Description
PACKAGING AND DISPENSING MULTI-PART COMPOSITIONS
This invention relates to the packaging of extrudable multi-part compositions, especially polymerforming, more especially polymer foam-forming, compositions and to means for dispensing the parts in a manner to minimise risk of contact by the user.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus for packaging and dispensing a fluid multi-part composition, comprising: a container having compartments for holding separately the reactive parts of the composition, and an outlet section for the compartments, each compartment being capable of accommodating a plunger actuable for movement within the compartment to dispense a composition part out through the outlet section; at least one collapsible sealed package for containing separately a reactive part and being dimensioned such that, when containing a reactive part, it is locatable within a compartment of the container and is capable of being collapsed within the compartment to dispense the reactive part out through the outlet section of the container; and piercing means locatable at the outlet section end of the container for piercing a collapsible package containing a composition reactive part within a compartment when a plunger is actuated to collapse the package and/or when a connection is applied to the outlet section for dispensing the composition.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus for packaging and dispensing a fluid multi-part composition, comprising: a container having compartments for holding separately the reactive parts of the composition, and an outlet section for the compartments, each compartment being capable of accommodating a plunger actuable for movement within the compartment to dispense a composition part out through the outlet section; at least one of the compartments holding a collapsible sealed package containing a reactive part, the package being capable of being collapsed within the compartment to dispense the reactive part out through the outlet section of the container; and piercing means located in the outlet section end of the container for piercing the collapsible package(s) within the compartment(s) when a plunger is actuated to collapse the package(s) and/or when a connection is applied to the outlet section for dispensing the composition.
The container may have co-axial or side-by-side tubular compartments.
Each compartment end may be closed with a removable cap until insertion of the plunger is required or it may be closed with a base section constituting a plunger.
The outlet section may be closed with a removable cap until dispensing is required and it may be adapted for connection to a delivery pipe and/or mixing means, for instance a static mixer, for the composition.
The collapsible package suitably should be one which is capable of being crushed in front of the plunger, in contrast to being introverted by the plunger, when the plunger is moved through the compartment. Accordingly the external diameter of the plunger, the internal diameter of the compartment and the flexibility of the package preferably should be such that the package always is substantially entirely in front of the plunger.
The collapsible package should be of sufficient strength that it does not burst during normal handling or dispensing (other than opening of the package caused by the piercing means) and suitably it is in the form of a crushable sachet. The package may be made of thin crushable sheet material such as plastics film, metallised plastics film or plastics-metal film laminate. A suitable sheet thickness for the package may be, for instance, up to about 250 microns. Examples of suitable materials are polyethylene film, polyethylene-polyester film laminate, plastics-metal plastics film laminate, for instance aluminium foil between a polyethylene film and a polyester film, and such films and film laminates which are surface-metallised.
The collapsible package may be made by edge-bonding film material, for instance by heat-sealing.
The outlet section of the container may be adapted to hold the piercing means in a position for piercing the package(s) and the piercing means preferably is locatable within the outlet section such that it does not pierce the package(s) until dispensing is required.
For a two-compartment container, the piercing means may comprise a substantially U-shaped device with sharp ends of the U, for instance a pronged clip, and may be locatable, for instance as a push-fit, on an appropriately shaped lug forming part of the outlet section.
After piercing of the package(s) the contents thereof are dispensed through the hole resulting from piercing and through the outlet section of the container, usually into a mixer such as a static mixer in the delivery pipeline, under the compressive force of the plunger. The initial hole may enlargen by splitting or stretching of the package material under the compressive force.
The packaging of the composition parts enables the container to be re-usable with fresh packages.
The invention is advantageous in the application of two-part polyurethane foam-forming compositions to produce foam seals in gas pipelines, including 'live' gas pipelines. For instance, it may be employed during installation of new pipeline sections to replace old sections, in the following manner.
A new pipeline section, which may be of plastics material, of smaller diameter than the old existing section (usually of steel) to be replaced, is inserted into the old section and connected up so that gas can flow along the new section and along the annular channel between the new and old sections. The foam-forming sealant composition is then passed into the annular space upstream of the admission point of the composition to form an annular seal. The old pipeline section may then be broken away downstream of the seal. The procedure may be repeated for adjoining or remote sections of the old pipeline. Branch or service pipes on the old section may be re-connected to the new section.
The foam seal produced in accordance with the invention is stable and is capable of withstanding gas pressures in pipelines and of absorbing shock and environmental movement of the pipeline without rupturing.
The invention may also be used advantageously for other applications, for instance for foam-sealing of other pipelines such as water and sewage pipes, and for producing foams for human orthotic and disability rehabilitation applications and for human comfort in distressing environments such as in a battlefield situation. The composition may be employed safely on site to produce re-usable, shaped, tough, lightweight foams to fit the contour of any portion of human anatomy requiring support.
By way of example, the invention is suitable for use with a fluid two-part polyurethane foam-forming composition wherein the viscosities of the parts are sufficiently similar to enable co-extrusion of the parts in the desired ratio from a dispensing means under a single applied extrusion force, and wherein one of the composition parts (A) comprises an organic polymer component having reactive hydroxyl groups, a cell-forming component, a catalyst and a polyisocyanate prepolymer, and the other part (B) comprises an organic polyisocyanate component.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, in which:

package prior to piercing, and
Figure 4 is a similar view to that of Figure

on the opposite end of the package.
The container shown in Figure 1 has two sideby-side substantially tubular compartments 1,2, each respectively having a closure cap in the shape of a plunger head 3,4 and holding a collapsible sealed package such as in the form of a crushable sachet 5,6 containing a reactive part of an extrudable two-part composition. In the cylindrical outlet section 7 of the container there is a two-pronged piercing means 8 located on a plate-like lug extension 9 of the divider 10 separating the compartments. The annular outer surface 11 of the outlet section may have a screw-thread formation for connection of the collar of a static head mixer.
Figures 2a and 2b show a piercing means such as that in Figure 1, having divergent plate-like prong leg portions 12,13 each terminating in a knife-edge point 14,15.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, a piercing means 16 of Figures 2a and 2b is located as a push-fit on a plate-like lug 17 in the twin-channel outlet section 18 of a side-by-side two-compartment container such that the end of one leg 19 of the piercing means extends into the outlet end space 20 of one of the compartments holding a crushable sealed sachet 21 containing one part of an extrudable two-part composition. On the other side of the lug 17, the other leg of the piercing means similarly extends into the outlet end space of the other compartment holding a crushable sealed sachet containing the other part of the composition. Following piercing of the sachets as shown in Figure 4, each composition part is forced out of the collapsing sachet through the pierced hole and passes through the outlet section on one side of the compartment divider, whereafter it is mixed with the other composition part in a mixer (not shown) connected to the outlet section.
