Abstract

A letter box flap mechanism that does not rely on springs, magnets, or catches, to prevent it from blowing open. Rather than blow open it will blow closed. This is because the pivot point is below the centre of the surface area on the front of the flap, and rear of the flap has the largest surface area below the pivoting point. In the absence of wind, the flap will close by gravity, because the weight of material below the pivot, is greater than the weight of material above the pivot. Although the pivot point is near the centre of the opening, as soon as the flap opens, it can be lifted up to the top of the aperture, allowing unrestricted use of the total opening. On releasing, the flap drops to the pivoting points, then rotates shut, purely by gravity.
