Abstract

A traffic barrier comprises two plates (2, 3) hingedly attached together and mounted in a box 1. The plates are movable from an inoperative position (Fig. 3) to an operative position (Fig. 4) in which they form an inverted Vee to prevent traffic passing thereover. The movement between such positions is effected by means of a lever inserted into socket 4 or 5. The box 1 also contains dampening means together with adjustment, pivoting and locking means. <IMAGE>

Description

SAFETY, PROTECTIVE GUIDENCE OR, EMERGENCY STOP FOR VEHICLES OR TRUCKS (SVS) This invention re]ates to a. safety protective gildence or emergency stop for whee]ed vehic]es or trucks (SVS) SVS a.re used to contro] moving vehicles or tricks, especia]]y near pedestrian activity, buildings or on ra.ised working platforms A) Permanent barriers. Kerbs, s]eeping policeman, gates, ba.rriers, po]es B) Moveable raiseable.Gates, barriers, chocked and raiseable plates set onto or into the surface fabric Despite this range of equipments, there are sti]] thousands of accidents every week dlle to mechanics.] breakdown a.nd human error, especially in working areas occllpied by people and moving equipment If we examine B) Moveable raiseable barriers The main prob]ems are raised by:-(a.) Substantial impact forces imposed by hea.vy moving vehic]es, when impacting a. barrier, distorting p]ates; hinges; wheel bearings and suspensions, where specialist repair, or replacement can leave a potential hazzard unprotected (b) With height/ angle adjustment, to suit differing requirements of protection (c) Difficulty and expense serving remote installation with an operating power source (e) With simple flip over barriers, in providing safety protection, against the gii]otine action where they contact the grolmd According to the present invention there is provided a. mechanica]]y operated, SVS, easi]y ra.ised and towered by one operator, by means of a.
lever, inserted into a. special socket in the p] ate The angle and height of barrier can be adjusted by increasing/ decreasing the ] ength of an easi]y exchanged stop adjuster Mounted onto, or into the surface, comprising a. base box or similar support, providing adjustment, pivoting anf locking means and a separate easily removeable, exchangeable and adjustable SVS, in the form of two p]a.tes, hinged together with support, adjustment, locking a.nd pivoting means fitted to the p]ates which seats into the base box on shock/ noise absorbing pads, without hinging dependance upon the base box, e]] iminating stresses imposed by fllch direct hinging A specific embodiment of the invention wi]3 now be described by way of examp]e with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure 1 shows a. P]an view of the SVS in the towered position Figure 2 shows a separated common cross section through the SVS Figllre 3 shows a. SUS set typically into a. concrete surface, in a.Towered position Figure 4 shows the SVS in a. ra.ised position Referring to the drawing figure 1 shows a p]an view of the SAFETY, PROTECTIVE GUIDENCE OR, EMERGENCY STOP (SVS) in a closed postion, singles or multiples of which, would typicaly, be fixed into the surface, near the edge of a ra.ised vehic]e ]oading dock. The Stop would be lowered during the process of loading a. vehic]e tra.i]er with goods; when loading trucks require clear access It would be ra.ised upon comp] etion of ] oad ing, when the dock was un occupied by a. vehic] e, to prevent trucks over-running the edge of the ra.ised dock, during processing and assemb]y of ]oads Wherein Figure 1 Comprises a support box 1 and a. separate stop plate 3 hinged through 9, to a support plate 2, laying in the box.T h e s t o p plte 3 can be raised manually by one person, into the locked position, via a lever fitted into socket 5 and lowered with the same lever fitted into socket 4 Figure 2 shows a., separated, common cross section through the SVS in the c]osed position with the: Srop unit, comprising, a tubular support, slide and lock 6 and support frame 7 fixed to plate 2, attached to hinge 9, attached to p]ate 3 supported by frame 10 and tubular support and pivot 11 and Support box, comprising box 1 with fixed supports 12 and 13, to which can be secured a variety of lock blockes 15 with pin 14 or other means, and, support box plates 16 and 19, with shock/ noise absorbing pads 17; a. fixed lock brock 18 and movement restrictor 20 Socket 5 (plte 3) accepts lifting means and socket 4 (p] ate 2) towering means with socket barre] lock 8, fitted to prevent unauthorised use To raise SVS, the operator, facing the stop plate, would place a pole or other lever into sicket 5 (Fig 3) and pull the pole towards their body, causing Plate 3 to pivot on tubular support 11, opening hinge 9 and causing prate 2 via. support 6 to s]ide across 12/ 13/ and 15, unti]] support 6 drops down to lock against stop adjister 15 In this position (Fig 4), stop p]ate 3 would be braced against impact by stop 18 and ]ocked into position by support 6 of prate 2, against stop adjuster 15 The plate so raised would act upon the wheels, or lower body frame of the truck when impacted and effectively stop its movement To lower, the operator facing the stop p] ate, would place the po] e into socket 4 (Fig 4) and pl]] towards their body, which would raise support 6 onto the top of stop adjllster 15, from where the weight of the Imit would callse it to co]]apse into the c]osed position, assisted by restrictor 20 The angle and height of barrier can be adjusted by increasing/ decreasing the length of stop adjuster 15, which can easily be exchanged for an alternative length of stop Both ends of the plates 2 and 3 would be finished with f] at p] ates or other mea.ns, to reduce the size of the opening shown in figure 4, to prevent the entry of operators or others feet It should be noted, that plate 3 is so fitted to the hinge 9 to provide a ]ip to protect against waste material fouling hinge 9
