Abstract
The warning device comprises sensing means, e.g. two spaced contacts 14 and 15 connected to a battery 12, for sensing the presence of water, and means, e.g. a buzzer 13, for emitting an audible or visible warning signal when the sensing means senses the presence of water. The sensing means and the warning signal emitting means are provided within a common housing which may have a suction pad for attaching the housing to a surface, such as the surface of a bath tub. <IMAGE>
Description
Water Level Warning Device
This invention relates to a water level warning device.
According to the present invention, there is provided a water level warning device comprising sensing means for sensing the presence of water, and means for emitting an audible or visible warning signal in response to the sensing means sensing the presence of water.
Preferably, the sensing means and warning signal emitting means are provided within a common housing.
Preferably, the device includes means for attaching the housing to a surface, such as the surface of a bath tub. The attaching means is, preferably, in the form of a suction pad.
Preferably, the sensing means comprises two spaced contacts. The spaced contacts are preferably connected electrically in series with the warning signal emitting means and a power source so that when the contacts are bridged by water, the water will conduct enough current to energise the warning signal emitting means.
Preferably, the warning signal emitting means is a sound emitting device.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of one embodiment of a water level warning device according to the invention, and
Figure 2 shows the internal components of the warning device of Figure 1.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 of the drawings, the water level warning device shown therein comprises a plastics housing 10 which is in the shape of an animal or which is of other aesthetically pleasing shape.
A suction pad 11 is fixed to the rear surface of the housing 10 so that the warning device can be attached to a surface, such as the surface of a bath tub, sink or wash basin.
The upper end of the housing 10 has an opening (not shown) for receiving a battery 12 (see Figure 2).
The opening may be closed by a removable cover.
The lower end of the housing 10 has a plurality of slit-like openings (not shown) so that, when the device is attached say to a bath tub, water can enter the housing as the water level in the bath tub rises.
Referring now to Figure 2, the battery 12 is connected electrically in series with a sound emitting device, e.g. a buzzer 13, and two parallel spaced apart copper contacts 14 and 15. The contacts 14 and 15 are located in a lower part of the housing 10 adjacent to the above mentioned slit-like openings, and are integral with copper support strips 16 and 17, respectively.
When water enters the housing 10 and bridges the two contacts 14 and 15, the water will conduct enough current to energise the buzzer 13.
The buzzer 13 is located in an upper part of the housing 10, just below the battery 12, so as to be well above the water level when the buzzer 13 starts to sound. Indeed, the housing 10 may have an internal partition to isolate the buzzer 13 and battery 12 from water entering the housing through the slit-like openings.
The warning device can be mounted in a bath tub, sink or wash basin to alert a user that the water has reached a selected level. The warning device can then be removed to break the conductive path between the contacts 14 and 15, or a switch (not shown) could be incorporated in the electrical circuit to de-energise the buzzer 13 at will.
The embodiment described herein is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, one or more light emitting devices could be provided instead of, or in addition to, the buzzer.
