Description

I G3 (71 1 "IMAGE FILING SYSTEM AND METHOD" The present invention
generally relates to image filing systems and methods, and more particularly to a system and method for registering and retrieving image data.
A conventional image filing system has an optical disk device in which image data is stored together with text data serving as retrieval information. When desired image data is searched for, an operator roughly specifies image data by using the test data. Then, the operator actually show the roughly specified image data on a display device and obtains the desired image data. Thus, it is necessary to input retrieval information to a image filing system through a keyboard or the like and input the same retrieval information in order to obtain desired image data. The above-mentioned conventional image filing system is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Laid-Open Patent Publications No. 62-212849 and No. 136374.
Conventional image filing systems as described above have the following disadvantages. If the operator wishes to use, as retrieval information, some of image data registered, the operator must input the same data as some of the image data. Such an operation is not efficient. If the operator fails to register retrieval information, it is necessary to display real image data on the display device.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide an improved image filing system and method in which the above-mentioned disadvantages are eliminated.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide an image filing system and method in which some of image data which is to be registered is automatically extracted as retrieval image data, so that the operator can input image data efficiently and retrieve desired image data efficiently.

image input means for inputting image data to be registered in the image filing system; first storage means for storing the image data; display means for displaying the image data and the retrieval image data; specifying means for specifying part of the 1 1 image data displayed by the display means when the image filing system operates in a registration mode; second storage means for storing the retrieval image data which is the part of the image data specified by the specified means; and control means for reading the retrieval image data from the second storage means and for making the display means display the retrieval image data when the image filing system operates in a retrieval mode.
The above-mentioned objects of the present invention are also achieved by an image filing system comprising:
image input means for inputting image data to be registered in the image filing system; first storage means for storing the image data and retrieval image data; text data input means for inputting text data for use in retrieval, the text data including a keyword related to the image data; second storage means for storing the text data; display means for displaying the image data, the retrieval image data and the text data; specifying means for specifying part of the - 4 1 image data displayed by the display means when the image filing system operates in a registration mode, the part of the image data being the retrieval image data; and control means for reading the retrieval image data and the text data from the first storage means and the second storage means, respectively, and for making the display means display the retrieval image data and the text data when the image filing system operates in a retrieval mode.
The aforementioned objects of the present invention are also achieved by an image filing method comprising the steps of:
inputting image data to be registered in an image filing system; storing the image data in a storage device; specifying part of the image data displayed by the display device when the image filing system operates in a registration mode, storing retrieval image data which is the part of the image data in the storage device; and reading the retrieval image data from the storage device and making a display device display the retrieval image data when the image filing system operates in a retrieval mode.
- 1 The aforementioned objects of the present invention are also achieved by an image filing method comprising the steps of: inputting image data to be registered in an image filing system; storing the image data and retrieval image data in a first storage device; inputting text data for use in retrieval, the text data including a keyword related to the image data; storing the text data in a second storage device; displaying the image data, the retrieval image data and the text data on a display device; specifying part of the image data displayed by the display device when the image filing system operates in a registration mode, the part of the image data being the retrieval image data; reading the retrieval image data and the text data from the first storage device and the second storage device, respectively, and; making the display device display the retrieval image data and the text data when the image filing system operates in a retrieval mode. Other objects, features and advantages of 6 1 is the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in wh--ch:
FIG.1 is a block diagram of an image filing system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; FIG.2A is a flowchart showing the operation of the image filing system shown in FIG.1 which is obtained when the image filing system operates in a registration mode; FIG.2B is a flowchart showing the operation of the image filing system shown in FIG.1 which is obtained when the image filing system operates in a retrieval mode; FIG.3 is a diagram showing how to manage image data according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention; FIG.4 is a diagram of an ODOS data index file used in the preferred embodiment of the present invention; FIG.5 is a diagram of an application page file used in the preferred embodiment of the present invention; FIG.6 is a diagram of an application text data management file.
is Referring to FIG.1, an image filing system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention has an image input device 21, a text data input device 22, an image editing device 23, a controller 24, an image display device 25, an image storage device 26 and a text data storage device 27.
The image input device 21 is formed of, for example, a scanner, which optically reads an input image on a document and outputs an electric signal. The text data input device 22 is used for inputting text data and formed of, for example, a keyboard. The image editing device 25 has a function of specifying an arbitrary range of image data which is output by the image input device 21 or read out from the image storage device 26 and displayed on the image display device 25 under the control of the controller 24. The specified range of data is used for retrieval image data. The controller 24 controls the entire operation of the image filing system. The image display device 25 displays image data stored in a memory provided in the controller 24. The image storage device 26 stores image data stored in the memory provided in the controller 24. The text data storage device 27 stores text data stored in the memory provided in the controller 24.
1 A description will now be given of the operation of the image filing system with reference to FIGS.2A and 2B. FIG.2A shows a procedure (registration mode) for registering image data, and FIG.2B shows a procedure (retrieval mode) for retrieving image data.
As shown in FIG.2A, at step 101, the operator inputs image data on a document through the image input device 21. The input image data is stored in the memory provided in the controller 24 and then displayed on the image display device 25. At step 102 subsequent to step 101, the operator specifies, through the image editing device 23, an area of the displayed image data which the operator wishes to use as retrieval image data. If the operator wishes to register text data which serves as a keyword for use in retrieval in addition to the specified retrieval image data, at step 103, the operator inputs such a keyword through the text data input device 22. At step 104, the image data input at step 101 and the retrieval image data input at step 102 are registered in the image storage device 26, and the text data input at step 103 is registered in the text data storage device 27. The controller 24 manages the registered data in, for example, an 1 is optical disk operating system (ODOS) data index file and an application file.
When the image data registered by the procedure shown in FIG.2A is retrieved, at step 111 shown in FIG.2B, the controller 24 refers to an image data management file and controls the image display device 25 so that the retrieval image data and the text data are displayed on the image display device 25. It is possible to refer to all the retrieval image data by using a scroll key or a cusor shift key provided in the keyboard of the text data input device 22. When the operator finds out desired image data at step 112, the operator inputs an instruction through the keyboard so that the entire image data can be displayed on the image display device 25. On the other hand, when the operator does not find out desired image data or there are too many files to be searched, at step 113, the operator searches for the desired image data by using the text data.
A description will now be given of a procedure for managing image data. Referring to FIG.3 which shows how to manage image data, one document consists of three image data segments (A1 A3) 32. Some of the image data A1 is retrieval image data (a 1) 33. The image data 32 and the retrieval is image data 33 are registered in an optical disk 31.
If the image data Al input through the image input device 21 is requested to be written into the optical disk 31 by an application, a physical address is recorded in an ODOS data index file 34. The physical address shows the sector of the optical disk 31 from which the image data Al starts and the number of blocks used for recording the image data Al.
More specifically, as shown in FIG.4, the image data Al is written into five consecutive blocks between the 1000th sector and 1004th sector, and entry number of FID = 1 is provided for the written image data AI. In addition, a creation mode number is written into a corresponding area. When the written data is image data, the creation mode number is 1. When the written data is an application file, the creation mode number is 2. When the written data is retrieval image data, the creation mode number is 3.
An application page management file 35 assigns a page number to the image data 32. More specifically, as shown in FIG.5, the image data Al is assigned a document number of 1, a page number of 1 and an entry number of FID = 1. Similarly, the image - 11 1 is data A2 is assigned a document number of 1, a page number of 2 and an entry number of FID = 3, and the image data A2 is assigned a document number of 1, a page number of 3 and an entry number of FID 4.
When some of the image data A1 corresponding to the retrieval image data (a 33 is specified by using a mouse provided in the image editing device 23, the controller 24 writes the retrieval image data 33 in one block starting from 1005th sector into the ODOS data index file 34 (FIG.4), and sets the creation mode number to 3.
As shown in FIG.6, 2 is written into a retrieval image data file FID area which corresponds to the document number of 1 and which is formed in an application text data management file 36. In addition, the date of creation, the number of pages and the title of the document are written into corresponding areas of the application text data management file 36. If the user wishes to record additional information, it can be written into areas following the title of the document.
The present invention is not limited to the specifically disclosed embodiment, and variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
