Description

2253735 VIDEO SIGNAL REPRODUCING APPARATUS The present invention relates
to video signal reproducing apparatus and a method of operating the same, and is concerned particularly although not 5 exclusively with digital still video cameras.
In a known digital still video camera, a video signal recording apparatus is used separately from a video signal reproducing apparatus. Namely, a digital video signal is recorded in a memory card after being photographed with the camera by the user, and is reproduced in the separate reproducing apparatus. Only by doing so, can the user see the photographed state of the object. However, when an alteration or mixture of the image data has been performed in the reproducing apparatus itself, the altered or mixed image data has to be re-recorded on the memory card in order to conserve the image data. However, it is impossible to re- record it since the conventional reproducing apparatus does not have a re- recording function.
According to an ordinary video signal reproducer for a digital still video camera, shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, a video signal recorded on a memory card 20 is reproduced in accordance with a control signal from a system controller 10, and transmitted to a buffer memory 30. Buffer memory 30 stores the input video signal temporarily, and then transmits it to digital-to-analog (I)/A) converter 40 which converts the received video signal to an analog signal. Buffer memory 3.0 also is controlled by system controller 10.
Thereafter, the analog-converted video signal is sent to a display unit 50 where it is displayed, and playback is complete.
In such video signal reproducers, newly produced video signals which are altered - for example, by a multi-picture or picture-mixture function, etc. - can be displayed. However, it is very difficult to re-record the altered or mixed video signal on the memory card for conserving the newly produced 5 picture, since there is no re-recording function in the above reproducers.
1 Preferred embodiments of the present invention aim to provide a video signal reproducing apparatus and method which can re-record on a memory card a video signal produced by altering the video signal reproduced from the memory card of a digital still video camera, or by mixing that video signal with another signal.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a video signal reproducing apparatus having a re-recording function comprising:
a system controller which performs an internally stored program, and then generates and outputs a plurality of control signals; an address controller which generates and outputs an address control signal according to one of the control signals output from said system controller; memory means for reproducing as a digital output signal a previously recorded digital video signal as it is, or otherwise one or more mixed and/or altered previously recorded digital video signal, according to control signals output from said address controller and said system controller; a digital-to-analog signal converter for converting the digital output signal reproduced from said mem ory means into an analog video signal; a display unit for displaying the analog-converted video signal from 5 said digital-to-analog signal converter; and a re-recording processor for selectively re-recording in said memory means the digital output signal from said memory means.
Preferably, said memory means comprises a memory card for reproducing previously recorded digital video signals by altering or mixing the digital video signals under control of said system controller and said address controller, or for storing such altered or mixed digital video signal in a designated address via said re-recording processor, and a buffer memory for temporarily storing and outputting the digital video signal reproduced from said memory card under control of said system controller.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a video signal rerecording and reproducing method comprising the steps of.
checking by a system controller whether or not it is necessary to rerecord a currently displayed video signal, completing an operation if rerecording is not necessary and detecting if a frame pulse input to said system controller is at a first level if re-recording is necessary; supplying a re-record control enable signal to a re-recording processor by said system controller when the frame pulse is a pulse having said first level; designating a picture in a memory means in which the digital video signal supplied from said re-recording processor is stored according to the rerecord control enable signal; supplying a record control signal from said system controller to said memory means according to the picture designation; recording the digital video signal in said memory means according to the record control signal; detecting if the frame pulse input to said system controller is at a second level after recording the digital video signal, and supplying a re- record control disable signal to said re-recording processor when the frame pulse is a pulse having the second level; supplying a control signal from said system controller to an address controller to supply an address signal of a desired picture to said memory means and, at the same time, supplying a read control signal from said system controller to said memory means; and reading out the digital video signal of the address according to the read control signal.
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a video signal reproducing apparatus comprising storing means for storing a digital video signal; means for reproducing a digital video signal from said storing means; editing means for optionally editing one or more digital video signal from said storing means; and means for optionally recording into said storing means one or more digital video signal edited by said editing means.
Such an apparatus may further comprise any one or more of the features disclosed in the accompanying specification, claims, abstract and/or drawings, in any combination.
The invention extends to a digital video camera adapted to store and reproduce still video images, the camera including apparatus, or being adapted to operate in accordance with a method, according to any of the preceding aspects of the invention.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to Figures 2 to 5 of the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 2 is a block diagram of one example of a video signal reproducing apparatus having a re-recording function, according to the present invention; Figure 3 is a flowchart diagram of one example of a video signal rerecording and reproducing method for a video signal reproducing apparatus having a re-recording function according to the present invention; Figure 4 illustrates an example of memory addresses adopted in a video signal reproducing apparatus having a re-recording function, as shown in Figure 2; and Figures SA through 5E are examples of operational timing diagrams of the apparatus for reproducing a video signal having a re-recording function, as shown in Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 2, a system controller 10 outputs control signals produced after performing an internally stored program. Address controller transmits an address control signal to memory card 20 according to system controller 10. Memory card 20 receives a control signal transmitted from system controller 10 and reproduces a previously recorded video signal by altering or mixing it with other signals according to the address control signal from address controller 70. Buffer memory 30 temporarily stores a video signal transmitted from memory card 20. D/A converter 40 converts the digital video signal transmitted from buffer memory 30 to an analog video signal. Display unit 50 displays the video signal converted to an analog signal in D/A converter 40. Re-recording processor 60 re-records the digital video signal output from buffer memory 30 in memory card 20.
A description of an example of operation of the illustrated apparatus now follows with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, data of video signal output from memory card 20 according to a read control signal from system controller 10 is temporarily stored in buffer memory 30, and is transmitted to display 50 via D/A converter 40. The data of video signal to be transmitted from buffer memory 30 to D/A converter 40 is also transmitted to re-recording processor 60. At this time, in order to display a multi-picture or a mixed picture on display 50, the user operates a device (not shown) to read out the desired pictures from memory card 20, and after altering or mixing of the pictures, the data is supplied to buffer memory 30. System controller 10 performs the internally stored program to detect in step 1 whether or not to re- record video signal data altered by the user.
If the video signal data re-record in memory card 20 was not required in step 1, the sequence of steps shown in Figure 3 ends and system controller 10 instructs re-recording processor 60 to stop operating. Conversely, if rerecording was required, system controller 10 then checks in step 2 the logic level of a frame pulse having a waveform as shown in Figure 5A, which is transmitted to system controller 10 from the external source.
In step 3, if the logic level of frame pulse transmitted to memory card 20 in step 2 is "HIGH", system controller 10 will continue checking the logic level of frame pulse until it goes "LOW". If the logic level of the frame pulse is "LOW", system controller 10 applies a "LOW" logic level rerecording control signal shown in Figure 5B to re-recording processor 60.
In order to record the desired, altered video signal data in memory card 20, it is checked whether or not a user designated picture (for example, picture 1, picture 2, etc.) as shown in Figure 4 is selected in step 4.
If a picture has not been selected, the program waits for a selection. When the picture is selected, address controller 70 under the control of system controller 10 sets upper four picture-designating bits (A7,A6,A5, A4) in step 5. For instance, in Figure 4 where the video signal data from buffer memory 30 is recorded in the first picture address of memory card 20, the picturedesignating four bits (A7,A6,A5,A4) are set to TOOT. When the video signal data is recorded in the ninth picture address, the picture- designating four bits (A7,A6,A5,A4) are set to " 100T. At the same time, an image data address is set with hexadecimal code lower four bits (AO to A3; BO to B15). Figures 5D and 5E illustrate the waveforms of certain data and addresses.
In step 6, system controller 10 applies "LOW" logic level signal (recording signal) having a waveform as shown in Figure 5C to a read/w r i t e port R/W of memory card 20 so as to record the altered video signal output from re-recording processor 60 in one picture screen memory area of memory card 20.
In order to reproduce such recorded video signals, the illustrated reproducing apparatus is converted from re-recording mode into reproduction mode. For this operation, system controller 10 checks the logic level of the frame pulse transmitted thereto in step 7.
If logic level of the frame pulse is "LOW", its logic level will continue to be checked until it goes "HIGH". If the logic level of the frame pulse is "HIGE', system controller 10 applies the re-record control signal of logic "HIGH" to re-recording processor 60 in step 8. After performing step 8, system controller 10 applies a logic level "HIGH" signal (read signal) having a waveform shown in Figure 5C to read/w r i t J(R/W) port of memory card 20, so as to reproduce the data of the specific picture memory region in memory card 20. The data reproduced from memory card 20 is subsequently input to display unit 50 via buffer memory 30 and D/A converter 40 so that the altered picture such as a multi-picture or a mixed picture can be displayed.
As described above in detaiL the illustrated video reproducing apparatus having a re-recording function and the method thereof are advantageous in preserving functional pictures by re-recording video signal data of a functional picture such as a multi-picture and a mixed picture in a memory card employed in a digital still video camera.
