Abstract

224,604. Jenkins, A. J. Oct. 19, 1923. Drawings to Specification. Determining distances acoustically.-A wireless-transmitting main station is connected by land lines with two or more sound-emitting substations. In response to an electric current from the main station, a substation emits a detonator, bell, or like signal, which acts upon a microphone associated with a land line and so causes the emission of a wireless signal from the main station. By timing the interval between the arrival of the two signals a ship can find its distance from the substation and the operation is repeated with a second substation to enable the ship to find its position. In the case of aircraft, three or more substations, not in the same straight line, will be required.
