Abstract

An airline passenger support cushion 1 is an inflatable cushion with a shape such that it will fit snugly between the arms of a typical airliner seat 3 at the base of the back-rest and provide support for the occupant 2 such that their body is moved into a more restful straight-line position. The cushion is broadly triangular in shape when viewed from the side, with the angle between the base and the back matching those of a typical airliner seat base and backrest with the seat in the reclined position. The cushion may be inflated orally through a valve. <IMAGE>

Description

AIRLINE PASSENGER SUPPORT CUSHION This invention relates to a support cushion for the use of passengers flying in commercial transport aircraft (airliners).
Airliner seats, especially those in "economy" class, provide a compromise between comfort when in an upright position (fig 1), and in the reclined position (fig 2). The inevitable result of this compromise is a lack of comfort in the reclined position, brought about by the body position not being near enough to a straight lines or the horizontal.
The above problem is more acute on long haul airliners, with the passenger confined to his seat for longer periods of time. On these long haul flights the primary aim of the average passenger is to get adequate sleep, something which is often not possible in a normal seat due to lack of comfort.
Small, conventionally-shaped cushions are no.rmally provided by airlines, but these are of insufficient volume and incorrect shape to provide adequate comfort.
According to the present invention there is provided an inflatable support cushion of a size and shape such that it will fit snugly into the area at the base of a typical reclined airliner seat back between the arm rests, in such a manner that it will support the lower back area and move the body into more of a straight-line position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 3 shows a side view of a typical airliner seat 3 in the reclined position (arm rest omitted for clarity) with the support cushion 1 in position.
Figure 4 shows a general view of a typical support cushion with base 4, and back 5, in view.
Figure 5 shows another view of the above support cushion in its normal working position. The face of the cushion which the passenger normally rests against 6, is in view here.
The support cushion fits at the base of the back of a typical airliner seat in the reclined position, as shown in figure 3, and is shaped so that the body of the passenger is moved into more of a straight-line position shown by the body centreline 2. This is a position more conducive to sleep than that found with a standard seat, and the torso is in more of a horizontal position.
The support cushion is shaped so that the angles of the base 4, and back 5, match those of the seat, thus minimizing the tendency of the support cushion to move out of position.
The cushion is of inflatable construction similar to an airbed or inflatable beach-toy, and may be inflated orally via the valve 7 (fig 4). The cushion may thus be carried on or off of the aircraft and stored in a deflated condition, being inflated for use. Varying the amount of air pressure in the cushion will adjust the size and firmness of the cushion for optimum comfort.
Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of the support cushion.
It should be noted that although the support cushion is primarily designed for use on aircraft, it can also be of use on long distance buses, and other applications which use similar seats.

Claims (2)

1. An airline passenger support cushion comprising an inflatable support cushion of a size and shape such that it will fit snugly into the area at the base of a typical reclined airliner seat back between the arm rests, in such a manner that it will support the lower back area of the occupant and move their body into more of a straight-line position.
2. An airline passenger support cushion substantially as described herein with reference to figures 4, 5, and 6 of the accompanying drawings.
