Abstract

The device: a self levelling support system comprises of 3 equal legs with equal angles surrounding a spherical centre pivot, legs being flexibly connected eg by the spring plate shown. The pivot attaches to the foot of the ladder, and the three legs take up a position on the uneven surface below and lock the ball into position. <IMAGE>

Description

^1 HE SURE FOOT' A SELF LEVELLING LADDER SUPPORT This invention relates to a self levelling support system which automatically levels and locks either automatically or manually.
Its principal application being the foot of a ladder but also has applications on Car Jacks, Scaffolding and moving surfaces. I.E.: Boats.
The device comprises of three legs which are assembled at equal angles to each other. The feet of the legs stand on the ground or surface of the work site. The theory being that three legs will always have three points of contact with the ground. The top section of the legs are connected together at the underside of the legs. In the centre of the three legs above the connection point is a spherical ball joint which allows the ladders, Jack or other to be positioned into its desired working angle by rotating and pivoting on the omni. adjustable ball joint. As weight is applied to the top section of the support foot, the three legs being connected beneath the ball joint are pushed down under the weight of the load, there by trapping and gripping the ball in the pre-determined position.
Ladders are only safe and reliable when they are placed perpendicular to the wall or surface. At present it is customary in the case of an uneven base to use bricks or other unreliable objects under one foot of the ladder to bring it into perpendicularity.
The invention enables any standard ladder to be used on uneven ground, sloping terrain, severe graduants and at angles up to 900 to the assent of stairs and on spiral staircases.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Panel C shows an exploded view of all the components in the device.
Figure 1 shows the principal of accomodating various ladder foot widths both horizontally and vertically.
Panel D is an enlargement and amplification.
Figure II Panel C shows the central pivot joint and ladder base.
Figure III Panel C demonstrates the three legs that accommodate the swivel, pivot, ball joint.
Figure IV shows a spring steel retaining device or oase plate, but the legs could be directly booted to each other.
Panel E shows typical application of the invention in use over a stEp or pavement on a steep incline where a normal ladder would have to be built up by 75mm 175mm to provide safety and have both of the ladder struts at the top equally touching the wall.
Panel F shows the device in use on a spiral staircase at an angle impossible to normal ladders.
Panel G shows the variation of angle possible and the side sectionl. The device will be made to be self restricting and will not allow the operator to set the device at a greater angle than is recommended.
Panel H shows the separation of the ladder from the device.
Panel I shows the overhead view and increase of stability over a standard ladder.
The invention has widespread applications as mentioned in Panel A, Paragraph 2.
The swivel joint can be through levers, ball joints, friction devices, hydraulics or as in the principal described, through a ball oversized to the accommodating three sections in the legs, providing automatic positioning and locking.
The legs and ladder accommodation may be pressings or castings in ferrous or non-ferrous metals or plastics.
The feet of the legs may have rubber suction pads, shoes, friction pads or spikes.

Claims (1)

1/.
The self levelling support system comprises of three equal legs shaped and angled to swivel around a centre spherical pivot that fits to a platform support for a ladder. The three legs are retained by a sprung steel three sided clip. (See fig (C) IV ).
2/.
The self levelling support system permits a ladder to be used perpendicularly against any fixed surface with an uneven or sloping ground system below it.
3/.
The self levelling support by using a spherical centre pivot does not jolt or give a false position and locks positively themoment weight is placed upon it.
