Abstract
Insulation boards for insertion between rafters include a plurality of slits 3, 4 which enable the board to be compressed so that it can be wedged between a pair of rafters. The slits are provided on opposed major faces of the board and are arranged so that with the exception of a list 3', 4' which occurs at an end of an array of slits, a slit is located midway between an opposed pair of slits. The board may also include flanges 2 which abut against the rafters when the board is inserted therebetween. The insulation board is manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS). <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVS IN AND RELATING TO INSULATION BOARDS FOR USE BETWEEN RAFTERS
The present invention relates to insulation boards for use between rafters.
Insulation boards placed between rafters have to fit snugly between the rafters if satisfactory insulation is to be achieved. Thus, the dimensions of known boards need to correspond very closely to the distance between the rafters. In practice, however, the distance between the rafters may not be constant. This means that the insulation board has to be cut to the required dimensions so that the board may tightly fit between the rafters.
This process requires that repeated measurements be taken of the distance between each subsequent pair of rafters.
Furthermore, it is extremely difficult and time-consuming to cut the board to the desired dimensions.
The present invention seeks to alleviate the disadvantages associated with the above.
The present invention accordingly provides an insulation board for use between rafters, the board being of a width which is greater than a nominal width, said board having a plurality of slits adapted to enable the board to be compressed so as to fit between the rafters and then to expand to provide effective insulation.
A plurality of slits is conveniently provided longitudinally on each opposed major face of the board.
With the exception of a slit occurring at an end of an array of slits, a slit provided on a major face of the board is located between a pair of slits on the opposite major face of the board and ideally such a slit is located midway between a pair of opposed slits.
Conveniently, the slits extend into the board by a distance which is greater than half of the thickness of the board.
The board can include flanges which are adapted to abut against the rafters when the board is compressed therebetween.
Preferably, the insulation board is manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS).
The invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, one embodiment of an insulation board according to the invention.

Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view along the line II-II of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the insulation board according to the invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, and includes flanges 2 which abut against rafters (not shown) when the board 1 is inserted therebetween. The insulation board 1 has a plurality of slits 3,31 on a major face 5 of the insulation board 1 and a plurality of slits 4,41 on the opposed major face 6. The width of the board 1 is the nominal width plus an additional width of approximately 10 mm; the nominal width being the width of a board which does not include slits, and which is required to fit between rafters a given distance apart. Each slit 3,31, 4,41 is 4mm wide and extends into the board by a distance which is greater than half of the thickness of the board. With the exception of the slits 31, 41 which occur at the ends of an array of slits, each slit 3,4 is located midway between a pair of opposed slits.
So that it can be inserted between the rafters (not shown), the insulation board 1 is compressed in the direction shown by the arrows A. Due to the plurality of slits 3,31, 4,41 little effort is needed to compress the insulation board 1.
The board 1 may therefore be inserted between rafters with the flanges 2 resting against adjacent rafters. When in place between the rafters, the insulation board 1 will tend to react against the compressive forces exerted by the rafters, and will tend to expand because of the inherent resiliency of expanded polystyrene (EPS). Thus, the insulation board 1 forms a tight seal with the rafters thereby providing efficient insulation.
Claims (7)
1. An insulation board for use between rafters, the board being of a width which is greater than a nominal width, said board having a plurality of slits adapted to enable the board to be compressed so as to fit between the rafters and then to expand to provide effective insulation.
2. An insulation board according to Claim 1 wherein a plurality of slits is provided longitudinally on each opposed major face of the board.
3. An insulation board according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein, with the exception of a slit occurring at an end of an array of slits, a slit provided on a major face of the board is located between a pair of slits on the opposite major face of the board.
4. An insulation board according to Claim 3 wherein a slit provided on a major face of the board is located midway between a pair of opposed slits.
5. An insulation board according to Claim 4 wherein the slits extend into the board by a distance which is greater than half of the thickness of the board.
6. An insulation board according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein the board includes flanges which are adapted to abut against the rafters when the board is compressed therebetween.
7. An insulation board substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
