Description

DOMESTIC APPLIANCE The invention relates to a domestic appliance.
A domestic appliance has been proposed which comprises a housing built up from a motor housing portion in which an electric motor is accommodated and from a base on which a bowl can be placed next to the motor housing. In the bowl a tool can be driven by the electric motor so as to rotate. A lid may be placed on the bowland locked thereto before the appliance is started. The lid lock is coupled to a control switch, whereby the drive of the tool can take place only while the lid is locked, that is the lid cannot be taken from the bowl when the control switch is in its on position, and the control switch cannot be moved from its off position when the lid is removed.
The lid lock is provided with a locking lever having its fulcrum in the appliance, one end of said lever co-operating with a raised tag provided at the lid and the other end co-operating with a locking element coupled to the control switch in such a way that the drive can only be operated by means of the control switch after the locking lever has been rotated as a result of closing the lid.
A domestic appliance with such a safety system is known from EP-B-O 081 874. In such domestic appliances, the motor housing is subjected to a bending load by the forces occurring when the appliance is operating in such a way that the motor housing and the bowl can be pressed away from one another to a certain degree. In the appliance according to EP-B-O 081 874, a forked lever is used for the safety system, which lever cooperates with a raised pin (tag) of the lid. When the forces exerted on the motor housing become very great during operation, it is possible for the raised pin (tag) to be moved out of engagement with the lever owing to the increased distance between the bowl and the motor housing, so that the lid can be turned back and taken off while the tool is rotating. To prevent this, the plastic housing of the appliance according to EP-B-O 081 874 is in practice rigidly constructed, while in addition the lever is made of metal. The relevant parts of the appliance must, however, be constructed to a high tolerance.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a domestic appliance comprising a housing accommodating a motor for driving a tool received within a vessel supported by a base provided by the housing, a lid for closing the vessel and a safety mechanism for preventing operation of the motor by movement of a switch actuating member from a first to a second position unless the lid is correctly positioned on the vessel, the safety mechanism comprising a lever pivotally mounted to the housing so as to be pivotable in a direction transverse to that in which the lid is movable so as to be correctly positioned on the vessel, the lever and a locking element carried by the switch actuating member each being provided with a respective one of a locking opening and a locking pin for cooperating with the locking opening to prevent operation of the motor by the switch actuating member, the switch actuating member having an aperture through which a portion of the lid can pass only when the switch actuating member is in the first position to enable the lever to be pivoted by the portion of the lid so as to free the locking pin from the locking opening and so release the switch actuating member to allow operation of the motor.
The present invention also provides a domestic appliance comprising a housing built up from a motor housing portion in which an electric motor is accommodated and from a base on which a bowl can be placed next to the motor housing, in which bowl a tool can be driven by the electric motor so as to rotate, and comprising a lid which can be placed on the bowl and can be locked thereto before the appliance is started, which lid lock is coupled to a control switch, whereby the drive of the tool can take place exclusively while the lid is locked, the lid cannot be taken from the bowl when the control switch is in its on position, and the control switch cannot be moved from its off position when the lid is removed, and which lid lock is provided with a locking lever having its rotation bearings in the appliance, one end of said lever cooperating with a raised tag provided at the lid and the other end cooperating with a locking element coupled to the control switch in such a way that the drive can only be operated by means of the control switch after the locking lever has been rotated as a result of closing of the lid, in which appliance the locking lever is rotatable about a horizontal spindle, the locking element of the switch has locking opening which cooperates with a locking pin provided at the locking lever, and the control switch is a lid-shaped body with a circumferential rim which points downwards and which is provided with a recess through which the tag of the lid can be moved exclusively in the off position of the control switch.
The present invention further provides a domestic appliance comprising a housing accommodating a motor for driving a tool received within a vessel supported by a base provided by the housing, a lid for closing the vessel and a safety mechanism for preventing operation of the motor unless the lid is correctly positioned, the safety mechanism comprising a switch for operating the motor, a locking lever which is rotatable about a spindle and which may assume at least a first state and a second state, the lever comprising a first part for cooperating with a portion of the lid such that in the presence of the lid, the lever assumes the first state and in the absence of the lid the lever assumes the second state, the lever further comprising a second part for communicating with a switch actuating member to inhibit movement of that member when the lever is in the second state, the switch actuating member including means for cooperating with the switch for operating the motor and also including means for preventing substantial movement of the lid when the motor is operating.
As a result, the appliance is less sensitive as regards tolerances, so that it can be manufactured at a lower cost.
The invention will now be explained with reference, by way of example, to an embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a domestic appliance in which the invention is used, Figure 2 is a partial plan view of the appliance shown in Figure 1 with the control switch removed but its location shown in dashed lines, and Figure 3 shows an exploded perspective view of the appliance of Figure 1 with the tool omitted.
The domestic appliance shown in the Figures comprises a housing 1 built up from a motor housing portion la in which an electric motor 4 is accommodated and from a base ib on which a bowl 2 is arranged to be placed next to the motor housing la and in which a tool 3 is drivable by the electric motor 4. The bowl 2 can be closed with a lid 5 which can be locked to the bowl, for example, by means of a bayonet lock. The motor can be switched on with a control switch 6. This control switch is situated on the motor housing la above the motor, approximately at the level of the lid 5. The control switch has the shape of a lid with a circumferential rim pointing downwards in which a recess 7 is provided whose purpose will be explained below.
The lid lock is coupled to the control switch 6 in the manner described below: On the housing 1 below the control switch 6 there is a motor switch 8 of which a knob 9 can be moved in the direction of the arrow 10 for switching the motor off and on (possibly in several positions). The control switch 6 is rotatable by means of a pin 11 in a bush 12 of the housing. The control switch is provided on its underside with an annular portion 13 in which the knob 9 of the motor switch 8 fits. When the control switch is rotated, the knob 9 of the motor switch moves along with it.
Additionally, on the housing 1 below the control switch 6, a locking lever 15 is provided which is rotatable about a horizontal spindle 16. This lever 15 is pressed down by a spring-loaded element 17. One end 18 of the locking lever 15 is arranged to cooperate with a raised tag 19 of the bowl lid 5.
The other end 20 of the lever 15, situated on the other side of the spindle 16, is provided with a catch 21 for cooperation with the control switch 6. For this purpose, the underside of the control switch 6 is provided with a locking element 22 with a locking opening 23.
The operation of the safety mechanism is as follows: In the position shown in Figure 2, the catch 21 is in the locking opening 23, so that the control switch 6 is locked against rotation relative to the motor housing portion la. Upon locking of the lid 5 on the bowl 4, the raised tag 19 is moved by the rotation of the lid through the recess 7 of the control switch 6 and passes below the said one end 18 of the locking lever 15.
The end 18 has at its lower side a sloping contact surface (not visible in the Figure) so that said end is pressed up by the tag 19 and the locking lever 15 starts to rotate about its spindle 16. As a result, the other end of the lever carrying the catch 21 goes down and leaves the locking opening 23 of the control switch 6. The control switch 6 is thus released and can be rotated about its spindle or pin 11 in order to operate the motor switch 8 to switch the motor on. When the control switch 6 is released by the downward movement of the catch 21, the tag 19 of the lid is entirely below the control switch. When the control switch is rotated to operate the motor switch 8 to switch the motor 4 on, the recess 7 rotates along with it, so that, if an attempt is now made to rotate the lid 5 back towards its release position, the raised tag 19 will abut the inside of the rim of the control switch 6, thus preventing the lid release. The lid 5, therefore, cannot be removed from the bowl 2 while the motor 4 is switched on. The recess 7 only assumes a position such that the raised tag 19 of the lid 5 can pass through it after the control switch 6 has been returned to the off position.
From reading the present disclosure, other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art.
