Abstract
A set of adaptable safety devices on school buses including retractable guards powered by cylinders attached to an accumulator with driver level control comprising: a panel guard having a movable part used to block access under the side right of the bus from the back to the boarding gate or to the front wheel. The panel guard is easily and quickly removable to facilitate maintenance as well as that of the vehicle or to allow access to the luggage bays with which some bus models are fitted. Another also mobile guard is located under the descent from the boarding gate of the bus and blocks access under the door. A third safety element is a remote arm with an extension towards the ground preventing access under the arm when schoolchildren bypass it to pass in front of the bus. All these accessories are activated by the driver by means of a switch added to the vehicle control panel and are deployed simultaneously by the driver when he immobilizes his vehicle to pick up or leave schoolchildren.

~ 98937 M ~ MOIRE DE5CRI ~ TIF 3DRP863 ~ .TEX
TITLE: ~ rear security for buses assigned to School transportation.
C ~ MP OF THE INVENTION
This invention belongs to the field of accessories for safety installed on buses used for school transport and more particularly to the means used to block possible access under buses and to keep schoolchildren away from in front of the bus when boarding and disembarking schoolchildren.
R ~ SUM ~ OF ~ RT ~ NT ~ RIEUR
Typical of the safety accessories present is an arm shown in Canadian patent 102B72B on page 2.1 FIG.l. We can see that the arm in the raised position can obstruct the driver's view. Risk of injury to the head young schoolchildren are possible because the barrier ll is moves in a vertical plane, from top to bottom indicated by the arrow, if the driver activates the mechanism then that a schoolboy approaches the bus without having noticed it.
Finally, the installation of the barrier requires a cut in the barrier vehicle front impact.
Another example of the distance arm is illustrated in the US patent US 4,956,630 on the front page where we see that although the arm 16 moves in a horizontal plane, however the arm in question is fixed at the bumper and thus offers a tempting access for young reckless children who would like venture below to take a shortcut. In addition, there is no protection on the right side of the bus, not more than 50US the descent of the vehicle.
un garde en panneau s'adressant au ch~ssis du cOté droit et comprenant un b~ti fixe et un b~ti mobile, des moyens pour fixer le b~ti fixe de façon amovible sur le ch~ssis; des m~yens de déplacement vertical guidé de haut en bas du b~ti mobile sur le b~ti fixe; des moyens moteurs pour déplacer le b~ti mobile depuis la position du haut jusqu'à la position du bas et de retour;

DESCRIPTION DE L'INVENTION
FIG.~.. situee entre le marche-pied 40 de la descente 38 et le garde-descente 54.

The first is a panel guard 48 used to block a possible access 50 under bus Z0 from the right side Z8 from the rear Z4 of the vehicle up to the front wheel 4Z in the case of bus with a flat front, and from the rear Z4 of the vehicle up to boarding gate 36 in the case of buses with a elongated front since the front wheel of buses in front long ~ ..FIG.l ~ ..located between the front of the bus and the door boarding. I found by checking on several models made by the american company ~ read ~ ird that the distance between the bottom 3Z of the bus Z0 and the ground 5Z forming the access 50 of the right side 28 measures between 18.5 and 21.5 inches tall depending on vehicle models and years of manufacture.
The second security device is a second guard 54 located under descent 38 of the Z0 bus and used to block a second possible access 56 under the descent 38.
The third device is a remote arm 58 with a vertical extension 60 towards the ground preventing a third access 62, arm which is connected to the front 22 of the right side 28 of the vehicle by a hinge 64, the hinge 64 being fixed to the bumper before 46 of bus 20.
In detail, the first panel guard 48..FIG.2 .., used to block access 50 under the vehicle by right side 28, is ~ 98937 consists of a fixed part 66..FIG.3..having a front 68..FIG.4..and a rear 70 and a movable part 72 ..FIG.5..has also a front 74 and a rear 76. Des eyelets 78..FIGS.4, 6 and 7 ..are previously fixed to the frame 80 of the bus on the right side 28 of the vehicle. Fasteners 82..FIGS.S, 6 and 7..are welded to the rear 70..FIG.4..from the fixed part 66 of the panel guard and are joined to the eyelets 78 by means of pins 84 or other easy connecting members and quick to dismantle which fixes the entire panel guard 48 to chassis 80 on the right side 28.
The fixed b3ti 66..FIG.3..of the panel guard 4B is manufactured aluminum tubes with rectangular cross section ..FIG.8A..with horizontal beams 86..FIG.3..and parts vertical 88. The fixed b3ti 66 is assembled in a two-way fashion rectangular areas 90 and q2. The vertical parts 88 of the front ~ 8 of the fixed b3ti 66 have openings or slots 94 ..FIG.8A..forming slides 96 located on each end and in the center of the fixed b ~ ti 66 and intended to receive casters 98. These 98 casters are rotatably mounted on a threaded rod mounted on the movable part 7Z of the panel guard. Mobile b3ti 72 is the same size and made with the same materials that the b3ti fixes 66 without however having slots. The b3ti mobile 72 is guided in its down and up movement by means of the casters 98..FIG.8 ~ ..inserted in the slides 96. The slots ~ 4 of the slides 96 are covered preferably a split rubber 100 to prevent dirt to infiltrate inside the slide 96 and hinder the good operation of the mechanism.
~ u high 102 of b ~ fixed ti 66..FIG.3..and centrally by in relation to each of zones 90 and 92, cylinders are installed at 209 ~ 37 double action 104 and 106 having an upper part 108..FIG.5 ..
and a lower part llO..FIG.4 ~ .. The jack 104 which has generally a 15 inch stroke is free in its part upper 108 and is ins ~ re in its lower part 110, that o ~ a rod 112 appears, in a binding 114 having a shape rounded 116. The fixing 114 ..FIG.5..is welded to the fixed b3ti bb of the panel guard 48 and similarly for the other cylinder 106 ..FIG.3 .. The rod 112..FIG.4 ~ A..is fixed to the top llB of the b3ti mobile 72 by welding or otherwise. When the driver operates the mechanism, the jacks 104 ... FIG. 3 .. and 106 start their stroke and set the moving b ~ ati 72 down q ~ i will come close the access 50..FIG.2..under the autobu6, on its right side 28 ..FIG.3 .. The stroke of cylinders 104 and 106 is adjustable according to the desired height and limited by a stop ~ 120..FIG.8..place in the slide 96. The panel guard can be installed a little more bottom than bottom 32..FIG.2..of the bus in order to leave only one opening o ~ access 50..FIG.3..maximum three inches between the bottom 122 of the movable b ~ ti 72 and the ground 52 when the movable part 72 is lowered. The actuating fluid of the cylinders is preferably the air drawn from an accumulator placed under the bus and united with the vehicle's existing pneumatic system but can also be ~
oil. Electric motors can also be used to move the moving parts of the safety devices by means, for example, a pinion mounted on a half-moon bottom llb and a rack arranged in the same axis as the cylinder rod.
A cushion protector lZ4..FIG.3..wraps the moving part 72 of the panel guard 48. The means of fixing the protector cushioned 124 to the movable frame 72 can be press buttons or Velcro or any other quick means of assembly and disassembly so that the cushion protector 124 can be easily removed 2 ~ 98937 mobile ~ 72 mobile for maintenance ~ cleaning or mechanical) DU vehicle of the guard in panel or to allow access to luggage bays locatedQ ~ at the bottom 32..FIG.l..on the right side ze including some models of buses from the American company Blue ~ ird are equipped.
Another guard 54..FIG.9..or guard-descent is installed at the bottom 126 of the descent 3Z where there is a second access 56 and includes a b ~ ti 128 having a right c ~ t ~ 130 (facing the drawing) and one side left 132, a protective net 134 and a hinge 136 .. FIG. ~ .. located between the step 40 of the descent 38 and the lowering guard 54. A double action pneumatic cylinder 138 comprising a rod 140 is fixed 139 50US the descent 38. The rod 140 of the cylinder 138 reioint the b ~ ti 128 of the lowering guard 54 in its left side 132 and this, two or three inches lower than the hinge 136. The axis of the rod 140 is placed at an angle with respect to on the left side 132 of the b ~ ti 128 to allow pivoting around the hinge 136. The pneumatic circuit used is the same as that of the panel guard and connects to an accumulator 142.
When the driver closes the pneumatic circuit, the rod Z0 140 of the jack 138 begins its stroke and pushes on the left side 132 of frame 128 of the lower guard 54 and rotates the entire keep 54 around the hinge 136 until it is in vertical position with respect to the ground 52 and that it blocks access 56 located under the descent 38 of the bus 20.
The third safety device consists of an arm 58..FIG.3..composed with a mobile frame 144..FIG.10 ..
