the provision of a joint between the hoop of a keepnet or of a rod rest and its bank-stick (a so-called "angle-lock") which allows the plane of the hoop to be set in at least two positions relative to the bank-stick, yet can be inexpensive to produce and robust in its construction.
Broadly, this invention provides either a keep net or a rod rest having a joint in which a screwconnection between the hoop and the bank-stick when ioose, enables the hoop to pivot relative to the bank-stick but when tightened causes a part of the hoop or bank-stick to bear on a selected one of a plurality of facets on a part of the other of them, which facets correspond to possible positions of the hoop relative to the bank-stick.
In the preferred construction at least part of the hoop is formed by a length of rod, a collar pivotally mounted on this rod carries a threaded spigot to screw into a tapped hole at the upper end of the bank-stick and a further collar is sleeved on the rod alongside the first mentioned collar but is fast with the rod and has a plurality of facets, and the upper end of the bank-stick or a locknut associated therewith bears against a selected one of these facets when screwed onto the threaded spigot.
Embodiments of this preferred construction will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of a keepnet,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a rod rest,
Fig. 3 is a detail of the joint region in each case,
Fig. 4 is a side view of the joint region,
Fig. 5 is a similar view, with the joint in a different position, and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 and illustrating a possible modification.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the keep net there illustrated comprises a bank-stick 2 and a hoop 4.
The latter is formed by an arcuate length of aluminium rod 6 extending around an arc of some 1 20 degrees, and by a length of fairly stiff plastics tube 8 whose end portions are slid over the aluminium rod so as to form a closed loop. In Fig.
2 there is illustrated a so-called rod rest of somewhat similar construction, that is to say including a bank-stick 2 and a hoop 4 again formed by a length of aluminium rod 6 and by a length of fairly stiff plastics tube 8. In this case however it will be seen that the length of aluminium rod 6 is a good deal flatter than that of the keep net and also that it is provided with fairly tight return bends 7 at each end. The plastics tube 8 which extends between the end of the rod 6 constitutes an angling rod rest element on which an angling rod can be supported and the upstanding return bends 7 of the rod 6 constitute end stops to prevent the angling rod sliding off either end of said rest element.
In each case, the joint to the bank-stick is provided at a central region of the aluminium rod 6. In this region there is a collar 10 pivoted on the aluminium rod 6, flanked buy a pair of collars 12 which are held fixedly on the aluminium rod by "seelock" spring pins inserted at 14 through holes in the collars 12 and aligned holes in the aluminium rod 6. The collar 10 has an integral threaded spigot 1 6.
The bank-stick 2 is formed of aluminium tube
with its free end 1 8 flattened and formed to a
point so that it can be dug into the bank or bed of
a stream. The joint end of the aluminium rod is
capped by a short piece of brass tube 20 held in
place by a through pin 22 and having a tapped
central hole 24 into which the spigot 1 6 can be
screwed. It will be seen that the collars 12 are of
square section with one corner milled off to form
a facet 28 between facets 30, 32 provided by
adjoining faces of the original square section.
When the spigot 1 6 is only partially screwed into
the tube 20 the hoop 4 can pivot freely in the
collar 10 but as the bank-stick is screwed up on
the spigot the annular end face 26 of the tube 20
comes to bear on a selected one of the facets 28,
30 or 32 of the collars 12 and so locks the hoop
at a chosen position. It can be locked with the
plane of the hoop aligned with the axis of the
bank-stick as shown in Fig. 4, or with the hoop at
an angle of 45 to that axis (Fig. 5) or
perpendicular to it (not shown) depending on whether the face 26 of the tube 20 bears on facets 30, 28 or 32. The angle of the hoop to the
bank-stick can be readily changed simply by
partially unscrewing the bank-stick, pivoting the
hoop to the desired position and screwing up the
bank-stick onto the spigot once again.
The joint construction described is robust and
yet it can be fabricated at relatively small cost.
The collars 1 2 are, as described, cut from square section brass bar and one corner is milled
off. It will be appreciated that hexagonal or
octagonal section brass bar could be used as an
alternative, or indeed that square section bar without a milled off corner could be used but in this latter case each collar 12 would, in effect,
have only two facets against which the upper end
of the bank stick could bear selectively so that there would be provided only a two position joint
construction.
Various modifications may be made. For example, as illustrated in Fig. 6, the joint may be provided with a locknut 34 in the form of a fairly large knurled ring which can be used to lock the joint in a required angular position. In other words, in this case the locknut can be caused to bear against a selected one of the facets of each collar 12. The threaded spigot 1 6 is screwed tightly into and has bottomed in the screwthreaded hole 24 in the tube 20.
