Abstract

224,403. Brougham, F. J., (Addograph Co.). Jan. 1, 1924. Tabulating-mechanism; tabulating-key actions. -Column-selecting stops and decimal stops are mounted on the framework and the carriage, or vice versa, and are set from a stationary keyboard; the decimal stops may co-operate also with progressive column-stops, and the stops may be arranged to permit of either direct or reverse tabulation; the. carriage may be propelled by a spring drum and returned by hand, or may be propelled in either direction by power. The machine shown in Fig. 6 is provided with the mechanism described in Specifications 210,894, 211,954, and 211,966 for imparting continuous or step feed to the carriage, comprising a shaft 10 geared to the carriage and adapted (1) to be moved step-by-step for letter-spacing by means of a ratchet-device 36, controlled by the typing-keys, or (2) to be rotated continuously in either direction by means of gearing 11. 12 which is coupled to a motor-driven shaft on depressing a carriageadvancing key-lever 21, or a carriage-returning key-lever 23. The carriage 4, Fig. 12, is now provided at the middle with a three-armed lever 60, 61, 62 which supports a pivoted dog 58 having teeth 58, 58 for engaging a stationary rack 57 formed with teeth at letter-space intervals. The three-armed lever is held in mid-position by springs 66, 67 engaging the arms 61, 62. A slide 70, mounted in lugs 74 on the carriage, is formed with fingers 71, 72 co-operating with a pin 73 on the dog 58, the slide being retained in mid-position by springs 75. A helical stop-member 77, having denomination stops 77 at letter-space intervals, is formed with arms 80 mounted to slide on and rock with a square shaft 81 carried by brackets 82 on the framework 1. The stopmember is coupled to the slide 70 by engagement of one of the arms 80 with lugs on the slide. An arm 83 on the rock-shaft is coupled by a link 83 to a bail 86 having an inclined bar 87a cooperating with key-levers 88 provided with denomination keys which are adapted to bring the denomination stops into position for co-operating with column-selecting stops 79 or progressive column-stops 78 on the framework. The righthand stop 77a, corresponding to the decimal point, is normally in co-operative position, and is not associated with a key. The columnselecting stops are arranged at intervals of ten letter-spaces in guides 113, 114, 115, and are connected to key-levers 116 provided with columnselecting keys; the stops have inclines engaging the guide 113, and on depressing the columnselecting keys, the stops are raised and moved laterally, and stop-lugs 79 thereon are moved into position for co-operating with the decimal stops. The progressive column-stops 78 are adjustable on a rod 97 carried by the brackets 82, and consist of a yoke apertured to engage the rod and formed on one arm with a stop-lug 78, and a tooth 99 for engaging teeth on a scale-plate 102 secured to the rod, engagement being maintained by a spring 100. The idle stops are moved to the ends of the rod 97. The stops are rocked to bring the stop-lugs into position for co-operating with the decimal stops by depressing a tabulating-key on a key-lever 111 connected to a sector 108 gearing with a sector 104 which is secured to the rod 97 and scale-plate. 102. For column-selection or progressive column-printing, one of the column-selecting keys or the tabulating-key is depressed, and the key-lever 21 or 23 is then depressed, depending on whether direct or reverse tabulating is to be effected. If the carriage is to be arrested in any other position than the decimal-point position, one of the denomination keys, as well as a column-selecting key or the tabulating-key, is depressed. On engagement of the selected denomination stop and column stop, the slide 70 is arrested, and the carriage makes a short further movement and rocks the dog 58, whereupon the tooth 58a or 58 engages the rack 57 and arrests the carriage. The carriage is arrested in the same position whether the tabulation is direct or reverse, the movement of the carriage after arrest of the slide 70, compensating for the thickness of the stops. The springs 75 cushion the impact of the stops, and the springs 66, 67 cushion the impact of the teeth on the rack. Keyboards.-The column-selecting and denomination keys, referred to above, are provided with the markings, preferably in black, 10, 20 - - , and units, tens, - - , indicating the scale position and denomination position of the associated stops respectively. The keys mav have also a second marking, preferably in red, the markings on the column-selecting keys running 0, 10 - - , and on the denomination keys 9, 8 - - . These markings are employed in running the carriage to a particular scale position; for instance, to run to the scale position 12, the column-selecting and denomination keys bearing the red markings 10 and 2 are employed.
