Abstract
A gauge for measuring the gap between the door 31 and flange formation 30 defining the door opening of a vehicle has a pair of grips 10 adapted to be clamped to the flange formation 30, a pointer 35 pivotally mounted to one arm 11 of the grips, the pointer having a nose portion 37 on one side of its pivot 36 which when the grips are clamped to the flange formation 30 will be disposed in the gap between the door 31 and flange formation 30 and engage the door, a scale 39 being provided on the arm 11 adjacent the other end of the pointer to provide an indication of the width of the gap. <IMAGE>
Description
GAUGES
The present invention relates to a gauge and in particular to a gauge for measuring the clearance around the door of a vehicle.
When fitting the doors of a vehicle, a gap around the door, which is closed by a rubber seal, must be within tolerance limitations in order to ensure that there is sufficient clearance to prevent the door slamming against the body of the vehicle while at the same time ensuring that the seal does not leak.
The present invention provides a gauge that will give an instant, accurate indication of the seal gap so that the gap can be adjusted to provide the appropriate clearance.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a gauge for measuring the gap between the door and door opening of a vehicle comprises a pair of grips adapted to be clamped to a flange formation defining the door opening, a pointer being mounted by means of a pivot to one arm of the grips, the pointer having a nose portion on one side of the pivot which when the grips are clamped to the flange formation will be disposed in the gap between the door and the door opening and engage the door, and a- scale being provided on said one arm adjacent the other end of the pointer to provide an indication of the width of the gap.
An embodiment of the invention is now described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a gauge in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a view along the line II-II.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a gauge comprises a pair of adjustable grips 10 of known design.
The grips 10 comprise an arm 11 having a jaw 12 formed at one end. A link 13 is pivotally mounted to arm 11 adjacent the end thereof to which jaw 12 is attached. A second jaw 14 is attached to the link 13 so that pivoting of the link 13 relative to the arm 11 will open and close the jaws 12 and 14. The link 13 is pivoted to arm 11 by means of pivot 16 which is locatable in one of a series of slots 17, the slots 17 being interconnected so that the pivot 16 may be moved from one slot 17 to another, to adjust the closed width of the jaws 12 and 14,
An operating lever 20 is pivotally attached at one end to link 13 by means of pivot 21, pivot 21 being separated from pivot 16.A second link 22 is connected at one end to lever 20 intermediate of its ends by means of pivot 23 and at the other end to the arm 11 adjacent the end thereof remote from jaw 12, by pivot 24. Movement of the lever 20 towards arm 11 will thus cause the link 13 to pivot about pivot 16 closing the jaws 12 and 14, while pivoting of the lever 20 away from the arm 11 will open jaws 12 and 14. In the closed position, the pivots 21, 23 and 24 will form a geometric lock, so that the jaws 12 and 14 may be clamped together about the flange 30 defining the door opening of a motor vehicle until lever 20 is pushed away from the.arm 11 to release the jaws 12 and 14.
A pointer 35 is pivotally attached to the jaw 12 by means of a bracket 36, so that the nose 37 at one end of the pointer 35 extends on one side of the pivot towards the free end of jaw 12. The other end 38 of the pointer 35 is forked, separate limbs of the pointer extending on either side of a scale 39 which is secured to the arm 11. The scale 39 is calibrated to provide a measurement of the gap between the flange 30 defining the door opening and door 31 of a vehicle.
In use, the gauge is clamped by means of jaws 12 and 14 to the flange 30 defining the door opening, so that the gauge is located on the inside of the door 31. The door 31 is then closed so that it engages the nose 37 of pointer 35 and the end 38 of pointer 35 will indicate the separation between the flange 30 and door 31 on the scale 39.
Claims (4)
1. A gauge for measuring the gap between the door and door opening of a vehicle comprising a pair of grips adapted to be clamped to a flange formation defining the door opening, a pointer being mounted by means of a pivot to one arm of the grips, the pointer having a nose portion on one side of the pivot which when the grips are clamped to the flange formation will be disposed in the gap between the door and the door opening and engage the door, and a scale being provided on said one arm adjacent the other end of the pointer to provide an indication of the width of the gap.
2. A gauge according to Claim 1 in which the grips have a pair of jaws, the separation of the jaws, when the grips are closed, being adjustable.
3. A gauge according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the pointer is forked, separate limbs of the pointer extending on either side df the scale.
4. A gauge substantially as described herein, with reference to, and as shown in, Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
