Description

A DISPLAY KIT The invention relates to a display kit and particularly though not exclusively to a display kit for use as point of sale material in shops.
Displays are. often used in shops, for example, and may be used to identify products or show prices. Often many different products are displayed at different prices and it may be undesirably expensive to have identifying displays particular to each product and incorporating a price while if such information is handwritten, it may look untidy or unprofessional.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a display kit comprising a display surface and applying means for applying paint or ink to the display surface, the display surface having writing thereon comprising a plurality of alternatives and the kit being such that the writing on the display surface is arranged to be painted or inked over using the applying means so that one or certain of the alternatives are emphasised.
In this way, the names of different products, for example, or details of variations on the same product can be provided on the display surface and parts of a display surface can be painted or inked over to leave the appropriate name and/or description prominently displayed. As the writing can be printed, it can be presented in an attractive and clearly legible way.
The or at least two of the alternatives may be opposites.
The alternatives may be distinguished from the background on which they are printed in any suitable way and at least one of the alternatives may be written in a lighter colour than its background. At least one of the alternatives may be written in a box on a background, the alternative and the background being the same colour. In that case, said at least one alternative is preferably written in a darker colour than its background.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a kit comprising a display surface and applying means for applying paint or ink to the display surface, the display surface including at least one character thereon, the or each character being in the shape of a figure of eight, such that parts of the or each character can be painted or inked over using the applying means so that parts of the each or each character are emphasised and the or each character as a result is seen as a letter or number other than eight.
While the invention in this aspect is useful for displaying either letters or numbers, it is of particular use in displaying numbers, such as prices.
The or each character may take any suitable form but conveniently is in substantially the form of a parallelogram having a transverse line across it. The or each character may be made up from a plurality of separate segments.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a kit comprising a device including a display surface and applying means for applying paint or ink to the display surface, the display surface including at least one character thereon, the or each character being made up from a plurality of separate segments such that one or more segments of the or each character can be painted or inked over using the applying means so that one or more segments are emphasised and the or each character as a result can be seen as a letter or numeral, the or each character being capable of representing at least two different letters or numerals.
By the use of separate segments, if part of a character is untidily painted or inked over, this will not affect the appearance of the resulting letter or numeral, unless the paint or ink is so untidily applied as to encroach on another segment. Thus, less care is needed in preparing the characters and the edges of characters may be neat and accurate.
The segments may be arranged in any suitable array, but preferably are arranged in a figure of eight. The figure of eight may be in the form of a parallelogram including a transverse line. Preferably, there are breaks between segments at the lower left and right corners and upper left and right corners of the parallelogram, at each end of the transverse line and in the two sides of the parallelogram adjacent the ends of the transverse line.
Preferably each character thus comprises seven segments, although more segments may be provided if desired.
In each case, the applying means may be any suitable device or implement such as a brush or a pen.
Conveniently the applying means is a marker pen.
The display surface may be provided on a support.
The support may be arranged to support the display surface at an angle of between about 900 and 1200 to the horizontal. In one embodiment, the support includes a member extending rearwardly from or adjacent an upper edge of the display surface.
The member preferably extends at between 210 and 300 and most preferably extends at about 240 to the plane of viewing of the display surface. The member may include a weight, in particular where the member extends at less than 270 from the display surface. Alternatively or in addition, the member may include a magnet which is preferably on its underside so that the support can be mounted, for example, on a metal shelf. To display surface will then be supported at a suitable angle for viewing.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a display device comprising a display surface and a member extending rearwardly therefrom, the member including a downwardly facing magent.
The member may take any suitable form and may comprise a sheet. In that case the magnet may comprise a flat magnetic strip.
Viewing the invention from another aspect, the support may be arranged to stand on a surface, for example, but conveniently includes attachment means for attaching it to another body. The attachment means may take any suitable form and may comprise a magnet. The attracting surface of the magnet is preferably provided in a different plane to the plane of viewing of the display surface and suitably is provided at an angle of between 2106 and 300" to the plane of viewing of the display surface. In this way, the support can be magnetically attached to, for example a horizontal metal shelf and will be displayed at a suitable angle for viewing. The magnet preferably comprises a strip of magnetic material.
In another embodiment, the support preferably includes laterally extending engaging elements. The elements may extend at the same level. In this way, the display surface may be supported between two bodies which may be constituted by opposite parts of the upper rim of a golf bag such that the support sits in the golf bag with the elements supporting it on the golf bag rim. The elements may be any suitable shape and in a preferred embodiment the elements together are in the shape of a disc.
The display surface may be a surface of the support, but preferably the display surface is on a member which is removably mounted on the support. The member may take any suitable form but preferably is a card. The member may be mountable in a channel of the support which is arranged to support one edge of the member. Preferably, the member is mountable in a sleeve of the support which includes a transparent window portion for viewing of the entire display surface. The sleeve may comprise a transparent front sheet attached along opposite edges to a back part of the support.
According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a display surface for use in a kit according to any of the first three aspects of the invention and including any or none of the subfeatures relating thereto.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of the support of the first embodiment, part assembled; Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the assembled support of the first embodiment and cards; Fig. 3 is a rear perspective view of the support of the first embodiment; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the first embodiment mounted on a shelf; Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the cards of the first embodiment; Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the second embodiment; and Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the second embodiment.
Fig. 1 shows the unassembled support 10 of the first embodiment. This comprises two integral sheets 12, 13 at an angle of about 1200 to one another edge to edge. The support also includes transparent covers, 14,15 which are arranged one above the other on the lower sheet 12 in the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The upper and lower edges of the covers 14,15 are folded over and glued to the lower sheet 12 to provide sleeves 19,20.
Thumb cut-outs 16 are provided in the lower sheet 12 in positions corresponding to the ends of the covers 14,15.
The covers 14,15 when mounted on the lower sheet 12 receive cards 17,18 in the sleeves formed therebetween.
The upper sleeve 19 receives two cards 17 which may be inserted from each end of the sleeve 19 as shown in Fig.
2. The lower sleeve 14 receives a single larger card 18.
Each card 17,18 may include any suitable information, such as, for example, the name of a manufacturer, the type of product, or its price.
Fig. 4 shows an example card 18 which is intended to be used in the display at point of sale for golf clubs. At the left of the card 18, seven substantially equally sized segments 21 are arranged in a figure of eight 22 which is represented in the same form as such a figure on, for example, an LCD calculator display. That character 22 is followed by the word "irons" which is followed by a "" and three further characters 23 identical to the first 22 and separated by a hyphen from two further identical characters 24. At the right hand end of the card 18 are three laterally elongate boxes 25 with alternatives written in them. The background of the card is black and the characters and boxes are white with the writing in the boxes being black.Segments 21 of the characters 22,23,24 and one or more of the boxes 25 can be painted or inked over for example, as shown in Fig. 5, to give information about goods. While individual segments 21 of the characters 22,23,24 are inked or painted over to change the character represented, entire boxes on the right hand side are painted or inked over.
The ink or paint may be black or merely a dark colour, or alternatively, a highlighting pen or the like may be used to pick out certain segments or boxes. In the latter case it is the painted or inked over parts of the display surface which are emphasised and read.
The upper sheet 13 includes a magnetic strip 26 provided transversely across its entire width on its underside.
By means of this, the support can be mounted on a horizontal metal surface such as a metal shelf, for example, as shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 shows a second embodiment which is in the form of a sheet 40 having the outline shape of a golf club 45 with a large disc 43 over the shaft 47. The sheet 40 is uniformly thin. Two transparent covers 41,42 are provided on the disc 43 to form sleeves 48,49 in a similar manner to the covers 14,15 in the first embodiment. Thumb cut-outs 44 are provided at one end of each sleeve 48,49 as shown in Fig. 7. Cards 50,51 are provided in the sleeves 48,49. Advertising matter is printed on the areas 53,54 of the disc above and below the sleeves 48,49. The disc 43 is sized so that it can support the sheet 40 in the top of a golf bag 52 as shown in phantom in Fig. 7.
The terms "paint and "ink" as used herein are intended to cover between them all kinds of liquids which can be applied to a surface to stain or colour the surface or to harden to lie over the surface obscuring features thereon.
