The invention also includes a method substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. The invention also includes apparatus substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roof of a building having a securing net attached thereto, Figure 2 is a detailed perspective view of a tensioning member of the securing net of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a side view of the tensioning member of Figure 2.
Referring to the Figures, a building shown generally at 10 has a roof 11 over which is located a securing net 12 made of nylon rope having a plastic coating thereon.
Tensioning members 13, located at each edge of the roof, apply tensioning forces to the net 12 in a first longitudinal direction parallel to the apex 14 of the roof 11 and then a second transverse direction, transverse to the apex 14 of the roof 11.
Figure 2 shows in more detail one of the tensioning members 13 which comprises an extruded plastic tube 15 held by a bracket 16, which bracket is secured to a splashboard 17. A plurality of brackets 16 support the tubes 15 at spaced apart locations around the edge of the roof. Each of the tubes 15 has a longitudinal slot 18 which receives an edge of the net 12. To apply tension to the net 12 the tube is turned axially which causes surplus net to wrap around the tube 15 until the net is taut.
Once the desired tension has been applied to the net 12 the tube 15 is fixed in position by screwing or pinning it to the bracket 16.
The net may be cut or pre-shaped to fit the contours of the roof and to fit around obstacles such as chimney stacks (not shown).
In the case of a pitched roof, such as is shown at 11 in the Figures, the strands of the net which extend longitudinally of the roof have a greater tension applied thereto than those which extend transversely of the roof.
If it is required to have any strands of the net which are not under tension, these strands can simply be formed into a loop at their ends, and passed around the tube.
The brackets 16 may be formed as part of a common member (not shown) which may extend along substantially the full length of the roof edge. The common member may have an integral rain-water trough or gutter (not shown).
Figure 4 shows an alternative arrangement for applying tension to the strands of the net. Steel brackets 18 are secured to the splashboard 17 of the roof 11 at spaced locations along substantially the full length of the roof 11. Each bracket 18 has a hole 19 through which a 3/8" diameter steel bar 20 is arranged to extend.
First portions 21 of wire approximately 15" long and 3mm in diameter are used to secure the strands 12 of the net to the bar 20. Each portion 21 of wire is formed at one end into a crimped loop 2la which extends around the bar 20. The other end 2lb of the wire 21 passes through a gripping device known as a "gripple". The nature of this device is such that a portion of wire may be inserted in one direction but may not be withdrawn in the opposite direction - ie. the wire is gripped.
Similarly second portions 22 of wire are formed with loops at one end 22a which loops are knotted to the strands 12 of the net. The other end 22b of wire 22 pass through another hole in the gripple in the opposite direction to that of portions 21 and are thereby gripped.
The net is placed into tension by pulling the portions of wire through the gripple in opposite directions.
The securing net advantageously inhibits damage caused to roofs due to high winds and storms. In particular it resists the inclination of roof tiles to flap and become damaged or dislodged due to the force of the wind. This lessens the likelihood of damage both to the roof itself and also to other property or persons due to flying detached roof debris.
Although the above apparatus has been described in connection with the securing of a roof of a building, it will be understood that it may equally be employed to secure other portions of a building.
