Description

Title: WALL-PAPER PASTING MOHINID Description of Invention According to a first aspect of the invention I provide a device for applying fluid or other substance to at least one surface of a length of sheet material, the device comprising an applicator from which fluid or other substance may be transferred to said at least one surface and advancing means for advancing sheet material relative to the applicator such that at least said one surface contacts the applicator.
The applicator may be a cylindrical roller mounted on mounting means for rotation about a longitudinal axis of the applicator and preferably on a curved surface of the applicator, there is provided a pile fabric which facilitates uptake of fluid thereonto and delivery of fluid therefrom.
The advancing means may comprise a material having a high coefficient of friction relative to the sheet material advanced.
The advancing means preferably comprises a cylindrical roller which is mounted for rotation on the mounting means about a longitudinal axis of the advancing means, the material having a high coefficient of friction being provided on a curved surface of the roller such that rotation of the advancing means will advance sheet material which is in contact therewith in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the advancing means.
The longitudinal axes of the advancing means and of the applicator may extend parallel to one another and the curved surfaces thereof may lie adjacent to one another and/or in contact with one another such that sheet material which is passed therebetween is engaged by the advancing means and advanced thereby and such that at least said one surface engages the applicator.
The advancing means may be operatively connected to drive means by which motion may be imparted to the advancing means to move it.
The device further may include any one or more of the following: engageriient means for maintaining sheet material in contact with the applicator over at least a part of the surface of the applicator, sheet material removing means for assisting removal of sheet material from the applicator, and fluid transfer means by which fluid may be transferred from a reservoir thereof to the applicator.
The engagement means may comprise another cylindrical roller which is mounted for rotation on the mounting means, a longitudinal axis of which extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the applicator.
The engagement means also may be mounted for movement in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis thereof such that the distance between the longitudinal axes of the applicator and of the engagement means is variable by actuation of adjustment means which is operatively connected with the engagement means.
The sheet removing means may comprise a comb, teeth of which extend tangentially or substantially tangentially to the curved surface of the applicator, and the extremities of which lie adjacent to or are in contact with said curved surface, so that a leading edge of sheet material is thereby disengaged from the applicator and is advanced over said comb.
The fluid transfer means may comprise still another cylindrical roller which is mounted for rotation on the mounting means, a longitudinal axis of which extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the applicator and a curved surface of which contacts or lies adjacent to the curved surface of the applicator such that fluid may be transferred therebetween.
The device further may include a reservoir for fluid and preferably the reservoir comprises a tank on or in which the mounting means stands such that a part of the curved surface of the fluid transfer means is proximal to a base of the tank.
The device further may include a guide member by which advance of sheet material is guided.
The device may be a device for applying fluid to one side only of sheet material. For example the sheet material may be wallpaper and the device may be a device for applying paste to the wallpaper.
According to a second aspect of the invention I provide a method of applying a fluid or other substance to sheet material comprising the steps of: feeding sheet material onto a device according to any one of the preceding statements, introducing fluid or other substance into a reservoir therefor, and actuating the advancing means to advance the sheet material relative to the device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described which relates specifically to the application of adhesive to wallpaper.
The wallpaper pasting machine is a new invention, easy to use, minimal effort, faster work, accurate and minimal space is needed. No pasting table and no mess. It operates manually as well as automatically.
Less than a minute is required to paste a roll.
Measurements: Weight 4.5kg.
Dimensions: 23" long X 10" high X 4.5" wide Paste tank = 24" X 5.5" X 4.0" Structure The machine is composed principally of four rollers of different sizes, as you see in Figures 1 and 2.
(1) The pasting roller: Made of wood and covered by a fluffy material such as a piece of carpet. The total diameter is 5.0" and 21.0" long. A turning handle or a motor can be attached to run the machine. This and the other rollers are held by two panels of wood, each is 10" X 4.5" with three hole cases in each panel to facilitate their turning movement. Two holes are round and one is slit-iike.
(2) Figures 1 and 2, Advancing roller: It is made of wood, and measures 3.0" diameter and 21.0" long. Due to a slit-like hole case, it is liable for up and down movements in addition to turning round by the effect of the roller (1) underneath. To hold it in upward position, a spring and a lever (7) is attached to its axis. The upward position is used when the machine is not in use. The effect of the up and down movement is to facilitate cleaning from the paste before and after use, and also to allow a constant pressure on all kinds of wallpapers and to give an even layer of paste on the surface. It also protects the concave patterns on some kinds of wallpapers not to be flattened.
(3) Figure 1 Smaller advance roller: Made of wood and covered by a sheet of rubber. It's rubber surface is lightly touching the pasting roller (1), which is turning the former round on operation. The starting point of pasting is immediately under this roller (3). Diameter 1.0" and length 21.0".
(4) Figures 1 and 2: A wooden roller slimmer than (1) and (2) and it measures 2.0" diameter and 21.0" long. This roller serves to dispense the last drop of paste in the base of the paste tank Figure 4, to the pasting roller (1). Preferably covered with carpet sheet similar to roller (1).
(S) Figures 1 and 2: Turning handle to turn the pasting roller (1) and subsequently the other three rollers. The handle can be replaced by a slow motor for mechanical version.
(6) Figures 1 and 2: Carrying handle. To lift up the machine for all purposes.
(7) Figures 1 and 2: Lifting lever: To raise roller (2) for cleaning as stated before.
(8) Figure 2: Detachment bar: This bar is fixed on the posterior aspect of the machine. It is a comb-like device with curved inverted "U"-shaped teeth, lightly touching the surface of the pasting roller (1). This device detaches the pasted wallpaper from the surface of the roller, otherwise, the paper will stick to the roller and return back to the pasting-tank unless detached by hand at that point.
(9) Figure 2: Square metal bar, under which the pasted paper emerges. Its advantage is firstly to strengthen the machine and secondly to stop lifting the advancing roller (2) and loosing the proper pasting if a pull on the wallpaper is exerted, especially if a single person is operating the machine manually.
Operation 1. Mix a suitable amount of paste with water as recommended by the manufacturers of the paste, in a bucket. Empty the paste in the pastetank (Figure 4), and stand the wallpaper pasting machine in the tank.
2. Turn the pasting roller (1) by moving the handle or switching on the motor for a few turns, which roller (2) is in upward position.
3. Stop turning, lower roller (2) by releasing lever (7) and stick the edge of the wallpaper in the space between rollers (1) and (3) or stick the first two inches of the wallpaper to the pasted surface of roller (1) immediately under roller (3).
4. Rollers (2) and (3) should be cleaned by a damp clean cloth if previously used.
5. Turn the pasting-roller (1) clockwise to advance the wallpaper, using the handle or switch on the motor.
6. Deliver the edge of the wallpaper from the other side of the machine and pull on if a single person operating the machine manually.
If a second person is available, it is preferable to turn the handle continuously until the whole length is pasted. Less than half a minute is required. If a motor is fixed, just deliver the paper edge and hold it up until the whole length is out. The paper is now well pasted and ready to be hanged.
Cleaning By the end of the working day lift up the machine, empty the tank from remaining paste and wash the tank with tap water. Fill the tank with water, put the machine back in the tank and run it for half a minute.
Empty the water and store.
Addendum Fig. 3 is a cross section which also demonstrates the passage way of the wall-paper,l0. The reference numbers are corresponding with those in Fig. i & .
Fig.4 is merely a paste-tank, with a shape and dimensions to fit the pasting-machine.
