Abstract

224,471. B³nger, P. May 23, 1924. Laces.-Celluloid or like tips are inserted in position ready for moulding, in tubular woven or braided laces, through slits formed in the wall of the lace. In the machine for doing this shown in Figs 1 and 2, a continuous length of lace g is held under tension, by means not shown, in heated moulds h prior to application of the tips. A slide f is reciprocated vertically to press the lace into an inverted U-bend between guiderollers d, with the outer wall of the lace at the top of the bend impaled on the ends of hollow needles c, the lace being severed by pressing it against a knife edge y by a rubber pad z on the slide. The strips p of celluloid from which the tips are made are fed intermittently forward into grooves t, Fig. 7, formed in rods r which are oscillated to carry the ends of the strips against stationary knife edges v and sever the pieces for the tags. The severed pieces are pressed by reciprocating rammers x from the grooves t through the hollow needles c into the lace ready for moulding in a known manner, the severed ends being pulled by the tensioning means from the needles c on to the moulds h, when the slide f is retracted. Instead of severing the lace when the slits are made in it, it may be severed after the tips have been introduced and when in position for moulding. Alternatively, one needle only may be used to introduce a single tip into the lace, which tip, when moulding, is severed centrally to form two lace tags, or the incision may be formed by a claw which afterwards guides a tip into the incision.
