Abstract

Public utilities and industry require manhole covers to be left open for long periods of time e.g. to vent gas and the arrangement described and shown allows a cover to be raised to sit directly above the manhole and be securely fastened in position. Four clamps may be utilised. <IMAGE>

Description

PANEL 'A' MANHOLE COVER/EXCAVATION SECURING CLAMP This invention relates to a manhole cover and excavation securing clamp.
There are many reasons why manhole covers need to be left open by public utilities and industry.
For example:- a British Telecom footway box may be left open for long periods of time in order to vent out natural gas from duct lines which has leaked from the British Gas distribution system.
These open boxes are a hazard to the public when barrier systems become vandalised or are badly maintained.
The securing clamp enables a cover to be raised and sit directly above the manhole allowing the system to vent and at the same time securly locks the cover into position.
An example of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG 1 - shows in perspective the securing clamp FIG 2 - shows the use of four clamps to secure a manhole cover FIG 3 - shows the use of four clamps to secure an open excavation PANEL 'B' The clamp also incorporates a system to bolt fence pins or barriers to the back of the clamp.
A typical clamp pattern is a 'C' section of box material (1) which the cover sits on as shown in Fig 1.
A small box material leg (2) sits inside the corner of the manhole shown in Fig 1. A length of studding (3) is used to secure the cover to the clamp shown in Fig 1. Fence pins or barriers can be bolted to the clamp using the box section (4) shown in Fig 1.

  1. PANEL 'C'
    CLAIMS 1. The manhole securing clamp enables a cover to be raised and sit directly above the manhole allowing the drain or duct system to be open to atmospere and at the same time securly locks the cover into position.
  2. 2. The clamp as claimed in Claim 1 can be used to secure open excavations when a suitable sheet material is incorporated into the system.
  3. 3. The clamp as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 provides a facility to bolt on fence pins or barriers.
  4. 4. The manhole/excavation securing clamp substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
