Abstract
A liquid lining material for application to a surface for the subsequent application of wallpaper comprising an aqueous paste including adhesive and a filler and being of a consistency such as to cover defects in the surface. The adhesive is preferably a polyvinyl acetate or acrylic emulsion and the filler is preferably fibrous.
Description
Linings Material
The present invention is concerned with lining material for use in the application of wallpaper. When applying wallpaper a lining is often applied first in order to compensate for any unevenness in the underlying surface. The use of lining paper has several disadvantages.
In the first place, the application of lining paper takes considerable time. For instance, it may take eight or nine hours to cover 50 square metres.
Secondly, lining paper is usually of only one colour, namely white, and if dark wallpaper is used on top of this, any defects in the abutment of the wallpaper strips will show up. Thirdly, lining paper has only a limited effectiveness in counteracting unevenness or defects on the wall.
According to the invention there is provided a liquid lining material for application to a surface for the subsequent application of wallpaper, comprising an aqueous paste including adhesive and a filler and being of a consistency such as to cover defects in the surface.
Suitable proprDotions would be 40-60% water, 12-18% adhesive, 28-42% filler, preferably about 50%, 15% and 35% respectively.
The adhesive may be a normal wallpaper adhesive such as polyvinyl acetate emulsion or acrylic emulsion.
The filler may include any fibrous filler such as is commonly used in paper manufacture. For instance wood pulp, a combination of rag and wood pulp, or recycled paper may all be used. In addition the filler will usually include an inorganic particulate component such as china clay or chalk, the ratio of inorganic to fibrous filler being about 1:6.
The lining may be applied to the surface, which will usually be a wall, in any desired way such as by a brush, stipple brush or mohair roller.
The lining material may be capable of filling cracks in the wall in the manner of a conventional filler. If the defects in the wall are considerable a further application of the wallpaper lining liquid can be made to further smooth out the surface. Conventional lining paper cannot be used in this way.
Advantageously, the lining material may incorporate a colour or dye similar to that of the wallpaper to be applied. This dye can be added at the manufacturing stage or preferably on site.
The paste may also contain an additive which retards the drying process thereby allowing more time to apply the wallpaper to the wall surface which has been treated with the lining material,
For a better understanding of the invention a specific example will now be described.
A viscous liquid lining material was made comprising 50 % water, 15 % polyvinyl acetate adhesive, 30 % recycled paper pulp and 5% china clay filler, all percentages being by weight. The lining material could be applied to a wall to a thickness of about 1.6mm in one application and had a drying time of approximately 20 minutes, depending on conditions. By further application of lining material irregularities in the wall of a depth of about 3 mm could be filled.
